(that means, I am so sad.) here is my tragic story of the day. For the past few days I have been listening to Thronhill on the way to school in my disk man. This morning I woke up with a craving for Dar Williams. I was kind of in a rush, so i just grabbed her CD and stuck it in my book bag. When I boarded the bus, I took out Thornhill and put it in Dar's case, and put Dar's CD in my discman...no biggie. But, when I got to school, I wanted to show a friend lyrics from Dar's liner, so I reached into my bag....and... the case was **GONE**. that means I LOST THORNHILL!!!...now my Thornhill CD case (which is safe on my dresser) is taunting me. I am craving Splatter^2...and I'm sure it will only get more severe. *hopefully* I'll find it safe on my bus tomorrow morning (though i have severe doubts). ::sniffle:: I'm a Sad Girl. solem, Genna ^^^^^^^^^ We love trees we love the snow the friends we have the world we share, and you find magic from your god and we find magic everywhere. ~Dar Williams, "The Christians and the Pagans" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 17:36:17 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: [FAQ Discussion] Age-restricted venues Greetings, boy did the age-restriction issue sure pop up while I was away at training! It seems we are having both sides of this argument come up as usual and I want feedback from people regarding how well the FAQ handles it. I felt that the texts directly pertaining to age-restriction (Section 3, question 9 [1] and Appendix A[2]) do a very good job of stating the problem, providing information about the problem, and offering some solutions to the problem. This is my opinion of course. I'd like to hear what you think. It seems one person (Lawrence) doesn't agree with the statements in the FAQ about it. To you, Lawrence, and others, I'd love to see a discussion of exactly what text in the FAQ (in the context of the entire entries and not just a given line) you are taking umbrage with and how you propose to fix them to be stated better. Arrgh. It really, really, REALLY hurts to be lumped into the group "anyone under 18," as if my personal maturity level doesn't matter at all, just my birthday. I completely understand your point about the necesity of a cutoff line, but I have to say that it's exTREMEly frustrating to be almost 18, to feel like a mature and responsible member of society, and to hear "Oh, you won't be 18 until April? Too bad. Life isn't fair. Deal." > It may seem to be unfair, but much of life can be unfair. That doesn't mean > it has to be unpleasant. There is so much to look forward to in life. Just > because you can't see Moxy Fruvous this year, doesn't mean that you never > will. Enjoy what you can while you can. Yes, life is unfair. I'm 17 and a half. That's my problem. I should just deal and look forward to the all ages Fruvous shows that lie in my future. But this dismissive attitude from everyone over 18 or over 21 is hard for those of us under 18 to deal with without getting snippy and defensive. We describe cutoff lines as arbitrary and unfair because, to someone like me, that's what they feel like. Imagine not being allowed into a show because your shoe size is too small. Or because your eyes are the wrong color. That's what it feels like. I admit there's not a better way to determine who's responsible enough to be let into a show and who isn't, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be allowed to complain. I understand that there are privilages that come with age, but there's no need to rub it in. [1] I have to add, though, that there are *legal* ways of getting around the 21+ rule. Talk to the venue, maybe something can be arranged. Hey, my dad is going with me to the NYE show, since it's 21+. Granted, I have the coolest dad i've ever met, but still. smoochies, meghan [1] This is a general statement, not directed at anyone specific. - -------- "Life . . . is like a box of chocolates. Is the drinking age really what > is stopping you from getting plastered and then going out for a > drive? Well, I personally hate beer (as do many I know), and most kids that I'm personally acquainted with are responsible enough not to drink and drive. But to answer your question, all us underagers out there, after entering middle school, can get our hands on alcohol and tobacco quite easily. The most recent example that I can give is that a few months ago, after the final performance of a show called "One Acts" at my old high school, there was a cast party. And, guess what? Rumor had it that one of the student directors (who was a junior and around 17, I think) had a whole CASE LOAD of vodka, of all alcoholic beverages. It was a rumor that was confirmed after the party, too. The parents either just weren't aware, or just didn't care. And there have been plenty of more recent episodes that I can't name because I haven't been there. But, although I lived in a pretty liberal, suburban neighborhood, that wasn't an isolated case. There have been plenty of stories about kids getting into trouble (not with the law, but just doing things they shouldn't have done) while drunk. I also know plenty of people who can walk into a local convenience store, and get a pack of cigarettes, most times no questions asked. > When are we as a nation going to understand that the adage "Do as I say, > not as I do" will never, ever work for keeping kids out of trouble? Agreed. Obviously, if you tell a teen or child not to do something and don't explain why, out of curiosity or rebellion, that's exactly what they'll do. I know I've heard some saying just grit your teeth and wait it out about this subject, but I will agree with others who said that if you just wait it out and don't complain/point out why this is unfair, nothing will get changed. I personally don't mind this whole 18/21+ issue, but I can perfectly understand those who do. Most true Fruvous fans (the ones that are actually going to go through the trouble of arguing with the venue about getting in) are more responsible than most concert-goers in general (yes, even the people under 18). It certainly does seem arbitrary to let some underagers in one night, and then absolutely refuse those who come with responsible parents the next... and it may not all be the specific venue's fault, either. It's the law that has to get changed. What's wrong with going to a concert that has been labeled 18+ when you go with parents that understand that you'll be in an environment that isn't necessarily the most wholesome in the world? Shouldn't it be a responsible parent's choice, and not the law's, as to what their children can see? Sure, R rated movies restrict underagers, but you can still go see them with a parent. I also agree with the people who said that if we want to knock some sense into our very idiotic congressmen, someone's going to have to tell him/her what's going on; exactly the opposite of what some around here seem to have been saying (forgive me if I'm wrong). And just because life was that way when some of us were underage, it doesn't mean it has to be for the rest of us. If that were the case, civilization would have made no progress, and there would still be ludicrous laws regarding prohibition and women's suffrage, etc. Sorry, I know I'm repeating some (or a lot) of stuff, but I just had to add to the fray with my $.05... As someone who "came of age" when it was 18, and who has children for whom the drinking age is 21, I can argue both sides. But I think it might be a bit safer for young people to experiment with alcohol (they will anyway) while they are still in their parents' care rather than when they go off to college. And they'd get it out of their systems before they entered a more independent situation. By that I mean, they might drink, but knowing they had to get back into the house without mom and dad knowing they were drunk, they'd be less likely to drink enough to end up in the hospital.
