The Sad Today thing, I assume (and hope) is supposed to sound like that-- not out of tune, but just, shall I say, different. It's my impression that the lads are very tight and aware of each other's parts, because if they go out of tune live, they adjust quickly enough. Live Noise was/is distributed by BMG. If a record can't order something from BMG distribution when you ask them too, they aren't much of a record store at all. US Wood and "b" may also be distributed by BMG. If so, those should not be a problem ordering anywhere in any record store in the country. Don't be afraid to ask a chain to order some CDs. I for one love Jian's storytelling songs like Follow the Road and Downsizing to no end. They are hands down my favorite Jian songs. But I know that's a personal opinion through and through. Most people really identify with the relationshippy Jian songs more. That's ok. All the songs are good songs, even When She Talks *grin* My opinion on Follow the Road probably getting nixed from new album consideration quickly: It's a lot like Downsizing in it's stylings and voicings. It's a Jian song the last I heard it. It's not a Fruvous song. They could have tried to make it into a Fruvous song, I don't know. Maybe it'll show back up later (which I really hope it does because when I first saw it live it eclipsed my now favorite Fruvous - My Poor Generation). My Poor Generation moved from Dave song to Fruvous song. If Only You Knew went from Fordy song to Fruvous song (though some thing it lost something some thing it gained). But When She Talks seems more of a Fruvous song. Maybe it's because I've heard it with the backing vocals and the keyboard and bass parts since the beginning. But it seems much more of a group song where Follow the Road is folky acoustic tale song. That's my take on it. I don't criticize the new album so far. Has anyone > actually acquired a job legitimately thru interview? > or is everyone's aquisition of a job due to nepotism? Well, I'm sure most of us oldsters have acquired at least *some* jobs "legitimately," - in fact, I think *I* have, though it's been so long...I'm feeling rather unemployable myself these days, having been in school for a year or so and not working. Your post got me thinking about the various ways I've managed to find employment in the past... Nepotism: Works best if you're in the same town as your influential relatives, which I'm not anymore. My mom got me most of my early jobs: Working at a tourist-info booth in Grand Forks, ND (that is, answering the question, "Hoo d'ya get to that Columbia Moll, eh?" all day long); waitressing (and getting horribly harrassed by the kitchen staff) at the hotel where she was sales manager; calling customers for photocopier meter readings when Mom worked at an office-machines dealership. Having a psychic friend: I always told my old classmate Tonja she was psychic. I hadn't talked to her in years, and one day she called me up out of the blue and said a local t-shirt shop (part-owned by her cousin) needed an assistant artist, and she'd given them my name. She had no idea that I was looking for a job, or that it had been my dream to work at that shop ever since it opened. That was a great job too. Being a psychic friend: Okay, the header here should really be "answering a newspaper ad." I don't know how it is in other places, but Denver is (or was in the early 90s) rife with two-bit phone-psychic operations. If you know how to read Tarot cards (and anyone can learn; it's nothing special - but yes, those people do really have cards. They're not "reading from a script.") you can get a job doing this. However, the 900- line business is notoriously corrupt, and owners will bend over backwards to screw the workers out of their paychecks and sometimes even their jobs. And of course it is a ripoff to those poor suckers who call. I don't recommend this line of work if you want to keep your sanity. Temp and temp-to-permanent: After having an actual legitimate, respectable career as a production artist for a couple of years, I got downsized and embarked on my 96-97 Year In Job Hell (ask me later; it's another post). What finally pulled me out of that was landing a temp assignment at a high-powered financial company. Here's a little secret: It's *really easy,* when you're low on the company totem pole, to be the smartest one in your department - and so they decided to hire me full time. I stayed there about a year until I realized I was doing the exact opposite of the kind of work I really liked to do. Which brings us up to my present jobless-bum state of being a full-time student, racking up scads of loans and being supported by my devoted and hard-working spouse. Reality's gonna bite me in the ass sooner than later, and I'll once again have to remember how to find employment. I sure hope it's easier with a degree. k@ Meanwhile, the mantra: Cartooning is a hobby. It does not pay money. Cartoonists do not make a decent living. Stay in school and get a degree and find a real job that is less fun than cartooning, if you want to support your cartooning habit. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 18:00:00 GMT From: Kate Leahy Subject: OT: How Many Guys are Deceptively Small (was: something about merchandise) You'd be *amazed* at the small clothes that some guys can fit into. We couldn't believe the small sizes they could get themselves into. Often, the only girls with available uniforms were tiny cheerleaders and track runners who were dressed in their athletic uniforms *for* the rallies.
