First, I'll reiterate what Katrin said: Maria, you're not one of the posters whose "writing" (and I use that term loosely) taxes my patience. >The aol newsreader doesn't even have spell check (I don't think). Chairman Bill, however, most likely saw it fit to include one with your computer -- and with most people's computers. So there's really very little excuse for anyone with access to the 'net to post in a nearly illiterate way. Sometimes >I >may not captalize correctly, or spell correctly, or use the "..." instead of >a >comma because I'm too lazy for the alt code. But, just because I don't check >and recheck my spelling, grammar, and whatever else may be wrong doesn't mean >my thought is any less vaild than someone who _did_ proofread his or her >paper >to make it perfectly accurate/"perfect". No it doesn't, and I don't think I or anyone else here made the claim that a post needs to be perfect to be legible, informative, often enjoyable reading. (I posted my initial salvo on this thread this morning, then noticed that one of my uses of "about" was missing the a. That's an "oops" I permit anyone, not just myself.) > I might meet someone that says >"ain't" or "not don't", and it would bother me, THAT's the point. It's an initial irritation, and first impressions DO matter, more than anyone likes to think. but I certaintly wouldn't >think >that person is showing contempt for me. And probably they're not. Most people don't want to impress others badly. And you have no hints upon first meeting this person that others already have protested the same behavior, to no avail. *That's* when I start to think it has less to do with inability than disrespect and stubborn flouting of "da man"'s rules, with little understanding of the point of the rules. I also would listen to that person >in >spite of his or her grammatical errors, because something totally valid or >"intelligent" could come out of that person's mouth. Of course, I'd probably >have a certain judgement about that person at first, because of his or her >grammatical errors, but I would be very open for that judgement to change. Would you also be open to suggesting that this person improve his (I'm going to use the universal he/she here) communication style -- to benefit not just you, but him as well? To confessing to him that yes it DOES make a difference in that initial perception of him -- and while he may just think you're being snobby, and that your initial perception doesn't affect him at all anyway, if he shows the same carelessness, or lack of willingness to learn and apply better, with other people it certainly WILL affect him? I'm thinking job interviews here. I'm thinking that the members of this newsgroup, by very dint of their being here, obviously are interested not only in Moxy Früvous but in communicating their views (about Moxy Früvous, about grammar, about candy) to others. It stands to reason that they may pursue life paths that involve communication in other areas. Several people are writers or would-be-writers; others hold technical jobs that require intensive interaction with, and the ability to explain things to, others. If an interviewer or supervisor in this situation is turned off by incomprehensible grammar, unclear thought structure, doubts about the applicant's ability to communicate clearly with others, or the perception that the other person doesn't care how he presents his/her views -- quite frankly, this stubborn refusal to improve one's communications when people have indicated that they have trouble understanding them is not a good career move. Someone who can't construct a sentence will NOT get a job in publishing, nor will he be published. Someone who can't orgnize thoughts into a clear, "outlined" structure will NOT get a job explaining technology to those who need to understand it. Saying it's not right to judge someone on this because it doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of the thought going on inside the person's head may be monumentally fair-minded, but it is also as irrelevant as saying that someone who doesn't have a grasp(refuses to demonstrate a grasp) of basic table manners, or who doesn't know(refuses) not to pick his nose in public, shouldn't have his character or ability judged on that. Utterly true. And utterly inapplicable, when the job does not just involve doing something in an environment bereft of others, but presenting the work to some sort of audience. (Readers, business meetings, judges, what have you.) When the person evaluating a job applicant or employee (or even a college applicant) has more concerns than "does this person have something to say about Früvous that might interest me?" -- concerns more along the lines of being confident that he not only can do the work, but can present the work clearly, accurately, and attractively (to others, who will go elsewhere if not convinced by this person) - -- it DOES behoove the applicant to at least make an effort to present himself well. Expecting someone you want to pay attention to you to look past all the distracting, sometimes provoking stuff and dig deeper to find their "true value" is sheer arrogance, not just a > stupid little >imperfection(s) cloud(ing) the the window in front of the real thought and >importance. Most of life is based on interaction with other people.
