I don't understand it either, it's like trying to put a format on a band that doesn't fit a format. Aagh...I have things I want to say and can't figure out the right way to say them! Okay, if this comes across wrong, sorry. I don't think it's so much trying very deliberately to act like clowns or be very serious. I think it's more of a growing and experimenting type thing or just happens to be where creative energy is being channeled. This is probably gonna sound weird, but I guess what I mean is not really having total control over certain ways things work out. I'm not explaining this very well. Okay, I like to write and this is the best example I can think of. (I'm big on examples. :) Have you ever been writing something, and you start it out with the intention of it being one way and it ends up completely different when you're finally done with the first draft and all the crossings - -out and everything? Or you have an idea, but you don't quite know what it'll turn out like until you start to work on it and even then you piggy back off those ideas to different ideas? Or drawing or painting something? You might have an idea of what it'll look like in your head, but you end up doing it differently? I also don't think of it so much as a clown "act" just part of them, and the serious side is also a part. (A clown act to me from now on will always be getting to a leadership camp and having about 7 different people dressed as clowns smiling and taking your luggage and showing you around. Icebreaker. :) I personally love both the clowning stuff and the serious stuff, I think LN has a nice mix of both. And though I usually prefer LN over Thornhill, I've grabbed Thornhill to play numerous times because it's a great album too. While I love the humor type stuff, I also love the slow or serious stuff and love the guys (among other reasons) because they're always doing something interesting and growing musically. Okay, realizing how weird this post sounds..I'm done anyway. :o) - -------------> Ln ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 22:54:49 GMT From: Irene Subject: Moxy on Canada AM?! Just when i thought my infatuation under control, I see these wonderful pictures of ________... *swoon* [1] Those are awesome, definitely awesome! 2) There's been a thread going on and off about having your name in a song (i.e. Donna, Joanna, Lucy, etc) Well, I'm a Stones song, tho the first time I heard it wasn't until college... kinda cool having half a fraternity house singing "Angie, Aaaaaaaangie" for your birthday (well, the lyrics changed a bit, but anyway). 3) National Post article or pic or whatever. I give up, I can't get access to it but I'm not all that concerned. I'm sure that eventually I'll catch the clue 4) The challenge to travel out west: as much as I'd love to (as would Norg and my best friend Brian and my friend Bret and a few others), I'm now flat broke thanks to my quasi-midwest jaunt (it's hard for me to consider Ohio midwest, but i suppose it is... certainly is flat enough!) 5) Mapquest still sucks, I don't care what anyone says. The least they could do was mention SOMETHING about the flats or the pretty (and distracting) blue bridge in Ohio... who knew that's where we had to go??? 6) re: Vika's wasabe sig. ROTFLMAO!!! That was priceless, I loved it!!! :^) 7) Maggie's shakey things [2]: Since you're in Rochester, this shouldn't be too hard for you... Archimage or Casablanca on Monroe Ave, 600 block... Music Lover's shop on Monroe and Clover (Pittsford/Brighton), Many of those nature-type shops (World of Science, Natural Surroundings, whatever the hell they call themselves these days). Music (instrument) stores or many toy stores will often carry them. You can also check out some of the stores in Eastview Mall out in Victor... I can't remember the names of the stores but there are two stores whose focus are education and child development. As music is a large part of child development, they might have cool shaker instruments there. 8) I finally scored my first setlist at the Columbus show... can't really do a review because it's kinda like sensory overload... priceless thoughts: - -Tobey doing his "Goth Dance" at Jian's request on Fri nite... oh my it was priceless - -BG, well, the entire show really... In spite of the tech problems with sound the guys were great. - -Sheryl, you really are a rude insensitive B!tch! *hugs* thanks babe - -Seeing my former FruCon hotel mates... and yes, i fixed the leak in the air mattress... bring on February!!! - -the look on Tobey's face (after he realized what he was looking at) as Trace, Lori and I presented our WonderFru Powers bracelets (black bands with FRUVOUS in big silver letters, courtesy of Byzantium Bead store in Columbus) - -an apologetic explanation for "Fell In Love" not being on the setlist for Sun nite from Dave... I'm so glad he remembered. I kinda wish I'd driven to Columbus, just for the chance to talk a little longer. - -chatting with Jian, despite him being tired and drained... that hasn't happened in awhile... and if it weren't for his exhaustion and my very patient ride trying not to pass out in the doorway, I'm sure we'd have chatted longer. - -nice words from Mike about being at the video shoot, I was touched that he said something again (he'd already said thank you that Wed). - -Basking in the glow of FruHead-dom... y'all are awesome, thanks so much for being so cool. - -Meeting so many people (mostly over food or crash space). I really wish I could travel more... needs me my own aeroplane! That's all for now, gotta get myself home and get some sleep... - --Angie (with a silent 'e'), the well-traveled. And the clerks don't mind, they're very kind, the only stickler has resigned" I was thinking about this the other day, and I lost my certainty about the meaning of the lines. It's prolly one of these two options, though: (1) "The only stickler" is a certain customer who always refused to rewind his tapes, but fortunately he has resigned. (2) "The only stickler" is a certain employee who insists on enforcing the "please rewind" policy, and gives the customers heck when they don't. Fortunately, he has resigned. Well, which is it? I was always under the impression that it was definitely the option behind door number 2. Reasons are: a) the clerks are the last people mentioned, and it seems to be referring to them; and b) it makes more sense for the clerk to resign than for the customer to do so, unless it means "resigned themself to no longer renting there", which simply does not scan well, even in Video Bargainville. Don't know where I'm going on that argument, but in any case I have to say it's Number 2 (no, not the Austin Powers character). I was wondering myself about the first question, and came up with a hypothesis of my own, but I'm open to suggestions. Anyhoo, my hypothesis is that "he " is Death, the Grim Reaper, whatever you want to call him. The first line really clicks in that theory, "no reward for the early bird" seeming to make sense as a bit of an understatement. The dysfunctional line seems to indicate that "he" is fairly old, seeing as a lot of us have been using dysfunctional for a fairly long time, and death is certainly old, timeless if you will. The rest of the verse refers to the fact that all individuals described, nicotine users, butchers, bakers, boozers, skinny and fat people -- hell, everyone -- is headed for the same fate, the grave. As it fits in with the rest of the song, Dave is contemplating getting older, weaker, complacent, corrupted, out of touch, etc., and in this verse specifically, contemplating his own mortality. Yeah, kind of a downer, but at least he has a good attitude about it. Sorta. No clue about Hate Letter's quiet vocals, though. Maybe they just wanted to be sure that you'd crank it.
