The first time I saw Fruvous (whom I knew so much about at that point that I was still calling them "Fruvious"), they performed the long GE&H. I was blown away. The entire night was amazing, but my friends and I couldn't stop talking about GE&H for weeks. I'd say that's a pretty good indication of the power of the song, live. Of course, I was new to the group then. > One thing I've noticed about Fruvous when they pull out songs they don't > really perform any more, the songs can sound a little tired, as if they > don't quite know what to do with them. Really? I've never felt that way. "Bittersweet" has been *electric* both times I've been lucky enough to see it performed. Both nights at the recent Ark shows we were treated to live rarities from Wood, and "Down From Above" and "Nuits de Rêve" have never sounded better. I just recently got copies of the Noho Halloween shows (thanks, Bridget!!), and those shows are chock full of rare treats that, with one or two exceptions, are so high-energy that I'm more upset at missing the shows *now* than I was when I first read the reviews - -- and I was plenty jealous of those in attendance back at the beginning of last November :-) > What does that mean? Should Fruvous shake-up its setlists more often? Er, Josh, care to chime in with the statistics thread again? I agree with Amy on this one -- Fruvous "shakes up" the setlists an amazing amount. I don't think I've ever heard of two exactly same sets, even among the recent festival touring, where the band is trying to do a (much shortened) "greatest hits" type show to snag new fans. Looking at a few recent shows: At the Ark, Fruvous performed a grand total of 19 songs the first night, and 23 the second. Of those, the three "banjo set" songs were played both nights, as was Darlington, and IWHO (kinda -- Jian played it solo the first night, and the full band played it the second night). That's five repeated songs, meaning they played 37 different songs (38 if you count the different IWHOs) in two nights. I know of only a handful of other bands that can claim that kind of non-repetition from *any* two shows, let alone two consecutive shows. > Anybody care to discuss justifications for keeping King in the show on a > night-after-night basis? It's a crowd pleaser, but Fruvous has a lot of > crowd pleasers. Well, KoS doesn't seem to be as much of a standard in the set in the last month or so as it has been in the past. Heck, the lads even did a Toronto show without playing their biggest "hit". And justification for them to play it at all? After the Fort Erie show, Jian said something along the lines of "I read people complaining about us over-playing this song or that song; they don't seem to realize that these are songs we *enjoy* playing." (muchly paraphrased). He was talking specifically about Michigan Militia, if I remember correctly, but the point remains the same -- not only is there a reason to keep it because it's a huge crowd pleaser, but the band just might really like to play it. > Are they keeping themselves in the "great harmonies, funny-ha-ha songs" > box for a reason? I think you don't need to look much further than Thornhill for the answer to this -- gone are all of the "funny ha-ha songs" (to my personal disappointment), and even some of the "great harmonies" (re: IWHO) got excised. In fact, Pisco seems to be the only really "funny ha-ha" song that's even been added since YWGTTM came out, in my poor memory at least. They'll continue to play older songs, because the fans keep coming to see them. However, with Fruvous it really seems to have gotten to the point that it's almost easier to guess which "rarities" they'll play than which "standards" :-) This isn't at all meant as a flame, Amanda, and I apologize if my tone got a bit harsh -- but while I think there're a few really valid reasons to criticize Fruvous (When She Talks is on the album and Follow The Road isn't??), I just can't see "repetitive setlists" as one of them. -Joe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 02:56:29 GMT From: Mjgreenb@aol.com Subject: Re: A little treat for the pun-lovers! =) > >Did you ever wonder what it must be like to work in a profession > >that is the butt of so many jokes and/or receives so much abuse? She always complains that they sing out of tune, and yesterday she finally lost it and said something like, "You know, I think they made a pact when they formed the band: 'Let's make a band and never sing in tune, and I bet we'll still get people to buy our music! Even musicians! HA HA HA HA!'" She said this in the middle of Sad Today, so maybe I can forgive her. But I was just curious to see if anyone else has had or heard a similar reaction.
