My interpretation was always more basic (and I won't go line by line, because it is so general): It is a story of Boy Meets Girl, yes, but what is striking is that they are such different people with different outlooks. This may seem to bode ill for the couple, but in actuality it is this fact that makes them perfect complements to each other. Boy is continually amazed and inspired by Girl; she reveals a whole new world for him that is beyond what he had become accustomed to. That "schoolhouse on fire" line is symbolic of the fact that Girl is in fact "burning down" his old preconceptions of the world. In falling in love with her, he becomes more open-minded and sees the world in new light. Josh Drury Winnipeg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 12:21:40 -0500 From: Josh Drury Subject: Winnipeg Free Press Article, Sept. 22/99 Moxy Fuvous's new CD tribute to musical roots By Bartley Kives Music Reporter With its long rows of strip malls, fast food outlets and winding residential streets, Thornhill, Ont. looks like any other middle-class suburb in Canada. But the Toronto 'burb is also the birthplace of recording artists The Philosopher Kings, Hayden, By Divine Right and Moxy Fruvous -- The Latter of which just released and album of the very same name. As singer Jian Ghomeshi explains, Thornhill the Cd is less of a tribute to the place than it is a celebration of the quartet's musical roots. "It's a paean to being 15 years old, going to basement parties and coming of age musically," says Ghomeshi, who met with his Fruvous bandmates in the theatre program at their Thornhill high school. As kids in the mid-'80s, they all discovered The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who and The Grateful Dead at the same time -- along with the libations that went a long with them. "It was a bit of stoner culture," Ghomeshi says. Thornhill the CD, the group's first for pioneering indie label True North, is a clear and obvious tribute to the Beatles. If that seems arrogant -- the Beatles, after all, were "bigger than God" -- Moxy Fruvous couldn't care less. Just like the Barenaked Ladies, albeit on a much smaller scale, Moxy Fruvous has revived its career in the United States. Meanwhile, in Winnipeg -- the home of the group's most loyal Canadian fans -- Moxy fruvous performs in venues such as the 300-seat West End Cultural Centre. Moxy will return to the WECC for one show tomorrow night. Moxy Fruvous was that flavour in 1994, the year Bargainville was released in Canada. Now, Ghomeshiclaims that life is better outside the spotlight -- an oft-repeated cliche that is nonetheless believable in this case. "We're an underground phenomenon in the U.S." he says, citing the band's Web presence (eight sites and counting) as proof. "That feels better, because you don't have to worry (that) the teenage girls at your show are only there because they saw the video." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 11:47:40 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: Washington Moxy Fruvous wrote: > It appears from the discussion that I omitted the Washington info on the > itinerary! > > The show is Saturday, November 20th at the 930 Club. It's a daily MTV show where people send in email and phone votes for the most popular video and the top 10 get their video "played" during TRL. Of course played doesn't mean shown from start to end, but rather just a part of it. In between these snippages of everyone's favorite songs ("You can take that cookie and stick it up your..."), Host Carson Daly looks out the live MTV picture window at people as they scream for him. What I hear is not neccessarily her disagreeing or fighting what he's saying. I just hear him musing over the end of their relationship, and sharing his feelings with her (I actually don't hear her at all). It doesn't seem like he's trying to justify his feelings-- just putting them out on the table. > "She set my schoolhouse on fire > > Or, to take a more poetic meaning… "set my schoolhouse on fire"- her > parting shots as leaves strike him to the core, wounding the vulnerable > part of him that really did love her. I think we can assume that the second meaning is more likely. ;) On a less analytical level, though, isn't "set my schoolhouse on fire" sort of an established expression? Or did I just make that up in my head? It seems like when I first heard FiL, I recognized that expression from somwhere, and it means-- to use the expression I would have used in college-- "she rocked my world." Really interesting reading of the song, angie. I hadn't thought of it that way before, but your interpretation rings pretty true. The only thing that bugs me about that is, recall that they sang this song to Tom- n-Rachel after Tom proposed. Kind of sad to think that that was their tribute if your interpretation of the song is correct (or, at least, the same as the authors's. ;). Which leads me to the question: is there any Fruvous love song that *doesn't* have a dark side? Sorry, IOYK doesn't count because even it has the underlying theme of "it sucks being apart." ;) peace, ellen *************************************** We are islands to each other Building hopeful bridges On a troubled sea.
