You can check out www.xpn.org to see the details - but I encourage everyone who can afford it to pledge money to the station. Success for WXPN is success for the format that they promote, so even if you aren't in the listening area, you can support what WXPN has done to build a strong base for Fruvous in the area - and helping to promote them elsewhere (through things like the World Cafe). But definitely if you have listened to the station and liked it - "pay your radio bill" as Michaela Majoun likes to say. Plus I'll be working the phones on Saturday morning as a volunteer! Since I will be in Europe later this week [poor me ;-)] and not here to tape it - I had asked Michaela Majoun yesterday at the Cooper River music fest (which was great, BTW) about the airing of The Point show, and she thought it would not be on Friday locally because they will be fundraising (she thought it would be aired at a later date in Philly). But Helen Leicht announced this morning that it will be on Friday; so I called the station, and Helen reconfirmed that yes, it is going to be on in the 3:00 hour of the Cafe on Friday. So get your tape recorders warmed up! Sorry about that, but I hope these >directions are clear enough. (Hugo? MC? hKath? Care to offer any >better interpretations?) I'll just add the following: "Hugo's idiot-proof directions to Zaphod 2" *IF* you're coming from the west, you'll want to exit the Queensway at KENT ST. It's the exit AFTER BRONSON, and BEFORE METCALFE. Immediately after you exit the highway, the offramp turns left and goes North up Kent St. Kent is a one-way street, so stick to the right-hand lane to make your life easier. When you see GILMOUR (see Lori's previous directions for the # of blocks, etc), turn right. Start looking for parking right away if you can. Bank is one block past Kent, so if you want to park close to the club.... Parking is free on the street after 6:30 p.m., but locations are limited. *IF* you're coming from the east (for all you MA/CT/VT ppl), you're exit is METCALFE/CATHERINE. That's AFTER NICHOLAS/MANN ST. and BEFORE BRONSON. The offramp here is a bit weird. You want to stay on Catherine Street, so go straight (stick to the left lanes of the offramp and you'll do fine). Once you pass the traffic lights, you'll want to get to the right-hand lane as quickly as possible (not a lot of space to do this). There are two lights after you exit the Queensway. The first is O'Connor. The second is Bank St. Turn right on Bank, and go x # of blocks until you hit Gilmour. Previous advice as to parking applies. There... directions from a local. If I may dive back in for a sec ... the several incidents to which my original post referred indicated that perhaps even among the "choir", if that's what we're to consider amm-f, there's some room for review. That's why I very reluctantly posted it. > "I Know Something You Don't Know" is only > really fun if you get to tell what it is you know. Sometimes humans are > selfish enough that they don't see the farther-reaching consequences of > gossip. It's not even necessarily a game. In the cases to which I referred, it's more a matter of what seem like not-widely-known details about a subject of mutual interest. It certainly was a wake-up call to me to realize that even a few things that I initially, individually viewed as interesting footnotes, when accumulated and/or coupled with direct quotes, suddenly took on the flavor not just of "background", but gross privacy invasion. Trying to remember if *I* had mentioned to anyone anything that now, with my sensitised perspective, seemed beyond the pale was a little sobriety checkpoint I did not enjoy. The point is, as Jacey7 said, not just why we talk about Früvous, by why we talk about *any* other people, *at all*. The answer is, we find their individual traits, quirks, and actions more fascinating than practically anything else. We are social creatures; historically our survival has depended on communicating pertinent facts about others to those in our community. And as ellen said, we *can't* visualize the consequences of just mentioning to another person something we find particularly interesting, troubling, or relevant. The problem as I see it is when a pattern of "informative" details about *anyone* start making their way to the farther reaches of a closed community, instead of remaining the confidence of those to whom they actually pertain. People for whom the relevance of the information supersedes their interest level probably need to know it. When the interest level of the recipient supersedes the information's relevance to him/her, however -- that's where my own, idiosyncratic privacy-protection alarms start sounding. YMMV. I am *really* sorry I can't address this more specifically, but that in itself would be indiscreet. :( [Which just posting on this topic *at all* was/is, I am well aware (and not at all happy with.)] That's the unfortunate paradox: addressing the spread of gossip/too much info/invasion of privacy spreads less specific, but still interesting, buzz among more people than previously were aware of it. I do however think most amm-fers do have the band's best interests at heart, and don't *intentionally* participate in personal-sphere violation. So I guess I'm being optimistic here in hoping that addressing the breaches of privacy I'm aware of, within this "choir"like forum, is part of the solution, and that I'm *not* just perpetuating the problem. >What was my point? Oh yeah, just trying to be that ray of sunshine >again. ;) oh yeah. We need one around here, to counter me when I decide to tackle something like this instead of The Great Mason-Dixon Line Debate. ;) Sorry so heavy, all. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: 27 Sep 1999 20:44:21 GMT From: serra44@aol.com (Jill Friedman) Subject: Re: Birthday Wishes HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE!!! :) (I'm just assuming he'll find out that all of AMM-F was yelling this...) - -J writing a song called the Ballad of Jill V.
