I fell in love with them recently from a borrowed Fool's Progress cd. They were originally Acoustic Junction, became Fool's Progress for one album, then back to Acoustic Junction. I missed Reed's (singer/guitarist) explanation of the name craziness last night, but I believe it's got a lot to do with the record company. I'm glad they went back, I personally like the name Acoustic Junction better. Anyway, they rocked. Not going to do a review here, per se... but I am interested to know if there are any Fruheads out there who are also AJ fans. They are based in Colorado, but Reed said they have a big following on the east coast, and their newly released live album was recorded at the Iron Horse in May. Talked with Reed a little bit before the show, he saw my EFO t-shirt... I told him they played in Boulder last night. He said "Oh, yeah, I know them. They've been around for a while, huh?" Cool. Then Rob and Reed were kind of chatting and Skip and I were talking about where we could find AJ cd's. I told Skip that I was just at Media Play and they didn't have any, but they did have a lot of Moxy Fruvous. Reed turned to me and said, "Moxy Fruvous? We just played a gig with them this summer! They're funny guys... They're from Canada, right?" And we chatted a bit about Moxy Fruvous. I told Reed I thought AJ and Fruvous would be an awesome show. He said, yeah, it was fun. So, that's my frucontent, I just thought it was cool. They played with Fruvous I believe Reed said in Norwalk, CT at some festival. So, what I'm really saying is, if you get a chance to see AJ, you should do it. They aren't nearly the showmen that Moxy Fruvous are, and I'd probably never travel to see them, but I do plan to keep my eye out for any future Colorado gigs. For anyone out there like me, a total sucker for vocal harmonies, AJ is definitely worth trying. Reed is the lead singer, but bassist Curtis sings harmony on most songs, as does multi-instrumentalist Tim. They even did an a capella song in three-part harmony that was just incredible. Tim is amazing. He plays keyboards, violin, flute, harmonica... very talented. Curtis picked up the mandolin for one song, and percussionist Tom had a kick-ass solo. He's no Eddie, but then, who is? And I am smitten with Reed. I mean totally, totally smitten. I could barely take my eyes off him for the entire show. It's not that he's all that good-looking, in the classical sense of the word... he has a dishevelled "just woke up 30 minutes before sound check" look about him, but he's got one of those voices that just makes me melt... (o; Plus it doesn't hurt that he seems like a really nice, down to earth kinda guy. So if there's anyone out there who IS an AJ fan, speak up! I'd like to hear from you. And for anyone who hasn't heard them, try to check them out if you get the chance. They were desribed last night as being "folk-rock", which I think is pretty accurate. Their web site is http://www.acousticjunction.com/ Please check it out! OK, I'll stop rambling now, my Acoustic Junction pitch is officially over... YES!!!! I'm almost as excited as when I went to leadership camp this summer and found 3 (count 'em 3) people who've heard of Fruvous and like them. I love Acoustic Junction, though oddly enough, I first knew them as Fool's Progress, because I heard about them from a kinda sorta friend when they were Fool's Progress. The latest official word that I've heard is that there is NO Madison show. Apparently it was a choice of their playing either Milwaukee or Madison, and the Milwaukee gig won. Those of us doing the Midwest tour are quite disappointed, but there's still Minneapolis (and if it weren't for that show, my family would never see me). Sigh...such is life. First of all, it was written by the three Brothers Gibb, also know to many as the Bee Gees, and I'm sure the four Frulads could have put something better in its place. Secondly, I know it's got a sentimental love song aspect to it, but let's face facts: this is about a guy who killed someone (reason for murder is unlisted in the song) and is now accepting his sentence of the death penalty. Hmmmm. If I'm gonna hear about murder, at least make it satirical like Splatter Splatter, not some mellowed-out gangsta rap predecessor. Secondly, It almost sounds as if Fruvous is coming out in support of the death penalty or something... what's up with that? Well, if you thing I'm wrong, lemme have it, but still....
