HA! There was a time when that was the exact definition of THE WEST. (Still is in Radio terms--That is where "K" stations start. In fact that is the dividing line for many things anything that has east and west division tends to divide the US at the Mississippi.) St. Louis is not the "Gateway to the Midwest" is it? It is the "Gateway to the West!" Having said that, I think we can safely allow the likes of Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri (kinda although since it was a slave state it has many things more in common with the South.) to be called Midwestern, but oddly not Montana. I was so happy (on two notes) because the show is at 8pm at night (starting a new job that Monday and they might be rather upset that I want my second day off...now not a problem) and the fact that I got the tixs. Last time I wanted to go to an XPN World Cafe taping (for Rusted Root) I couldn't get through in time and they were sold out. Sorry if I am gloating...but just too happy. Besides, if in fact the boys are only doing a main stage act at Philly Folk Fest, then this makes up for (by far) the absence of a workshop or two. For anyone else going, hope to see you there. Look for the balding guy with a beard (probably in a suit...yuk). OT: On a sadder note: Those who are also fans of the Grateful Dead...it is truly a sad day. On the fourth anniversary of the death of Jerry Garcia I learned that Dick Latvala, of Dick's Picks fame, passed away. If you are a taper or have tapes of any live show (grateful dead or not) it was the historians like Dick who helped keep the memory of a great band alive. I'll never see a Grateful Dead show again, but I can remember the magic when I toss in tape that someone like Dick or another taper kept alive. Thanx to great bands like Moxy Fruvous, who allow taping at a show, and others that do the taping...we can all enjoy the magic of live music again and again. In that honor, if anyone has a really great show of Moxy Fruvous...I would be happy to administer a Tape Tree. Just send me a private e-mail. Additionally, if anyone is interested in a Non-Moxy tape I'll spin one show (blanks and postage) to the first five people who send me a private e-mail saying that they are interested. Check out the date for Saturday, Dec. 11. > > It's in Toronto, NY. Freudian slip? > Well, as a matter of fact it certainly was NOT a typo. you see, back in the summer of '97 Fruvous announced that Rochester should annex Canada, and as is evident by the frequent Fruvous appearances in this corner of NYS, the final details are being worked out. Oh, and in regard to this ongoing argument about "local" shows... just keep in mind that we in Rochester hold the MotherLand of Fruvous... Toronto itself (yes, driving may be a little over 200 mi... but considering the quick little jaunt across the pond??? heh heh heh) So, Rochester holds the Fru-Mecca!!! ahem... and Buffalo, and Fredonia, and Alfred, and Utica, and Syracuse, and Binghamton, and just tickling our borders would be Ottawa and Kingston... heh heh Albany is just outside of our range... but should you be needing our protection, I'm sure something could be worked out. bwahahahahaha ;^} So, Lori... I'll see your Connecticut and raise you Cornell U, Hamilton Co, SUNY Fredonia, Alfred plus the UofR, RIT and SUNY Buffalo. *smirk* 3) re: appearance on Conan: (disclaimer, the opinions expressed here are not necessarily the opinions of the band in question, or anyone other than the babbling author) After careful deliberation I must say that I am extremely excited for these guys. They have been busting their asses for so very long, they had their express rocket to fame in Canada with Bargainville and then fell back to Earth Orbit with Wood (fickle canucks. heehee jk) So, they're taking it slow, building a strong base, developing awesome music... Now is their time and I truly believe that Thornhill will do it for them. I think now more than ever they need the support of this wacky community I'd like to think they would consider a family of sorts. Familiar faces in the crowd, people bringing gifts and carepackages and memories and the like... I'm faily positive they don't want to lose that sense of community and I would bet that plays a lot into apprehension about breaking out of the shell. Perhaps there will come a time when you have to set your phone on redial for TicketBastard and get the chance to see Moxy on a Stadium monitor instead of being so close Mike spits on you during Boo Time or Jian's kick drum nearly blows your eardrum out... but the loyalty and support we show them now will bolster them and give them the strength and optimism to take that final step. Besides, just to play the devil's advocate... just because they appear on Conan doesn't mean that the morning after the show airs record stores across the nation are going to be flooded with people desperate to get a piece of Moxy. I think, even in mainstream, it will take time for the music to set in and take hold. I wish the greatest of success for them, and should they reach a point in their careers when they can no longer do the meet n greets-- or in order to get up close to them you have to win the chance on a local radio station, then I can at least look back fondly on my signed CD's and posters and post cards and listen to my recorded shows and read back on my show reviews (posted and the "director's cuts", if you will) and remember when. My biggest fear is that they guys will think less of me as a FruHead because I won't be able to afford travelling hither and yon to see them at $40 a ticket. I don't think they would... but who says I ever think rationally? ;^} We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion thread, already in progress - --Angie returning to her little corner to sit with her hands folded demurely in her lap.
