I listened to Thornhill about 10 times today, and I really like it. I think upon listening to it, you have to treat it as a pop record, rather than a traditionally eclectic Früvous release, because it is different...call it a concept album, but I'll definitely say it is well put together--reminiscent of the Tragically Hip and Squeeze, and great production. The album mix of "Splatter Splatter" sounds frightfully like "Video Bargainville"...At WBER, we're still trying to determine a focus track, and that song is a very good candidate. I will admit that I'm a bit disappointed because so many of the new songs were shelved and not included on the new record, but I'm still satisfied with the outcome. (i know the question, "who is that?") i was pretty jazzed when i found this out, but did not want to gush about this omline. the guy is just amazing! he is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with an incredibly soulful voice. if you can find it, his cover of "when a man loves a woman," crushes micheal bolton's like a grape, and gives the original percy sledge's take a serious run for the money.) his own solo work is mostly out of print, sadly. three releases were on the doomed enigma label, and two were on the restless. he helped produce and engineer rem's first two albums, _murmur_ and _reckoning_, along with mitch easter. he also produced the smithereens' full-length debut, _especially for you_, and the sophomore effort, _green thoughts_. he has produced his wife, marti jones, on a number of recordings, as well. (i can't remeber if her albums are in print or not.) he has produced others as well, too numerous or obscure to list. he is a down-to-earth producer. the bands' work sounds like their own, not as seen through somebody else's eyes. he tends to know when (and what) to add or subtract from the mix. _thornhill_ should really benefit from this collaboration. it would be cool if this were _the_ album to do it. i really do apologize for gushing like this. when i asked jian about their choice of prodocer, he was genuinely impressed with the work they did together. (it was the same energy that is shared in this post.) he was excited with the man, as well as the production, too. i always feel stupid when saying anything other than, "great show, guys!" so, i was pleasantly surprised by jian's sincere response to my inquiry. (thanks, jian!) (thanks also go to dave for sharing the story about "the angels rejoiced." that song just struck me between the eyes when he played it as one of the openers at the tuesday ark show in ann arbor. i could not get the song out of my head for the next week!) right ... so, now i'm babbling like an overflowing brook! before i shut up, let me add that murray's a great guy!
