Tonight I saw the Gorilla Rep's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. in Washington Square Park. There is no Shakespeare production I enjoy more. Every summer for the last 10 years the Gorilla Rep has put on two plays in WSP, AMND and something else, this year "Twelth Night." What makes their productions unique is that they do not perform the work in one place in the park but move around the entire SW corner with the audiance following them around This works particulary well with AMND. I usually don't enjoy offbeat productions of Shakespeare but Gorilla Rep is an exception. They bring tremendous energy to the performances and take full advantage of the location they are using. They will include the audiance in their antics, When a hat is mentioned they took one off someone's head. They grabbed an umbrella and used it as a sword. This is not to say its all clowning around, they stay true to the material, which of course is a farce and putting "business" in it highlights the material, instead of distracting from it. Christopher Sanderson's direction was as usual brilliant. With limited costumes and no sets he manages to recreate the forest by Athens and the Athenian Court convincingly. The action never sags. A Midsummer's Night's Dream has always reminded me of a Marx Brother's movie. With the Fairies and the Tradesman being the Marx Bros, parts and the main plot being the romantic plot interlude that the were played by the Ostensible romantic leads. Of course the parts without the Marx Bros are fillers and you just wait for them to get back on the screen. In other productions that's how I have often felt about the main plot, that of the Athenian Youths in the woods. In this production the play keeps its pace even in their scenes. The scene where Lysander and Demetrious fight over Helena and revile Hermia is particulary good. Geiselle Jones as Hermia and Adria Lang as Helena play the scene for all it is worth. The entire cast is excellant but Matt Daniels, who is repeating the role of Bottom, stands out. If there were justice he'd be a star, He is as talented a comic actor as I've seen. When he is on stage he commands your attention. The highlight of the show is the finale, the performance of the play within the play, Pyramis and Thisbe. I had never realized this before but it is a forerunner of Mystery Science Theater 3000. A truly bad play (On MST 3K its a movie) is shown and people in the audiance make fun of it. The scene also demonstated the spontanaity of the performance. When a child shouted something out they incorperated it right into the scene. Every performance is different. The play is performed on Thurday and Saturday nights in the SW corner of Washington Square Park at 8 PM through September 25th. Twelth Night is performed Friday and Sunday nights at 8 PM through September 26th. Just a simple statement of fact. >We just get better sets than you to. :P hmmm. Now if *ever* something was open to subjective interpretation, it would be a which-show's-setlist-is-best argument. And not having been to every single Früshow ever, and not knowing the guys' "goal", for lack of a better word for it, for any given show, it strikes me as just silly. How can one compare the BJ and Rachel Set to the Chia Pets Plus Dave Set to the Früvous Takes Over Dan Bern's Set Set to the Luxor Set to Lori's DeFrüginizing Set (okay, that really wasn't their primary goal, but you get the idea ... ) I can't even compare the most excellent Annapolis 8/18 show with the setlist from the Point the night before -- *obviously* two very different shows, with two very different objectives, and just because I happened to attend the Annapolis show and not the Bryn Mawr one doesn't mean I'm ready to concede that a show including rarities, played for an audience comprised of a large number of relatively hardcore followers, necessarily exceeds the quality of a show intended to reward the loyal AND promote the new AND entice the more casual radio listener. I can't compare a show I've heard to one I've only heard *of*. ;) What the Thornwood set DID do was highlight my appreciation -- I adore the rarities all the more because they *are* rarities. But that doesn't mean the more usual setlist staples don't measure up. So yes, chad, Annapolis was a special, wonderful show with unique moments, including 4 songs I'd never heard live. Kudos and thanks muchly to the guys for that. But I've been to very few Fruvous shows that DON'T have those unique moments. (Otherwise, what would be the point of going back again and again?) In the last 3 weeks alone I've heard live at least 9 Früvous songs, new arrangements thereof, or covers that I'd never heard before -- so I'm not ready to subscribe to any notion that they hold back until they get to the fair shores of the Chesapeake Bay. :) - -- Lori, still crazy after 25 stamps/31 appearances. :) ------------------------------ Date: 22 Aug 1999 02:06:37 -0400 From: pirmann@panix.com (David Pirmann) Subject: Re: Don Dixon Don Dixon produced the Smithereens' "Especially for You", their first and probably best album. I'm happy to have it, because I put "Praying Mantis" on a lot of mix tapes, but I never put the disc in just to listen to, and I probably wouldn't have bought it if I'd listened to it beforehand. He told this story onstage, so I'm assuming that it is postable; my apologies to Jian if my assumption is incorrect. Basically, Jian told of the relationship he was involved in during the time leading up to their meteoric success with Bargainville. The success of suddenly being a "rock star" went to his head a bit, and the relationship became messy, with Jian and his girlfriend breaking up and getting back together repeatedly, and on one occasion, the break-up occuring on her birthday. That tidbit was what netted Jian a round of boos and hisses from the sisterhood of women in the crowd. He, maybe, didn't need to tell us *that* much about the inspiration of the song :-) He told us he's learned from that experience though - -- Trace trace@frumail.org "Part of a new, emerging feminist movement." ~Jian commenting on his Brittany Spears t-shirt: 7/24/99 Crisis, Get Help ~Anagram of "The Spice Girls" ------------------------------ Date: 22 Aug 1999 16:43:26 GMT From: srm9988n@aol.comicrelief (Lori at fruhead dot com) Subject: Re: Annapolis show Trace teased: >Well the objective of the Point show was to play Pisco when you >weren't there to hear it, right? ooooo, and you say *chad*'s mean?! :P - -- Lori, who regrets to announce the demise of the Pisco Hat, for those who never saw it (including the band.) I am not a particularly kind soul, but the story is pretty much as you'd expect, given the song. I feel somewhat uncomfortable relating this to folks who weren't there, but here's an abbreviated version. Jian explained that while Fruvous was in the midst of its first wave of success in Canada, he had an SO who was really great. She put up with him, but he couldn't deal with the whole committment thing. He reported that he broke up with her on her birthday; the audience hissed at this villanous act and he acknowleged that we were right to be disgusted. He described being on a plane, telling Dave about the breakup and feeling joyful and free; said it took about eight months for him to realize the terrible mistake he'd made. Apparently she waited around for seven-and-a-half. Misplaced is the song that came out of that experience. The performance last Wednesday was ths first in three years. It sounded a little rusty, but I think that added to the impression. Jian's vocal interpretation was very real; and Dave did a credible job on the violin, which makes me wonder if other violin songs will show up in the setlist from time to time. - --Amanda Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
