Much as I like the Birchmere and the sets we tend to get at places like the BM and the Ramshead, I'm surprised to hear you say this. I had my doubts about a show at the 9:30 when they first scheduled the one in February-- you're correct to imply that it's not a venue that would normally host a band like Fruvous. But I thought they put on a pretty good show there, and made quite a few new fans among the 9:30 regulars who happened to be there that night. This is in direct contrast to Jess Klein, who opened that night, and was, IMO, completely drowned in that room. Her sound just wasn't big enough. I'd still love to see Fruvous play at the Barns. I don't know what else I can do to make it happen at this point, except hire the band myself and raise the money myself. I know! A bake sale! Even better would be a big multi-band show; say, Fruvous, EFO, the Nields, DaVinci's Notebook, whoever. That would be a good lineup for the Filene Center (that's the outdoor ampitheater at Wolf Trap). We should start lobbying now for next summer. ;) peace, ellen (oh and btw: *sob* no DC area show? *please* say it just hasn't been confirmed yet! if you can't find a venue, you can play in my house! really!) ************************************************ Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Sep 1999 23:25:41 +0000 From: "ellen p. buckley" Subject: Re: DC area venues Lawrence P Solomon wrote: > and the 9:30 club sucks for Fruvous. it mostly sucks in general, but > specifically it's a terrible venue for them. it's a rock venue. they > are not a rock band. There have been quite few shows [that I've been to] where I have seen a taper truly not care whether those present at the show enjoyed it or not. Come to think of it, there's only been one such show that I've witnessed. I was there with a person who was taping; he does not have a mic stand but instead has two tiny mics which he clips to the frame of the glasses he wears for the show. He is of medium height (for a man - he's certainly taller than I am!), and he was standing about two-thirds of the venue length away from the stage. There were a few (four? six?) women at the show, standing right behind us, obviously having fun and (I speculate) rather intoxicated. They were giggling, talking *loudly* during songs and even shoving people all around them when one of them got onto another's shoulders. My companion, who ordinarily plants himself in one spot and does not move so as to not disturb the recording quality, kept glancing at me. I asked the girls (who looked like they were college freshmen but behaved like spoiled eight-year-olds) repeatedly, and quite politely, to please not be as loud and maybe not shove me in the back, if at all possible. They seemed to be cooperative for all of thirty seconds each of the three or four times I asked them this, whereupon they would resume "having fun," which they claimed they were entitled to do. How can you argue with that logic? Being tired of their crap as well as just plain sleepy, I retreated to a nearby bench and closed my eyes for a couple of minutes. When I opened them again, I saw my companion, who had turned 180 degrees, yelling at the girls at the top of his lungs. He had never done that before, as far as I was aware. To anyone, taping-related or not. Mind you, I said this was the only time I had seen a taper lose his cool. I didn't say this was the only time I'd seen a taper get treated like dirt. By far not the only time. I think that, for all the wonderful things tapers do for us (and for the band, who I still believe appreciate it), they sure do get treated like garbage. Backlash, sometimes, is inevitable; I'm surprised they've held out this long. Are they angels? Probably not. But, as everyone else, they deserve people's respect. Including the respect of new fans who don't know what to expect at a live show, which I personally think is a poor excuse for running to a rude bouncer before you come talk to the people you're having a problem with. - -v, why did I just tell that entire story? I guess I had a point there somewhere. There certainly is a moral to it, eh. - ----- Vika Zafrin ----- vika@fruhead.com ----- http://www.fruhead.com/users/vika/index.html "Please, rename the moons of Jupiter to John, Paul, George and Ringo.
