I thought the show was great, and come on, can you honestly tell me that you don't like King of Spain and Green Eggs and Ham? I loved the Vancouver show, I liked the show better in '98 , but I think the only reason for that is that it was my first Fru show, and well, first times are always memorable, right? ;) I also thought that this show was smaller than last year's show, but I was soon corrected. I also didn't really find out about the website/newsgroup/irc # until after this show, so this is my virgin posting on the newsgroup as well :) Be gentle. That was my initial reaction, all in all a good show, lots of fun, everyone enjoying themself. Then I had the fortune of going to Seattle last night. Wow. That's all I can say. I'll post a review when I get a chance, after I get a few hours sleep :) So , I guess now, my feelings are this. The shows in Vancouver were alot of fun. I really enjoyed myself. I love the atmosphere there, not too cramped, sound is pretty good, but after taking in a show in the states now, yeah, the crowd does yell out more. Then, silly me, I said wouldn't it be great that we go to NYC to see the show? Hahaha. Isn't that a funny thought? Well, my residents took me up on the idea. They had never seen them and have only just recently started to appreciate the Moxy love and talent because of wonderful me. The only obstacle to this idea was...midterms! I had a take home midterm due by 9:30 Tuesday morning, and it was about 6:30pm on Monday. I had a night class to go to, so I left my residents up to planning the trip and getting myself out of some requirements of my job...ie, meetings. I came back and everything was planned. They talked to my supervisor and got me out of the boring meetings. Next problem, my midterm, which consisted of two five page papers on topics that I had no clue about. We, and I do mean myself plus 4-5 other people, finished one paper around 3am and we were off! But, there were problems with the tire...it needed air and we couldn't give it any. Oh well, on the interstate by 4am. Yay! I was tired by 5am took a nap for an hour while my faithful semi roommate drove. We finally arrived in NYC, after traffic, having to make a U-turn in the Lincoln Tunnel, and getting directions from a federal agent (pretty cute, by the way). We ran to the NBC studios to discover to our dismay that there were no tickets. But, that didn't stop us! We hung around New York, shopped on 5th Avenue, got a bit crabby, and met Princess Barbie until 4pm. Then, we were back in the NBC building annoying the ticket guy with the clipboard for a way into the show. He didn't believe our sob story--it was true, I swear! We waited and waited and waited with fluctuating hopes of getting in. At the last minute, they devastated us with the sad news that there were no more seats. We were defeated. Our hearts were broken. I screamed and cried. Ok, so I didn't do that. But I felt like needing to do it. So, we left. While we were outside, I kept a watchful eye out for a sighting of one of the guys. My heart stopped. I grabbed my friend's arm. There, in front of me, was a tall, dark and handsome man. He had on tight pants with shoulder length brown curly hair. It was Jian! But, sadly, no, it wasn't. Oh, how I wished it was him. Back into the car we went and left for home, which was 7 hours away, I might add. After a stop at a friend's house to pick up his winter clothes, and meeting his hot brother, we arrived back home in time for the show. You should have seen us trying to run back to the building. By this time we had been awake for 39 hours and man were we delirious. We ran upstairs and couldn't find anyone. They were all downstairs. So, down the stairs we went. I was a little confused because there was a band already playing, and it definitely wasn't Moxy. Happily, it was a band on Leno. We watied and waited. Conan came on! Yay! More waiting...Missed the fruhead jokes and Jian and Murray singing whatever it is they were singing. Then they appeared! Splatter, Splatter was an interesting choice of song for their first American appearance on tv. I thought they would have played I Will Hold On. But, hey. That's me and they're the band. It was a little fast paced. Jian looked nervouse, Murray was chill, Mike was having fun, a and Dave was just as gorgeous as ever. 39 hours of no sleep, 14 hours of driving, 6 states, and hours of walking was worth seeing Moxy Fruvous for five minutes on tv. Will I do it again? Hell ya. Will my residents go along? Hell ya. Next trip: 9:30 Club on Nov. 20. We will be there sleep or no sleep, and we will meet them. Oh, yes, we will. It is my vow to all. ------------------------------ Date: 20 Oct 1999 01:39:16 GMT From: hallofeyes@aol.com (Jordan QUSAK) Subject: Re: Fake ID needed : ) >>Heard the December 1 show @ the Bowery Ballroom was 18 and over. So because of my >5'1" height I probably wouldn't get in anyhow...just an idea : ) Um, hi. Just wanted to comment on using fake IDs to get into shows. It's not a good idea. In fact, it's a really bad idea. Fruvous often plays venues with age restrictions. For an explanation of why this is, and why venues have restrictions at all, go to http://www.fruvous.com/news/FAQ. The long and short of it is, if you get caught with an ID, you can risk not only yucky fines, but a delay on your driver's license. You can also cause a lot of trouble for the club. This is, however, all assuming that you get carded at all. I've never been to the Bowery, but nearly every time I've gone to an 18+ show (Früvous or otherwise - last was Guster at Ziggy's in NC), they've only asked for ID if you claim to be over 21 and plan to drink. In fact, when I went to see the New Year's show at the Bottom Line (which was 21+), I didn't get carded. This is all just my opinion, and I've said it before, but rules and laws like that exist for a reason - to keep the club open. The Bowery is a fantastic venue, and has been very supportive of Früvous and a lot of other fantastic bands (I'll take this opportunity to put in another plug for Guster, Früvous opener of long ago and rising stars :). It would be my wish that people don't jeopardize their ability to remain in business by breaking the law. At least call the venue and find out if there's anything that can be done - if they'll let you in accompanied by an adult or some such thing. Also, most NY bouncers didn't exactly fall off the turnip truck yesterday - I know someone said that they'd gotten into the Bowery with a fake before, but I'd be willing to bet that whoever's running the door at the Bowery has seen 'em all and doesn't fool around. Whew. Sorry that was so long-winded, but I feel strongly about this. How many amazing Rams Head shows have I missed because of my convictions? Well, I guess that'll make my first one (whenever after November 30, 2000 that happens to be) that much more special [1]. ~~Kate [1] Are my Catholic school "True Love Waits"-indoctrinated roots showing :) ?
