The prize we may really regret offering. 2500 points - Original Mint Condition Früvous Independent Cassette The tape that started it all. Our very first release, with the only version of Green Eggs and Ham you'll ever hear in your home. Still in its original wrapping and containing authentic February 1992 air. Supplies very limited, so act now. 3000 points - Bowling with the band, plus treats Can you resist all those other prizes for a crappy afternoon of bowling with the Früvous guys? Yes, you can. We don't know what 'treats' means yet, but we know that you will be as surprised and pleased as us when you find out. There you have it. Perhaps they'll allow one at some >point in the future, but you really should ask permission first. >- Jason My experience with the tape trading has been mainly with the greatful dead community, so I wrongfully assumed that since Moxy Fruvous allows taping of live shows that they would not object to a tape tree. I obviously would not do anything the band did not want and therefore will not administer any tape trees for Moxy Fruvous shows. In defense of tape trees however, I think that the band is missing a great opportunity. Tape trees tend to get better quality copies of shows into the hands of new fans. New fans are more likely to listen to a good quality tape than one that is of multiple generations. And thus play it for friends, family, and others who might become...new fans. Additionally there will be more quality tapes of older shows many years down the road. Taping of shows, imho, does not decrease the sale of studio albums or concert sales (and can, if anything have the opposite effect by spreading the word). I think that the band must agree with this or they would not allow taping in the first place. The only draw back is if someone feels that they can make a profit from the taping or copying of shows (such as some of the foreign CD bootlegs which are pressed and then sold). Unfortunately, too many artist must litigate to protect their copyrights, whether they allow taping or not. Even the 2for1 (or tape tax as I call it) is an unethical way to trade. This is something that I have seen (although not too often) from Moxy Fruvous traders. Something, imho, which is far worse than a tape tree. Again, I would never do anything the band did not authorize or approve. I am, of course, disappointed as Moxy Fruvous is such a great live band (studio albums great too). I hope that Moxy Fruvous changes their policy and I of course apologize to the band for not first checking into their tape trading policy. erring ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 14:12:58 GMT From: Bridget Subject: Re: Drove downtown in the rain... - --- Katrin wrote: > > Downsizing - Wow, what a sad song. YEAH. that’s exactly how i ‘d want to say that, if i’d ever been able to articulate it.” dave is therefore the recipient of this week’s award, to be known from here on as the Good Hands Award. [when i was a freshman in college, i had a writing prof (well a grad student really) who has gone on to become a real, published writer (david lipsky-- check him out; he rocks). anyway, he likened writing workshops to football or baseball, where you pat each other on the butt and say, “good hands!” for a good play, a good catch, etc. and so was born the expression “Good Hands!” if you wrote a really good piece, or a powerful little image that worked.] dave wins today's Good Hands Award for writing, among other things, lines like “we lived in the noise/and the sweet amber poison” and “who brought the cat? would/margaret atwood?” he can be serious, or silly and nonsensical, but either way the rhyme flows, smooth and effortless. and the words draw a picture in my mind. in honor of the release of Thornhill, i’m going to gush about a new song today-- My Poor Generation. i’ll start by saying that i came to have an online presence about 6 years ago through a newsgroup called alt.society.generation-x. there i figured i’d just find people around my age and with similar interests. this was true, but there was more to it. to my delight, i discovered that there were tons of people who also remembered the Magic Garden, Zips, Banana Splits, the Partridge Family, Schoolhouse Rock, Koogle ;) , Josie and the Pussycats, Double Dutch, Pop Rocks, etc etc etc. it’s a comforting thing to find people who have the same memories that you do, and even more so to find that they’re facing the same issues and problems you are now. my generation, as it were, has taken a lot pity, and a lot of flak, from people who have no idea what we’re thinking. i totally respect dave for taking on this subject, because i think he captured a lot of frustration and made it into a beautiful song. the job market has changed and everything our parents believed about having a satisfying career and a stable family life has gradually become obsolete, it seems. i think that those that came before us can see this, and they look at us and think we’re lost. “Lost in Union Station?” too many choices? “drowned in information?” enough with that. some of us are lost; no more so than the generation before us though. we’re finding our way. “poor little fat cats,” if we complain that the Baby Boomers are sucking up everything we’re putting away for our future, do we come across as whiners? “well maybe we’re just looking in a funhouse mirror and loving our reflection maybe corporate raiders got too greedy in the 80s and bought up all the direction.” in any case, i like the slightly sarcastic tone that runs around in the background of this song. i like the frustration it conveys. i like to think it’s about me, and i like to think that it’s not about me. i like knowing that there are so many people out there who remember Lite Brite and Gnip Gnop.. ;) what i’d change if i could: on the album version -- the rattlesnakey noises in the background (i don’t know the proper names of all those cool shiny things they rub and scratch and shake ;). sometimes i like them there, but much of the time, i just find them distracting and unnecessary. particularly distracting in the verse that begins “airborne with nothing to land on..” there i just want to hear dave’s voice over the guitar. is this song a giant “piss off and leave us alone” to the Boomers? is it a “quit yer whining and get a job,” to disaffected fellow X-ers? is it just a bemused look at how anyone else might see us? me, i hear something different in dave’s tone every time i listen to the song. which is fitting. eh, whatever. peace, ellen *************************************************** Airborne with nothing to land on... The band has authorized tape trees in the past, but are careful with their approval of such an endeavour for very good reasons. It's a matter of creative integrity. For the most part (and, of course, with notable exceptions), the band likes to work the kinks out of new material by playing it live and tweaking it as time goes on and audience reactions vary. Other bands write new songs and record them without ever playing them live. They would just rather not have copies of rough versions of songs being distributed in a systematic fashion. This is my reading of the tape tree issue, at any rate and I can certainly respect it. I consider it to be similar to the way I would feel about people taking rough drafts of stories or poems I've written and distributing them. While I might not mind people reading them, I certainly don't want them officially passed through a structure of people - y'know? The Früvous four are painstaking perfectionists when it comes to their songwriting. That's why it's so good, and that's why they want everything you hear to sound the best it can. They get visibly upset when they don't sound good - you can see it in their faces when they're off-pitch and can't get back or they just aren't *on*. Why when they work so hard night after night to put on a show and fret about every detail would we want to give them the added worry of knowing that several dozen people who weren't there are guaranteed to hear it? And actually, I think the band would know best of anyone which shows are prime for treeing :).
