That isn't the old guard talking like that. It is the sort-of-newish-last-year's-newbies-becoming-new-vetrans guard. The old guard had this discussion in 1997, and has since completely lost interest in it. my words to them: Fruvous is *not* > your band... you do not own them, no matter how many shows you > attend, how much merch you buy nor how much you talk to them. > They are simply a band whose music we all like & who happen to > be genuinely nice guys... and for that we should support them in > whatever move they make. You know, it doesn't matter one whit what people think. One can think of Moxy Fruvous as one's own little band or not, but it doesn't really affect the world. It is the nature of things that people will share Fruvous. That is what makes it fun. If you were to retire to a dark corner to only listen to them with headphones, when nobody was around, I think the allure would rapidly dissipate. And even if one or two people do do that, it doesn't matter. The word will still spread. Whether Fruvous will ever make it BIG (whatever that means) or not is still an open question. It may or may not happen. We (the real old guard) thought for sure that YWGTTM was going to be the breakthrough. Well it got a lot of you all on board, but it wasn't "Stunt" that's for sure. In the interim I've come to realize 2 things: 1. It doesn't matter what I think of Fruvous becoming "BIG." Either they will, or they won't on their own luck and talents. and 2. I don't actually have to have an opinion on this subject. Life will unfold however it does, and I'll find my place in it wherever. It's really not worth all the hand wringing. As long as it is fun, then go ahead and talk. When it is no longer fun, then stop worrying about it. ~\o It's not easy to run when you carry a load, let the questions be done, and follow the road~\o A.J. - -- Mariaweb last updated 5/13/99. I'm even surprised that They Might Be Giants seem to fit in at the 9:30 club. But for a band like Fruvous, where the quality of the sound really matters, a place like the 9:30 club won't cut it. It has terrible acoustics, and I've been in very few places with worse sound systems. I saw them there in February and, honestly, there's something that doesn't sound right when The Drinking Song is blasting through huge speakers right in front of you, and the crowd isn't exactly the quietest in the world... that's just one example... there were other songs where the setup bothered me, too... I wouldn't mind seeing them at Lisner Auditorium, although it is a bit small, and, being an auditorium, might also not be quite the right venue for them. I don't know DC area venues well enough to name any others, but I'm sure there's something else out there that's better. - -- Lawrence Solomon http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~lps/ zaph@tmbg.org "Just because you're floating doesn't mean * This space inadvertently you haven't drowned." -They Might Be Giants * left with stuff in it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 06:47:17 GMT From: nicole.twn.is@ana.ng.at.tmbg.org (Nicole the Wonder Nerd) Subject: Re: SOL on Point Tickets, but . . . :( Sorry to hear of your loss, Katie. Yes, I do feel like a total dork, but for a few hours I'll at least get to be the envy of many of my American friends. That's right; I went to Tower Records at midnight and bought Thornhill. I figured what the heck; I had a lousy day and I'll probably get fired from my temp job tomorrow, so it doesn't much matter how little sleep I get tonight - I needed some cheering up. I'm not a reviewer; reviews usually don't interest me. But here's my sad little excuse for a review anyway, just to have gotten one up here early. Half As Much - I think I'd only heard this once before, and couldn't understand the lyrics well. I think will be one of my several latest theme songs. Sad Girl - Faster, minimalist, very Beatley. Never been one of my favorites live, but the different version *works.* You Can't Be Too Careful - I must note that this is how the title is listed on the CD cover. This song can do no wrong. Still my favorite. IWHO - Also very minimalist. This is exactly the song that I would have given anything to have someone sing to me when I was 17. Earthquakes - People tell me I must have heard this song once. Well, this time I can actually hear *words.* I think this one is really gonna grow on me the more I hear it. When She Talks - Ooh, it's so poppy! Such sweeeeet vocals. Splatter Splatter - Dare I say, this has such a *clean* sound. A fun song; Mike's voice is perfect. I hope I don't get tired of it. Independence Day - Nearly identical to the live versions I've heard, except it no longer makes me want to sing "Hey oh ma ma ma heeeeyyyyyy..." The only song to date that has influenced the way I had a cartoon character dressed. Really. Downsizing - Wow, what a sad song. I'd never heard it before; didn't expect it to be so slow and long. Gonna have to listen to it a few more times to appreciate the full effect. Hate Letter - Made me laugh, which might or might not be the intended effect. Very swingy and loungey. If Only - It means so much to have role models to look up to. "Thanks" doesn't begin to cover it for giving us this song. My Poor Generation - Doesn't immediately speak to me the way it does some people, or the way I always think it should. But Dave's voice is as smooth as ever, and I think this is another one that'll grow on me. And someone asked me not to say whether there's a bonus track or not, so I won't say. And now it's really late, so I suppose I should get some sleep, just in case they actually do want me to keep working at that temp place. k@ - ---- "Oh, *Thorn*hill?
