She's an incredible CD-burner-type and would never, ever, ever scam anyone out of CD's. She's a great friend, a terrific fruhead-- who has travelled long distances to see our favorite band, and will probably soon be undertaking another, for which I feel slightly responsible. ;) She's also a great person to share fruspace with, as well as playing card games with in line for hours upon hours. (Okay, I don't know how to "snip"!) Marquez is sort of known for writing about quirky characters and unusual relationships. That's one of the reasons he's a little hard to read (I've only read him in Spanish, though, so that might have something to do with it!). I think it's interesting when professors and "professor-types" try to tell us what to --and not to-- read. Of course, they can require reading for the courses that they teach, but for our "free reading" it's a little presumptive. I think they (profs) should be encouraging students (we're talking university level here) to read widely and diversely! I learn so much by reading "outside my comfort zone". And it's a book, for Pete's sake--you can put it down if you don't want to read anymore! Maybe this prof was exercising a little reverse psychology?? I'm pretty sure that he was serious about this, and not trying to make us think the book was "forbidden" or something. He went on and on about how much he really hated the story and the characters. But as I said, now that I've heard/read diametrically opposed opinions of the book from two people whose intellect I respect and admire, I am thinking that I should read it myself, if only to form my own opinion. k@ - ---------------------------------------------------- "When someone says that they can't draw a straight line, it's a comment that belittles the act of drawing. The term "hitting on" has been bandied about a.m.m-f lately, some times by trolls, other times not. "Hitting on" somebody, in my book, is a fairly serious sexual advance, it's not something that's cool in a lot of cases. (Though if the advance were desired, I guess it would be cool.) Say you're at a party, you see a member of the appropriate gender for you who lights your fire, to coin a phrase; you approach this person with at least the thought that the two of you might leave together if all goes well. Flirting is different, much more casual. Some men and women have naturally flirtatious personalities while others affect the behavior to seem more sociable. For instance, you don't expect to go home with the cute waitron, no matter how cute he or she is; you're just having fun, making a few moments of pleasant, possibly memorable conversation. I'm not saying that one behavior is good and the other is evil; but in my mind, at least, there's a distinction. My personal observation of people hanging around after Fruvous shows is that some people are rather flirtatious, charming and affectionate but I've never observed anything I'd characterize as "hitting on." That's not to say it doesn't happen; I'm sure it does. I wouldn't call myself naive, and of course you can all think whatever you want, but I wanted to take a second to draw the distinction. - --Amanda You know me, you just don't know you know me Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
