But then again, I'm staying for all 3 shows... For a single show, I don't know... I've done 4 hours a few times and been fine with it, and I'll be doing 6 to get to NYC from New Hampshire in December, but those are weeknights... on a weekend, when I knew it was going to be a special show, I'd say that 10 would be about my limit... (of course, that's my limit. Not what my mother would actually let me do... YMMV) ;-) And again, as so many others have put so much more eloquently, I go to Frushows just as much to see familiar faces as I do to see the band- Frushows are the perfect road trip opportunities in my opinion... :o) Amanda ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 01:36:14 GMT From: LSan497884@aol.com Subject: Re: Driving to Frushows In a message dated 9/9/99 7:04:24 PM Central Daylight Time, FruCake1@aol.com writes: > How far (hours-wise) would you drive to go to a Fruvous show? We drove about 12 hours in June to go to the Ann Arbor shows. I can't always do that, of course, but this weekend worked out for us. In your situation, you've had the opportunity to go to a lot of other shows this summer, but we're a little isolated out here in Iowa. (Not totally; MF will be in Iowa on Nov. 2 -- a weeknight unfortunately, in terms of anyone coming from afar.) Other shows in our "area" (which has to be anything within in about 5 hours) are either on weeknights or in 18-21+ venues (or both). So, I knuckle under and will make the effort occasionally. We feel really lucky because we'll also have EFO and Susan Werner here this fall as well (same all-ages venue). I saw both of them here this summer at an outdoor concert series by the river, and really fell for both. We'll be first in line for those shows as well! As I said, I'm occasionally up for the distance, but it has mostly to do with the fact that that's the ONLY way we'll see them live. It's a haul, but the guys are worth it! *Lois (Fogeyfru) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Sep 1999 21:19:50 -0400 From: Donna Hunt Subject: Re: Driving to Frushows FruCake1@aol.com wrote: > I have a question for the group. > How far (hours-wise) would you drive to go to a Fruvous show? My dear Lisa, :) While 10 hrs is certainly a conceivable amount of time to spend on a frutrip (right, Joe? ;) usually 10 hrs would include a couple of shows, and usually "Big" shows... You know, the Iron Horse, The Ark, etc., etc. (And Colorado. I *know* Bridget, I *know*) :) And *I* certainly would never say don't come to Ohio. :) But if you're coming for BG, then you should try and make Cowlumbus, or Cleveland, or Both, since I'm guessing (and I am definitely guessing, so Josh and co. you can let me know if I'm mistaken) that the Black Swamp set will be a short one. So I guess my advice is: Sure, 10 hrs, No Problem! For a short festival set? Maybe not. Maybe you want to save your 10 hr trip for... I dunno... What's shakin??? Here's the latest from my sadly overdriven mind: 1) FruCake... is it worth it to drive 10 hrs??? for one show, that's kinda pushin it in my book (then again, I've driven to and from Toronto twice in one week, and plan on driving to Ohio at the end of same week...), if you're gonna go, go big! Go early for the Cleveland show... call off and stay for the Columbus show! Or, buy you a ticket on an aeroplane! :^) 2) I made it afterall! Sorry for my whining, I don't do it often but when it hits it hits hard!!! I'll go down in history as one of them blurs on the Fruvous video!!! I had a great time, I got there late but stayed to the bitter end (when they said "It's a wrap" then had to re-shoot the final scene). Accidentally got to see some of the lads stripping off shirts (oops, they need curtains up there! I high-tailed it back into the studio to avoid the temptation of gawking *smirk*) I won't give away what we were doing, personally I think y'all should be surprised but lovin' it! Hope people snag a copy for FruCon the Third, should it happen *hint hint* It was amusing to see what they were doing to create certain effects tho... and I have a new "outlook" on green... *smirk* 3) melanie, regarding Groupwise: we use v. 5.2 here at work (tho I use Netscape webmail for newsgroup stuff so my admin doesn't fry for overload). That I know of their isn't a way to adjust the line length, but at the same time I've never had a problem with reading msgs from or in groupwise. it does piss me off the way it stacks forwarded messages, I suppose if I weren't so lazy I'd figure out how to adjust it. Of the three I normally work with (GW, Lotus Notes, Outlook) Outlook is definitely the most user friendly...but in overall usage I actually prefer Notes (tho Outlook takes no brainpower and plays more nicely with others). Eh, I think I just said a whole lot of nothin, so nevermind :^) 4) re: the voices of the lads and/or Dave's voice specifically. Something I've noticed from a lot of performers as they progress through their albums... they're voices and techniques change. a-Excellent case in point is Whitney Houston on her first album. Her voice is completely different from the way she sounded on The Bodyguard Soundtrack. It's fuller, richer, and well... she does all those damned embellishments when I wish she'd just sing the damned song but that's just me... b-another example, tho not so flattering, is Mariah Carey. She breaks onto the scene doing those operatic [caterwauling] embellishments in her song... in a live performance of a song off of her second album its obvious her voice is strained and thin in those upper ranges because that kind of embellishment isn't meant for an R&B Pop tour kinda performance. I've noticed that as performers get older and sing more frequently (and in the FruFour's case, sing together more frequently) they begin to develop and refine their style of singing, and work for their more comfortable ranges. As for Dave specifically... I don't doubt that smoking has had an effect on his voice... but what I hear in Thornhill is more of a jazzier, laid back, relaxed attitude (although the other day Earthquakes sounded downright lounge-lizard schmaltzy [sp??} to me!). I have always perceived Dave as a Jazz man, listening to him jam on the piano or Scat with Mike, listening to him noodling on the guitar yesterday (tho it sounded like he was playing with a bluesy or bluegrassish riff at times). 5) re: KatieWow and Misty's exchange- Misty, not that I'm taking sides or anything, but I can understand Katie's exasperation. The clarification on the New Millennium was discussed at length just a few short weeks ago (like more than a week's worth of posting from numerous people). granted, if you're lurking you might miss some of these things... but if you're the same Misty I seem to vaguely recall that you first delurked a month or so back (like, before FalconRidge end of July). So, everyone take a deep breath, and let's begin again... 6) I dunno if I'm right or wrong in announcing this because I haven't seen anything yet... but Jude came into the video shoot yesterday and announced (amongst other things, like local Canadian Fruvous Airtimes) that ----the Rochester show has been moved from 12/10 to 11/24... the Kingston show for that day is off.---------- Please await the official announcement from Jude to clarify, as I'm certain she'll post an updated itinerary after the video chaos settles down. (No venue for the Roch show was set as of yesterday). I think that's it. I'll see many of you happy people Tomorrow nite or sometime this weekend. Have a great one and wish me some sleep...
