Jian's voice has also lowered over the years. Compare some original recordings to those on Live Noise, especially Fly and BJ Don't Cry. *much* lower sounding on Live Noise. (and who's that doing the intro to Fly?! It sounds nothing like any of them...) I believe the intro to Fly on Live Noise is Jian, but I could be wrong about that. If it is, his voice there sounds different from some of the other between song banter too. Some people's singing voices sound really different from their talking voices. As for their voices being lower, I'm not sure. Jian's (?) "How can I refuse you?" line in IWHO isn't exactly low. I don't think it necessarily has to do so much with their voices having changed drastically as opposed to it could just be that different sorts of songs call for different things, including different vocal ranges, inflection, etc. I haven't heard them in concert since the end of last October, but the only way I'd really think of their voices as having changed quite a bit is if they couldn't hit notes they used to be able to. Which is entirely possible, if they're writing songs in lower notes, but then again it sounds good anyway. If you compare some songs, like say Sad Girl and Bargainville (particularly the Live Noise version) Sad Girl sounds higher. But comparisons of different songs is kind of hard because there's always the "Well COULD they have sang Bargainville higher?" Which we probably won't know, and it might not sound good anyway. In all their songs I can sing with them and some an octave higher, which is fairly "expected" because girls are supposed to have higher voices than guys. There are some I couldn't sing a whole octave higher if I tried for ages because they already start off fairly high. I think I'm kinda partial to thinking different songs call for different things and it's not so much that their singing has changed all that much. Like someone commented, in their earlier stuff, they do sound a little younger, but that's about all I can distinguish for differences. I don't think age really has to do a whole lot with how high you can sing. Sure, it has some importance, but I think it's not just one generalization thing, like "Oh, he's getting old, he can't sing high anymore." (Not that I'm implying that's what any of you were saying, it was just an example.) I mean, look at Steven Tyler...How old's he? :) Hope that all made sense. - ----------------> Ln, the tired. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Sep 1999 15:01:07 -0400 From: dopeytoo Subject: nyu? does anyone on this newsgroup go to nyu? email me if you do... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Sep 1999 15:10:02 -0400 From: "Ken Perschke" Subject: Re: kind of OT - EFO review > And to anyone out there who HASN'T seen EFO live, > do yourself a huge favor and GO if you get the > chance. I also missed the backup vocals. i'm a sucker for harmony. but, i can see artistic reasons for omitting them. i was afraid the passion was gone from the song. that it was a "one-shot deal". but when i heard it again live, he did it again. no, the intro was different and he didnt cry. but...i swooned. oh, did i swoon! the emotion was there. very there. it left me feeling exhausted afterword (only to find myself re-pumped in the next few songs). it was amazing. note: over the passed few weeks thornhill has grown on me alot. i enjoy it now, much more than i did. i even found IWHO making me misty this morning (although, it could definately be period induced hormonalism). so, thornhill's IWHO cant hold a candle to the raw emotion in jian's voice (and body language) of the live show, but it can suppliment if you can close your eyes and imagine, and put in some emotion of your own. solem genna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Sep 1999 21:07:01 -0700 From: cookie Subject: Re: [Interp] MPG (very long) Arbie wrote: > > Lori at fruhead dot com wrote in message > >I mean, joining the Peace Corps or building a commune is nice and all, but > >who's got the *time*? I'm honoured that you remember what I do for a living. :) Um, just about everybody who's had anything to say about this is right. Really anal musicologists are into that whole "Everybody's a Baritone" theory, which for all practical purposes might be true, but isn't very helpful. When we break down people voices into parts, not only is range considered (Lots of people have extremely large ranges--men especially) but what you sound like in what range, texture, intonation is always a question, and most of all, where people are most comfortable singing. I think that the guys are certainly singing lower... (except Murray is getting more comfortable in his tenor range, if you want my opinion...) and yes, age is a factor, voices are always growing and changing. [Women's voices don't even fully mature until their mid-thirties. ] *But* I think a large part of them singing lower is that they're getting more comfortable settling into their voices. Like, Dave's always had the range that he sings in on Thornhill--but now he's allowing himself to sing in it. It's the best part of his range, if you ask me. Another part of their singing lower, in my opinion, is their steering away from acapella songs. They don't have to be singing in a certain range so that they all know where the others will be. Like, they've played the "Do you want to hear that in 4-part Harmony?" Game, and in order for them to do that successfully, they all need to know where the others will be. You know? Breaking away from that allows them the freedom to sing where they're most comfortable, which is (not surprisingly), a little lower. I always feel sorry for Dave in GWS. :) That's on damn hard song to sing for anybody--the arrangement is extremely difficult--and those thirds with Mike are darn high--usually they're singing it off-mic after they've been singing for well over and hour... anyway, I digress. Bravo for every time they pull it off. Men's voices are hard to diagnose because men have both a "head voice" range as well as a "falsetto"--- what Jian is doing at the end of IWHO in falsetto, it isn't actually his "real" voice. I feel like I've gone on long enough. There will be a short quiz. CLEVELAND! TOMORROW!
