So psych majors: Does this MEAN anything? Well, I'm not a psych major, but I've had a bit of prior experience with tests like these...and forgive me if I repeat myself a little; I touched on this in an earlier post. One explanation might be that the wording in the online version of the test that most people here are taking (Keirsey Temperament Sorter) is somehow biased to make the NF-friendly answers sound more appealing, so more people are picking them than would on the standard test. The person who devised it, though, is pretty well established and respected in the field, and I doubt he would make that kind of error. Another possibility is that *NFPs are just the kind of people who are likely to like Früvous - and also to like communicating through newsgroups, and to like taking personality tests (I know I enjoy all three). Put those factors together, and you'll get a skewed sample. How many Früheads out there are reading this and have no interest in taking the test or posting to the thread? I'm betting quite a few - 'cause they're not the "type" that's into that kind of thing. I do think that this group (the online Frü-community and the larger fan base in general) attracts a disproportionate number of misfits, oddballs, people who'd consider themselves losers, etc. And I think those labels have a lot (everything?) to do with simply being what I like to call a "personality minority." Among our numbers, unlike the world at large, geekiness is pretty much the norm. We're an incredibly varied crowd in terms of ages, lifestyles, opinions and other interests, but there's definitely a higher-than-average intelligence level here (check out the spelling ability of the average member of any other newsgroup or IRC channel...), as well as just a sense of belonging, a sense of community, of "finally fitting in somewhere." And as I said before, whatever the reason, I think that can only be a good thing. k@ I had a tangent here, but I'll save it for another post ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 10:57:14 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: FRFF? So psych majors: Does this MEAN anything? My tangent... It's a pretty well accepted statistic that extraverts make up about 75% of the population at large, and introverts about 25%. That's why many people mistakenly believe extraversion to be "normal." It's not more normal; just more *common.* I heard once, though - *and a big disclaimer here: I have no idea if this is true! I only have it on hearsay!* - that among Mensa members, the proportions are reversed: 75% introverts and 25% extraverts. Now, the person who told me this was trying to prove that introverts are smarter than extraverts. I think that's not at all the case, though (or if it is, that statistic doesn't do anything to prove it). What that figure shows is that smart introverts are more likely to join groups like Mensa, where they hope to have something in common with the people they meet, whereas smart extraverts would feel less of a need to join a specialized group, because they're more comfortable socializing with a wider range of people. And nothing's wrong with either way. k@ Meet Every Nerd Still Alive ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 13:26:57 -0400 From: "Gramcracker" Subject: tape of FRFF show? who should i get in touch with about getting a tape of the FRFF show for a friend of mine who couldn't be there? smoochies, meghan - -- - ---- ICQ# 17903747 http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/4448 ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #631 ********************************************
