Any ideas? This depends on your specific definition of "help". 1) Buying CDs at a record store generates interest in the band. (If X people buy a particular CD or group, the store management notices. X is smaller than you think.) This is help, even if the store does take a large chunk. 2) Buying CDs from the band itself does indeed deliver the largest chunk o'change into Fruvous pockets. But nobody notices your interest in Fruvous except you and Fruvous. 3) Buying CDs at a concert probably helps convince venue management that Fruvous is worth their while (or, if they were the opening band, that there's a large enough fanbase in the area to support a headlining gig). So... take your pick! There's no easy answer to your question because there's no way to give dollar amounts for stuff like "interest", "exposure", or "favourable impression". Probably the only way you could purchase Thornhill and NOT help the band an iota is by buying it used. - --nicole twn *** "I'm going down to where my angels live..."--Peter Mulvey Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn Reply-to address is INCORRECT! Now I'm going to quote Tobey. When we were hanging around Tobey's table after the instore at Borders in Ann Arbor in January, this issue came up in some form or other and Dave Tobey uttered Words of Wisdom that sounded something like this: "Don't buy them from us. We already know they're popular." From this and all the "breakthrough" talk I believe that Früvous would like to get the exposure of actually tackling a sales chart. Now, if you're one of those who really objects to the idea of Fruvous "making it big", maybe you won't want to buy from your local HMV or whatever, but personally, I'm going to bug the main store on Yonge again on my way home. One other point of consideration: Although we all assume that all profits from sales at shows go directly to the band, that isn't necessarily true. A large amount of venues insist on receiving a percentage of merch sales from the show. (How much of a percentage depends on whether the band sells the product, or if the venue needs to staff the table on their behalf, etc.) Therefore, the net amount of money that goes directly to the artist may not be drastically different than if you bought it in a store, and it isn't tracked for charting purposes. Buy it from a store. An album never made it on Billboard's top 100 by being sold by individuals. Regardless of where you decide to shop, don't forget to buy early, and buy often! :-) Cookie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jul 1999 15:17:46 GMT From: trace@frumail.org (Trace) Subject: Re: *itinerary* On Thu, 15 Jul 1999 17:51:44 GMT, Jacey7@aol.com wrote: > >>>Tues Aug 10 Rochester, NY Record Archive - special acoustic instore >Tues Aug 10 Rochester, NY Milestones - WBER fundraiser with Sarah >Slean >Fri Aug 13 New York, NY Sam Goody 'outstore' - South St. Seaport >Sat Aug 14 Northampton, MA Northampton Folk Festival >Mon Aug 16 Ocean City, NJ Ocean City Music Pier >Tues Aug 17 Philadelphia, PA WXPN - co-host morning show >Tues Aug 17 Bryn Mawr, PA The Point - live taping of the World Cafe<< > >OK, so how tempted am I to just take that whole week off of work and >put lots and lots of miles on my car?? ;-) It gets crazier if you add a few non-fruvous dates in there.
