Somewhere around Syracuse today, Steve and I, discussing the topic of Früvous covers and Früvous songs in general, came up with the idea of having them switch leads on songs, maybe play a different tempo, see what happens. Kind of a Grunge of Spain approach. Dave swings through Minnie. Jian leads on Moon. Mike croons a truly sinister I Will Hold On. If Lawrence and I are not mistaken, "these kids" actually pay handsomely for the privilege ... it's like an internship, or a tour of duty as a Miss America contestant, or something. This troupe came to my high school once, way back in the dark ages, and they scared me then. They scared me even more Saturday night. It was like watching the cast from Barney all growed up. eeeek! Our flock of Früheads was so stupefied by their grand spectacle that when, at the end of the show, performers were introduced by nationality, we neglected to wave to the Chileans and holler "welcome, Gabby!" Probably a good thing, since we were already getting Looks from some of the rest of the Family Night crowd for joining in on the dancing and singing during the Village People tunes. (Not everyone's used to tractable Früheads, I guess.) re the Cash Cards, they were a neat idea, but they did impede common sense. Post-show, when the card-reloading booths had closed, numerous Früheads on the brink of heat prostration had to argue long and hard with the persons manning the bar area in order to purchase WATER with COLD HARD LOONIES instead of these things. We finally made it obvious we weren't giving up, we really were in need of rehydration, and they'd have ambos on the premises if they didn't give in -- but these guys were sincerely concerned that they wouldn't be allowed to be vendors again next year if someone found out that they BROKE THE RULES by accepting cash instead of these cards. Good God. I felt like some streetcorner heavy, putting the pressure on this guy to cough up the goods.
