Today in Engineering class, I was playing BreakOut(yeah, as in old-school video game) on my friend's TI-83+ calculator. I flashbacked to like fourth grade, playing Tetris on a different friend's gameboy in like ~4th grade, on the way to Chuck E Cheese for his birthday. His dad drove a white Jeep Wrangler, and we were listening to a tape of Mr Luce's. One of the songs has stuck with me since then.. (to the tune of You're a Grand Old Flag?????) "My name is Danny Quayle I didn't go to Yale Got C's & D's at Indiana U...." And I thought(still playing BreakOut, albeit poorly) "I wish I could remember the name of the group who did that song..." then like 30 seconds later it hit me: the Capitol Steps. Have any of you even HEARD of these guys? I'm browsing on cdnow.com trying to find which album it was, but I have no clue. And I shaved my head yesterday morning. Jian had a problem with hair in gum, again.. went on about the options.. "just keep chewing, and hope my SHARP teeth will cut the hair" Murray referred to a few strands of hair being considered a blade. A blade of hair. Jian suggested that another option would be to just spit the gum out, but that would affect his performance.. a big wad of gum dangling from the side of his head, finally he compaired the whole thing to "like- having potatoe chips, in your gum" very silly... Duting the intro to sad girl.. Jian went into the "young, 14 year old, heroin chic" discription, and a 14 year old ( i assume) in the crowd screamed really loud. Jian was caught off guard, and was like : ' well, we weren't necessarily talking ABOUT you... um, what do I say to that?" I think she was probably more excited about the 14 yr old reference than the heroin chic, emaciated model reference... (very vague-sorry don't remember exact words :() Mike went into an explaination of "blanc monge' (sp?) which was maybe what the ingredients in the song created..?? and if you didn't measure the ingredients carefully it would grow and grow and we should fear it. We, the audience, patiently listened, which Mike responded with something like whatsa matter with you people.. you should be afraid.. run... Dave had an interesting intro to my poor generation, I had never heard before, I can't do it justice, so I won't really try.. but about a little girl who had a lot of toys.. but was missing some of the less material things, like family.. - -lynne ------------------------------ Date: 22 Oct 1999 21:16:38 GMT From: srm9988n@aol.comicrelief (Lori at fruhead dot com) Subject: Re: Fight the powah. ellen said: >Someone else already raised a question that Lawrence hasn't (that I've >seen) answered, so I'd like to redirect it, to Lawrence and anyone else >who feels the same way he does. What are you doing about it? What are >you *going* to do about it? Actually, the question already has been answered by the simple fact that this conversation is taking place. Never underestimate the power of the written word. It's spurred revolutions, hasn't it? It is a fallacy that talking about it is a waste of time, or that it's not *enough* of a contribution for a given individual. It sounds like a wonderful, motivating challenge -- don't just talk, do it! Fix it! You! All by yourself! But that isn't how this political system works, now is it? Lawrence isn't the King of Spain, once or future -- and even if he were, Spain has a representative government, and guess what those reps do? TALK among themselves and their constituents, before they go off half-cocked, without considering alternative points of view, to change something. :) >So-- you believe this is wrong; what are you doing to change it? Surely >if it's this important to you, you're doing something to fight it beyond >opening a discussion on Usenet. Right? Umm, where did *anyone* involved in the discussion say it was so important to them that the level of discussing it on Usenet wasn't enough for them? I didn't see anyone make that statement -- although Lawrence did mention taking his concerns to the band, and I believe he also said something about contacting elected representatives. People pick their battles, and how to fight them, based on their own individual conscience, not on challenges from others (who may be issuing the challenge just because they're growing tired of the chatter, in which case no one's making them read the thread. ;) ) Or at least that's how I think it *should* be. Furthermore, since the discussion only started maybe 3 days ago, I don't see anything wrong with kicking it around among ourselves a little, exploring the issue *before* going off and staging protests and bombarding Congressmen with mail and boycotting clubs and putting a fake id in every underager's Christmas stocking. It's not like we've been moaning about it for weeks. Might seem that way, but it's not true. ;) As for what *I'm* going to do about it? I pay attention to the voting records and activities of my congresscritters and local reps, write to them when provoked, and make them quite aware of my obsessive voting habits. I converse with club owners and bouncers (or talk back to them, as the case may be at certain UnSpeakables in Philly.) And I participate in discussions on Usenet -- hardly an idle exercise, since no one really has a clue what effect our words might have on whose thoughts or actions anywhere in the connected world. If you're looking for me to lead a parade or organize a hunger strike, you've got the wrong chickadee -- at least on this issue. But using smaller, more personal and less publicly confrontational ways that feel more effective to me doesn't mean that I'm not acting. Imho "all talk, no action" is utterly an oxymoron. - -- Lori ******************** Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes. ~~ Maggie Kuhn ------------------------------ Date: 22 Oct 1999 21:58:06 GMT From: shadoeme@aol.comrad (Genna) Subject: Re: Genna is *Happy* today Just to ease your minds, I thought I should tell you. One of them graduated from the high school about a mile from my parents' house, so they always do shows there as fundraisers (and they played at my high school, too, a couple of times, but the school eventually couldn't afford it) and we would always go. Now that I'm away from the Washington area, I don't get to see them as much (at all) but the new material is still great. Especially "Lirty Dies." (since they have no shortage of things in Washington to make fun of :) They have a website at http://www.capsteps.com with sound files (in practically every format imaginable) of some of their stuff, and their tour dates.
