For me, the reason I recommend Live Noise to people is because it is the closest the released albums come to a live Moxy Fruvous show and if I had my druthers everyone on this earth will have experienced one live Fruvous show just to give them a chance and we'd see how amazingly popular they'd be then (though the swahili speakers may be a bit confused). Live Noise is the best I can usually do and it does give a good idea of what a live show would be like (including the choice expletives, semi-inside joke songs, and witty banter). > I would never give a fruvirgin LN, because > 1) they might be turned off by the expletives, If this is a problem with the other person, I'd agree that maybe Live Noise isn't the best first album. But I'd be scared to take them to an actual live show as well *grin* > 2) they would never "get" the banter Is there really that much to get? Some guys arguing over whether the outcome to Karparov vs. Deep Blue means the end of society as we know it. A nice little chit chat about whether Moxy Fruvous would be a good date band. An impromptu song about the Lowest Highest Point in the United States. I dunno. To me there is nothing to get. It's just good humor to me and of course my good humor could be the next guy's lewd crude dumb joke (Oscar the Grouch coming out of his can...). But if the other person is a "Quit talking and play some music" type, then again, maybe Live Noise isn't the right intro disc. But the live show is full of intra-band entertainment that usually entertains outside the band as well. > and 3) they wouldn't understand Boo Time and KoS Cranky > Monarch b/c they'd never heard the original versions. The Live Noise Boo Time is easier on the ear to me than the original version and I'm gonna guess hearing the Moon version isn't gonna give anyone a leg up on the live version for any reason. Why do you think that? And Grunge of Spain, I guess maybe I can see your point. If someone doesn't know that King of Spain is THE Moxy Fruvous song to many many people, they may not get the Rock Lampoon that Grunge of Spain is. But even if they aren't gonna get it, it's a good listen. > The CD can > be quite a mouthful/earful, whatever, and I'd be afraid to scare the > fruvirgin. For some, I guess that can be true. The magic of Fruvous is whereever someone finds it. For many it is in the live show and Live Noise attempts to bring that into their living rooms. For others it may be the deep music of Wood and maybe those people don't go see live shows and love Moxy Fruvous all the same. I guess that leaves the responsibility up to us to know our local Fruvirgins and serve up what Fruvous brings to them and see what happens *grin* - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 23:58:08 GMT From: Angie Subject: Re: Setlist Ponderings, etc. twas spoke by ellen: off Thornhill and the next time fruvous plays your town, their show sells out instantly. you know about the show before most of the people who only know that one radio hit-- do you dally over getting tickets, thinking, "oh well, if i don't get tix, someone new will get to see them instead.."? no, of course you don't. and there's nothing unfair about it. - -- Hey! story of my recent life. By all means look into temp work. Temp agencies do test your clerical skills - typing, spelling, simple math, etc. - but the tests are PAINFULLY EASY. I have to wonder what kind of people they get applying for jobs, who can't handle these tests (and then I go out on temp assignments and see for myself what kind of people are temping along with me...). And a temp agency is pretty much guaranteed to hire you - if you don't have a lot of skills or experience, you might not get sent out on the most exciting assignments, but they *will* find work for you, and you always have the choice to accept an assignment or turn it down. And then if you don't like a place once you're there, you can always ask the temp agency to find you something different. Much less commitment than a "real" job. Seriously. You're *here*, so obviously you can type and probably know your way around a computer better than most of those workers. Seriously. Anything, even clerical work, is less soul-sucking than fast food. k@ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 01:11:43 GMT From: "Jennifer Schlosser" Subject: Re: OT: GBS Turn (was:Re: mom's "these guys" comments) Cameron Ross said.... > > [1] Q: What is worse than a woman's curse? I've been a fan for just over 4 years but have never seen a show live except for the one that is on FDC. There are two reasons for this 1. I live in backwoods northren Alberta and the closest concert was 680 kilometers away. 2. I don't have a driver's licence to take me to it!! I hope to go to the concert in Edmonton on October 2nd but I probably can't. Anyhow when I went on a school trip to Toronto this easter I made a point of stopping at the Queen and Bay and there was an organ grinder there!! I even took a picture of him but the stupid photo developers ruined my film (note: boycott Shopper's Drug Mart). I also started thinking that the word Fruvous in itself sound almost like a latin species so you could use it like: The dance you do to King of Spain when no one is looking: fruvous moveious. First of all if you dislike a radio station's format then you probably aren't going to listen to it, therefore you will probably never actually *hear* that intro. I know that while I have a much better chance of hearing Fruvous (live and recorded) on MIX 99.9 I'm not going to waste my time listening to it. I'm not tuned into CBC FM in the afternoons either. I have my own favourite station and I'm not going to wade through stuff I don't like on the off chance that Fruvous will be played or will stop by the station. Secondly, let me step in and defend top 40. Not dance stations who claim to be top 40, proper top 40. The top 40 which recieved a fatal blow in Toronto when 680 AM went all news when I was in grade 11 or 12 and which died about a year and a half later when 640 (which wasn't as good but was semi-decent) went all talk. The top 40 which is *FINALLY* praise-all-good-things back as of this past March in the form of KISS 92.5. They don't have anything by name Moxy Fruvous on KISS right now. I'm making myself personally responsible for changing that, because KISS is what I listen to and I want to hear Fruvous on the radio. Therefore I'm going to make KISS *play* Fruvous on the radio. That's one of the advantages of the format - they rely heavily on listener feedback. What will it sound like when they intro the songs? "In the next hour, Will Smith, Shania Twain, the Backstreet Boys, Smash Mouth, and, coming up next the new one from Moxy Fruvous." Unike Much Music the DJs at KISS are seldom dumb enough to put Britney, Ricky, N'SYNC, and BSB one after another - that's pretty much one flavour of music for a good 15 minutes or so. Everything on top 40 is pop, sure, and it's pop that sells, but a *good* top 40 station will play a wide variety of pop. On top of that there are things like the nightly showdown and the lunchtime "KISS it or Dis it" where listeners get to vote for new songs - songs by people the listeners may not even heard of before. Anyone who listened to 680 in the old days remembers hearing Stuck in the 90's alongside stuff from Wilson Phillips and Kish. It's happened before and I hope it will happen again. As for BNL.. well that's another thread, but they've been on top 40 stations since Gordon came out. (Up here anyway) I actually thought Born on a Pirate Ship was a more accessible album than Stunt.. but One Week, a decent song, extremely catchy, with a great hook, made the US public sit up and take notice. Früvous could do the same with something like Too Careful or Half As Much. It's the *first* single that reels them in and (re)establishes the name "Fruvous", enough that by virtue of the name, the next single or two gets good airplay, and changes what's seen as "hip" music for a few months. I'm not saying that degree of popularity would last all that long.. a year or two, probably, like last time, but the guys deserve the acclaim and should have the opportunity to say "no" to MTV or whatever they don't want to do instead of saying "we're not an MTV band", and have it not matter because MTV wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole *anyway*. [1] Fiona My favourite bands? Früvous, Robbie Williams, BSB, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Alanis, BNL, Savage Garden, Wilson Phillips, the Neilds, All Saints, SIR, Andrea Florian, the EarthTONES, Take That, Hanson. [1]That was not a slight against the guys, it was against MTV and, coming from my point of view, it's currently a fact. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 01:21:02 GMT From: "Cara (Laika) Kozack" Subject: Re: Hi You all!
