But I think the definition of "single" has changed a lot in recent years, coming to mean anything that's played on radio or in videos (I guess the radio stations are given singles, but they're not on sale to the public). People rarely buy singles anymore, so they either buy albums of the artists they like, or they buy one of the increasingly popular compilations and soundtracks, which have all the "singles" thay like, without any band's subpar songs. That's the theory, at least. Josh Drury Winnipeg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 09:27:02 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: Killer Tent Lyrics?????????? Broad statements like this with no backing whatsoever aren't very nice. There is a lot of general dislike of the manufactured bands nowadays and most of it was created by a backlash against their inception. The problems at least I have with those style of bands are that they aren't 3 guys that played music out of their garage, struggled on the bar and club circuit until magic happened. They were manufactured by execs who wanted a successful business and you know what, they got a successful business out of it. Note that none of the above mentions talent at all. Each individual member of a manufactured band has talent or else they would not have passed the numerous auditions for the band. It is possible that somoene just doesn't like their music. If so, say that. It's opinion, where calling them talentless hacks is kinda unfair in my eyes. There are a lot of people that their music appeals to, and if they like it, good for them. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 11:48:34 -0500 From: "Lindsay Lion" Subject: The Keswick Waiting list I asked the woman at the box office who told me that the list is simply to let us know when tickets go on sale... - -- - --- Lindsay Lion Manager of Operations & Technology Biosyn, Inc. llion@biosyn-inc.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 11:29:07 -0400 From: Kate Bunting Subject: Annapolis (not too long) Just a note before I start heading over to Borders for the first in-store (I *love* that they're playing right around the corner from where I work!) The school song, the tricolour, the coveralls, the jackets, the universal hate of Marriott, and the inexplicable inability to cross with the lights ("It's Kingston - they'll stop!")... if you found a Queen's graduate from 50 years ago they'll all talk about the same kinds of things you experienced. And their school spirit never goes away - a Queen's graduate would bend over backwards to help another. At the same time, as a member of the Queen's Bands (the "ultimate" Queen's tradition to many people) it just plain old gets apthetic sometimes. Honestly, there's no need to wear your Queen's jacket from '77 on a regular basis. Homecoming yes. Christmas shopping in the mall, no. And no one ever looks down on you, per se, for not following the crowd. It just kinda happens. Well, for me anyway. Besides, I had my fleece and Roots boots before I got there. Each individual > member of a manufactured band has talent or else they would not have > passed the numerous auditions for the band. Each member of a manufactured band needs three things: 1) A decent voice. Lots of people have this, though, so it doesn't really narrow things down. It helps if you have a great voice (and often one or two members of the group do), but this won't necessarily get you anywhere if you don't have these other two criteria: 2) Good looks. Sad but true. Videos are the medium of choice to reach teen audiences today, and it helps immensely if the band is "hot". 3) A marketable personality, and stage presence. Record labels often like good clean wholesome band members who thank Jesus in their liner notes. It also helps if you can dance. Listed nowhere are the abilities to write music, play any sort of instrument, or appeal at an intellectual level. Sure, the "band" members may be talented, but this talent is usually limited to being able to sing and dance, and to look good while doing it. I'm one of those people who prefers the bands that started in someone's garage or basement (or on a street corner), writing original material and experimenting 'till they found what they liked (and then experimented some more). I tend to find them a lot more interesting.
