I went to hear The Maggies at the Iron Horse on Friday night, and I was first in line outside, so I got to see people coming and going and they got to see me. Stuart (Stewart?) saw the MF swirl-logo pin I had on my shirt, and whispered to me "Does that mean ?" I laughed and said, "No, it means Moxy Fruvous." We both laughed and he went on his way. (My first >REAL earthquake experience). >Anyone else have a story? It happened exactly ten years ago today, on an absolutely gorgeous day. (*Too* perfect, we'd later say. Hindsight 20/20.) I was just starting my history homework when I felt a little shake. I thought it was a leetle teensy quake, the kind that aren't uncommon in the Bay Area. But it started again, and this time it didn't stop. (For any of you who wonder what quakes are like, they feel exactly like airplane turbulence.) Common wisdom at the time held that doorways were the safest spots to be (nowadays they say that doorways aren't particularly safe and that you should get under a desk), so I bolted for my doorway. They told us later that it was only 30 seconds long, but naturally it seemed far longer; a short eternity of looking down the hall at the books raining down and back in my room at my alarmingly rattling window, and then the sirens started. Fortunately my house and everyone in it was spared (although my pet fish died when his ceramic fish-house fell on him, and my mother lost about half of her good china). One of my friends was home alone in the Santa Cruz mountains, maybe a mile from the epicenter, and watched in horror was one-third of her house detatched itself from the other two-thirds and started sliding down the hill. Later that week we went to downtown Los Gatos (if memory serves, we needed to go to City Hall to request a building inspection [1]) and were stunned at the devastation. There was almost nothing left but piles of bricks and teetery husks of buildings. That was longer than I intended. Sorry. - --nicole twn p.s. Everything turned out OK in the end. Los Gatos and Santa Cruz, arguably the towns hardest hit, rebuilt themselves and now look spiffy. [1] Everyone had to get these. Your building/house would either be red-tagged (condemned, nobody allowed in), orange-tagged (extensive repair needed), or green-tagged (all systems go). *** "Some people think I'm neurotic and all, but I'm not; I just like to think about things over and over and over again..."--Eddie From Ohio Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn Reply-to address is INCORRECT!
