Now I missed the human dumbek, was nowhere near the funny-sounding bubble wands, etc etc, but the *best* 2 things about those nights at Lee's were a)The crowd of us at Stage Murray who kept yelling Hi at basically everyone. "1.. 2.. 3.. HI CAL!" "Look it's Angie!" "1.. 2.. 3.." "HI ANGIE" Y'know I hadn't met Angie yet? I just knew from her description that *that* was Angie, and *I* was about to meet her. What better reason to yell hi? b) the uh.. 15 people on 4 chairs picture. (Is it on FDC?) I will add a "me too" to the list of people saying it takes a little time to really feel a part of this community. It was well over a year between the first time I posted and the first time I stopped feeling like someone was going to figure out I didn't belong here. Basically, just don't be afraid to listen to the conversations around you at shows and add your .02 when you feel it's appropriate. If you've posted more than once or twice, be sure that *someone* remembers you and will suddenly burst out with "oh HI!" when they figure out it's you. (That reminds me... kirsten was that you talking to Jian about how you'd become a fan in one day and he thought you meant Ft Erie was your first show? I was *going* to do the "Hi!" thing, except well.. I didn't want to interrupt your conversation with more proof of how insane I really am.) Things like.. well simple things like the birthday cake we had at Ft Erie for Chrissy, Jian and Murray can seem exclusive. Frankly there's only so much cake that goes around! *g* But it's just different people's ways of expressing their friendship. If you knew Chrissy you'd know that a) she deserves cake once in a while b) she was probably deadly embarrassed (although I haven't gotten any death threats *yet*) On the negative side, we have heard a couple of posts lately about... I dunno... fans who think they're closer to the band than the rest of us, or deserve special treatment. Y'know what? Some of them are probably reading the ng right now. I don't think I'd accuse anyone who posts regularly to ammf of that kind of behaviour.. (I mean, I'm jealous of that drum ChrisO got at FruConII but hey, it's not his *fault* he gets singled out and he's certainly not a prima donna about it. He's really great about things like sneaking out of the room without waking others up when he needs to leave early ;) <--- Pte-Claire Dec '98 reference.> A place with this much history has a ton of injokes, like the Cchhaadd thread back in September, or comments like cee's hair being a landmark, and sometimes yeah, I see someone asking a question and don't feel like explaining. Best advice for those? Ask someone when you're at a show - storytelling kills time when you're hanging around. Or pop onto IRC during one of those mysterious times when there are 20 people online and NOONE's talking. (IRC has its own group of injokes as well, and we're a little better at explaining those) And if you hang around long enough, you'll find yourself in the middle of some injoke, or hell, even an injoke yourself. (It took Lori what.. 2 months? to get the Homicidal Flamingo title) So hang in there, be patient with us. If you managed to put your foot in it when you first posted, well first impressions last a while, but eventually you'll get the hang of it and win most of us over. Fiona *finally* back to posting regularly. So it appears .... that the "average" Frühead is a former music major named Chris, who works with computers. - Shawn Harkness March 7 '98 (The 'are you a hippie or a geek?' thread, probably the last time we did anything like the AMMF Profile.
