I was standing front row as usual. during the sound check all that I could really get out of Jake was that he was going to be loud. I was lamenting not having earplugs and even thought of running out and buying a pair. When he started I was pleasantly suprised. He played wonderful blues and rock. His guitar playing was amazing. The reaction of the fruheads I was with was all positive. I will definetly see him again if I notice him playing. For those of you not keeping up with this soap opera I got chastized by Jian for buying a used promo copy of Thornhill before its release and then giving it a luke warm review. Actually Jian said I panned it but that's not really true. As Pennance I wrote poems for all the lads and said my Hail Murray and Our Fruvous that Art in Thornhill. I gave each member of fruvous the poem I wrote for him and a copy of the one I wrote for the whole band. Jian has granted me absolution so no more conscience is now clear. I'm posting the poems on my site at Fruhead.com but it isn't working yet, When it is I'll give the link so you can see them. When I got to the seaport yesterday, very early as usual, the only one there I knew was Maureen. It was the first time that I really talked to her alone for a length of time and as usual with a fruhead, I found we had many other interests in common. The one that I particulary liked was the playwright Tom Stoppard. I later found another Fruhead who is a Stoppard fan, are there any others out there? I later got to talk about Rubik's Cube with Lisa, Quantum Mechanics with Sarah, Religion and philosophy with Eileen and other assorted stuff with Scott. Scott is now officially St Scott for his great deed of posting the words of "Killer Tents" on the NG. After the show I met Denise for the first time and we walked backed to the subway together and talked about Rennaisaince fairs among other things. I think I have more good conversations at one Moxy show that I do in a week of talking to the random mix of people I meet elsewhere. I KNEW there had to be someone else who thought this guy (and his band) were smoking! My Lovely Wife and myself were Stage Murray (in front of the PA speakers..RIGHT in front!) and we were grooving very nicely, thank you. I had considered buying Jake's CD there, but I knew that CD World ()in Jersey) would carry it for less cash. I was rather disappointed in our side of the stage, though. There were several fans that enjoyed making comments (rather loudly) for Jake to "get off the stage" so the Boys would come on sooner. Rather impolite..(but these were the same people who were yelling for KoS as the encore..perhaps that was all they knew from MF, eh?) All in all, a great show, and I thought Jake , the drummer and the incredible disappearing bass player did a great job. (the on'stage sound crew, however, was less than stellar..when the bass rig frapped out, the amount of shrugs and slow moving stage personnel was interesting, to say the least.) I also really liked it a lot the first time through (a few days ago) and it also continues to grow on me each time I hear it -- I've listened to it 5 or 6 times (less than some of you, I know) and each time more of it hits me "where I live." I'm not into the more finite dissection of different songs--I really listen for lyrics and the overall musicality of the songs (not "kickass bass line here" and "loved the ahhs there," etc.). I just found that several of the songs held some personal meaning for me. (My favorites are still Gulf war Song and Fly.) In no particular order, these are my impressions from the album: Downsizing--Having recently gone through this phenomenon myself (actually a little over a year ago) I found this a very meaningful song lyrics-wise. As for the length of the song, all I can say is that downsizing is a long and arduous process and the length of the sonf for me was symbolic for that. It's an agonizing experience, knowing that it is going to happen and just waaiittiinngg for that shoe to drop. The vocals on the song reflected the feeling that one experiences during this process. I really can identify. You Can't Be Too Careful: Having said the above, the next thing to do is go on and get past it. Therefore the lyrics "you can't be too careful; don't agonize over it...go for it" are also part of my current mantra. I want to make a life change and go back to school to get an MA in Social work then an LISW--something I've felt pulled to for a long time. So I just need to buck up, stop agonizing (I'm used to being poor now!), and go for it. Earthquakes--Don't sweat the small stuff--After listening a couple of times (first time through I wasn't sold on it) this is the message I get from it. I'm not sure if that's where the band is going but the song takes me there. I Will Hold On--I've loved this song from the first time I heard it on West Coast Live. It can mean a lot to people in different situations. It's a romantic song, yes, but I have a friend recently diagnosed with cancer for whom the line "I'll hold off death so I can live with you" is very meaningful. (This song among others has been copied and sent to him and his wife as a "cheer-up audio card.) Sad Girl--LOVE the piano on this one! Also like the lyric "Depression is romantic when it's a fad girl"--too accurate an account of how some people lightly look at mental illness in today's world. It's "cool" to be on Prozac or something like that) When She Talks--I love this song. Having been married to someone who DIDN'T listen, I like the idea that there is someone out there who DOES. 