The "desperate" sign implies that none of the renters are going to rewind, but most patrons have no problem doing so. Christine "I don't have all the answers. But the clerks don't mind if the patrons forget, except for the one stickler, who has quit, so no one cares about him/her anymore. Got it? ShadoeMe wrote: > the partrons would attach post-its that said "please rewind". allerting the > video store owners that said patron had not rewound the tape. (or something to > that effect). that doesn't really work, though - the line in the song is almost certainly a reference to the signs in video stores. plus, the customers who don't rewind are likely to not be considerate enough to let the clerks know they didn't rewind. if I were going to take the time to put a note on my video saying "I didn't rewind this, could you do it for me?" well, I might as well rewind it myself. I haven't been following this thread as well as I should have for jumping into it now, but I do have this to add (or repeat :) It's possible that the "stickler" line and the "rewind" line are completely unrelated: (So contrary to the desparate sign, most patrons always "Please Rewind," and the clerks don't mind.) (They're very kind; the only stickler has resigned.) The one who resigned was just a general stickler for everything. He probably also wouldn't let people "pay one price for two." :) or he's going for irony by saying that they *are* rewinding contrary to the sign that says they should. It reminds me of something a friend of mine said to someone about some activity (I forget what, so the quote will be... um, missing parts) "Are you doing such-and-such? I have two of their tour shirts and love getting comments from people who have no clue that it's a band shirt or who moxy is. People always read "your new girlfriend" and say, "oh that's so funny; I love your shirt"...and they really don't even get it. And the "I love Canadian boys" shirt always calls for explaining...not to mention all the justifying I had to do to my then boyfriend (a major fruhead might I add, yet he still thought it screamed "boys! sleep with me!) ARGH!!! Can we quit this? "So contrary to the desparate sign, most patrons always "please rewind!" And the clerks don't mind, they're very kind, the only stickler has resigned" That is saying (paraphrased): "Contrary to the idea of desparation that the "Please Rewind!" signs all around the video store give off, most people who rent video do rewind them. For the rest of the customers that don't fall into the "most patrons" category and who don't rewind their videos, the clerks don't even mind, which is also contrary to the idea of desparation that the signs give off. The only person who did mind no longer works at the store." The contrary to the desparate sign part goes with two disconnected thoughtsm one being "most patrols always please rewind" and the other that the "clerks don't mind".
