I'd also been kicked in the head a few times from crowd surfers and mosh pits. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Dave. Well, not Dave, but someone who looked EXACTLY like him!!! Music TORONTO - Mike Myer's Wayne's World was based on the beer-drinking, metal-loving, black-t-shirt-wearing Scarborough teens. Pop group Moxy Fruvous's latest album is based on and titled after Thornhill. The connotation associated with Scarborough and suburbs like the affluent Forest Hill is the same the world over, but what of Thornhill? A combination of the two, perhaps? "It was unquestionably middle and upper middle class, but it was also a bit of a stoner culture," says co-vocalist Jian Ghomeshi of the days he and his bandmates grew up north of Steeles. "So it was discovering your friend's new stereo and going there to listen to the Stones and the Beatles and the Who." Ghomeshi, who has long left Thornhill for downtown Toronto, returned to his breeding ground with Moxy-mates Michael Ford, David Matheson and Murray Foster to shoot the photos for the back of Thornhill's jewel case and CD sleeve. "It would only be the real thing if we actually went up there and did a photo session right in front of my parents house," he says. In one of the photos, you can almost see where fellow musician Hayden grew up. "There's a lot of bands and actors and artists who have gone on to considerable fame that have come out of Thornlea and Thornhill," says Ghomeshi, citing members of By Divine Right, Universal Honey, Philosopher Kings and hHead as examples. Ghomeshi even used to plant himself outside Rush's rehearsal space on Doncaster for hours to listen to the prog-rock band practice. So while a new song called "Hate Letter" is littered with references to Thornhill, the hate is towards a person rather than the suburb. "It's a tip of the hat to Thornhill," explains Ghomeshi. "When we say Thornhill, we mean, first of all, our school, Thornlea, which was very much, at the time, a school for the arts. We all met in the theatre department and it had an open concept, very liberal. We'd call our teachers by their first names. Some were hippies. A lot of the grading was pass-fail. It was very forward-thinking. I think that led to a real fertile ground for creative thinking and critical thinking." - -- hey, if you're going to get lost, go big or go home, eh? - Veronica Once again proving that *all* roads lead to OTville, - Trace ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 00:16:51 GMT From: "^kat^" Subject: Re: keswick!!! hey, ammf! just a qwickie note to say hi from connecticut--i'm sort of settled in here, and while i have yet to meet anyone on campus who is a die-hard frufan, i've found a few who might be easily converted. in the meantime, i'll see you all at the keswick in november--mom emailed this morn to let me know that we've got tix on the aisle in row bb! from what i understand, those are pretty good seats... anyway, take care & keep indulging us with tales of far-off frushows-- ^kat^ "i must be strong and carry on" http://fly.to/the.midway.after.dark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 00:00:05 GMT From: murmbeetle@my-deja.com Subject: Re: "Jesus, she's back" ( was Re: Thornhill reflections, revisited) (sorry for the humoungus humoungus snip, but) I find it to be the opposite, mostly. For some reason, this line has always reminded me more of a child's point of view than a wife's. The nursery rhyme motif and doll reference bring to mind the image of a frightened child and a ruined innocence. My interpretation of this song has always been more focused on a full family than on purely spousal abuse, but that may be a personal bias. > Mike's background line is the hardest for me to understand. Is it the narrator > giving his last thoughts on the matter? Is it the man talking > to the woman? Is it the narrator talking directly to the man? No > guesses from me. Anyone else have any good ideas for those words? Again, I always saw these lines as coming from a child, but in this case the speaker would be an adult survivor of domestic terror: the abusive male figure, confronted with his deeds after a long pact of silence, might certainly be startled. "I hope I didn't scare you" is a nice sarcastic line in this context. The last couple lines I always heard as "We didn't do nothing to you but leave you alone, leave you alone..." which the abusive character might have perceived as abandonment and the excuse for more 'punishment,' while the victims might have seen being 'left alone' as pure bliss. That explains the 'lucky bastard' line, for me. This is still my favorite Früvous song, and it's one I've studied a lot. I agree with about 87% of Chad's excellent interpretation. The anger and sadness in these lyrics still touches me, and I've always found the unusual harmonies strangely compelling...I just wish they'd skip the contrived, unlovely "Michigan Militia" just once at a show I can attend, and put this song on the setlist in its place. I'm starting to get paranoid about Michi, really. Now, if only I could figure out the chant in the beginning of It's Too Cold...Dave's part, after "1...2...3...Dave-O!" from Jian and right before the instruments kick in.