'Nuf said. Splatter Splatter--Great commentary on some of the hoodoo going on right now re carding for movies etc. In this song Dad is sitting everyone down to watch the movie in the first verse. Subsequent verses do the same thing with other issues. I think this is a much "rock-ier" song than some of the others but if you listen, the point comes across loudly and clearly. If Only you Knew--This is a lovely song--and should remind us of what it must be like to be on the road so much--not only for the band members (whom we would love to see on the road more--but also for people in other professions who are gone so much. I love the sentiment of this song. Enough of song-by-song. By now you know that I tend toward sappy--but I make no apologies. I listen to music for different reasons, and sometimes I like music that really touches my sappier side. Other times I like to listen to classical, jazz (especially piano and sax--Does anyone else like Marion McPartland's piano jazz program on NPR?), light vocals etc. (Last night I went to sleep listening to Andrea Boccelli--what a voice!!) Although I can't dissect the music as some of you can, the things I really like about MF are their musicality, both vocally and instrumentally. Each individual has a beautiful voice, but they blend so beautifully as well. Their harmonies can be so tight and are always "just right." And each of them appears to be versatile on instruments as well. IMHO, everything blends perfectly and that includes their ability as a band to do whatever it takes to make a song come out right. I'm sure this came across to me more after seeing them in person. They just work well together collaboratively, unselfishly. That may or may not be something unique to this band but it impresses the heck out of me. There isn't a song on this album I don't like. Could say more but I'll stop for now. Thanks to the band for a superb album!! *Lois (Fogeyfru) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 16:26:50 GMT From: AngelCL7@aol.com Subject: Re: Conan Are the lads going to be on The Late Late show with Conan? As promised some time ago, directions to the Ram's Head[1] First of all, don't come down 95. It's a waste of time and money. From Wilmington and north: - That being said, take 95 south to Deleware. - Exit at Deleware 1 South, towards Christiana - Follow 1 until you get to US40 - Exit on US40 west[2] - Drive for about 2 miles or so. Sit at al the traffic lights. - Turn left on to Del 896, to Annapolis/Bay Bridge - Follow 896 until it turns into US301 - Follow 301 for about 10 miles until you get into Maryland - In Maryland 301 turns into a divided highway. For the next 40 miles you are going to drive by farms and trees and the occasional critter. - US301 will merge into US50 and you will be on a freeway until you get to Annapolis. - Go over the Kent Narrows. Welcome to Kent Island. - After a few more miles, you will go over the Bay Bridge. Do try and maintain speed, though. - Go over the Severn River (the next bridge) Once you get to Annapolis: - Exit at Exit 29/MD 70/Rowe Blvd, Annapolis. (Not the exit for Bestgate Road.) - Follow Rowe Blvd. over a bridge, through a stop light, past the District Court bldg and stadium (both on the right), through another stop light, and over a second bridge. - Bear to the right immedeately after the bridge onto Calvert Street. If you bump into the State House, you didn't bear right, did you? [3] - At the light, the road bears to the left again. You want to keep going right. (And stay on Calvert.) If you bump into the church, you didn't keep going right, did you? [4] - At the next real light[5] is West Street, and the Ram's Head is just off to the left on the other side of West Street. (It's a bit hard to miss.) - Look for the FrüHeads. PARKING: - You can park on West Street somewhere[6] - There are garages on both sides of Calvert Street as you drive towards West Street. (Only the one on the right is open 24 hours, I think, though. Always read the fine print.) - If you turn around and take Calvert back out to Rowe Blvd, go straight at the light and there are two parking lots. Both are for state employees during the day. After hours, they are open to the public. Coming down 301, you will save $6.50 in tolls and about an extra 90 minutes in travel time round trip.[7] When you go home, there is a $2.50 toll to go back across the Bay Bridge. How long does this miracle trip take, you ask? It takes me almost exactly 2 hours to go from the Painted Bride in Old Phila-something to my doorstep, off of exit 29 on US50. (Keep a watchful eye out for State troopers on 301 in MD, but I usually set my cruise control to about 70ish and enjoy the really quiet trip.) Oh, one last detail.... WXPN usually fades out somewhere on 896 between US40 and the C&D Canal. However, WKHS (90.5) starts coming in right about then. drive safe & see ya on Wednesday. - -- chad at radix dot net [1] for those poor souls coming from Wilmington or the non-existent Phila-something. [2] you can also stay on 1 south to Del 896 or Del 299, but I just take US40. [3] if you bump into the State House, just turn right, and go to Church Circle, and turn right at the second light, West Street, (which will be the first place that you can turn right anyway). The Ram's Head will be on your left. [4] if you bump into Church Circle, just turn right and make your next right onto West Street. The Ram's Head will be on your left. [5] There is a little blinking thing about half-way down Calvert to remind you ingrate drivers of the cross walk there. [6] Be careful not to capture an Annapolis memory and get a ticket [7] If you *insist* on coming down 95, take 95 south to 895 south (Harbor Tunnel) to 97 south to 50 east, then follow the Annapolis instructions above. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 18:54:43 GMT From: vika@fruhead.com (Vika Zafrin) Subject: Re: MOXY FRUVOUS MAKES THE PAPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
