Er, that is, "yet again" as compared to other shows in general. I've never seen them in Fort Erie before. :) I'm not going to go into detail about the openers, because, frankly, I paid little attention to them. (I was just trying to get organized and find people :) So finally, after lots of setup, lots of testing, Fruvous came out around 10:40 (not bad, as they were scheduled for 10:30) and started with Half as Much, which I had predicted as Laika, but quickly assumed they had reversed the "usual" order for some reason. Dave broke a string, though, and had to get it fixed for Laika, so they played a song which I didn't recognize, but was very good. A Tom Waits song other than Jockey, I think. :) Tobey returned with the electric guitar and they played Laika, and then talked for a little while about the area and people and mentioned Lazlo, which made me hopeful for a moment that I might get to hear a Song I Haven't Heard In Concert Before [tm], but of course, just because they mention his name doesn't mean they have to play the song named for him. Instead they played Horseshoes, with audience participation. Next came Independence Day, appropriate for the date of the show. Well executed, and a better mix than usual - I could actually understand all the words. :) Short intro to I Love My Boss, which was entertaining, and then while still in a capella mode, You Will Go to the Moon, with an intro that I can't exactly remember. They then announced that they were going to do "a couple of new songs off the new album." (or something to that effect, implying definitely more than 1) and played I Will Hold On (beautiful) and then Dave disappeared and Mike took his place behind the congas. Weird. I could have sworn King of Spain was an *old* song and won't be on Thornhill. :) Lots of stuff in the King intro that I can't remember... something that caused Dave to sing "Oh, my unspeakable wife, Phil Donahue." Later in the song, "King, how are you such a Sabre?" "I'm playing the congas!" then, much to my surprise and enjoyment, BJ Don't Cry, which I hadn't heard since last August. An excellent rendition, with a very... odd... third verse. I heard bits of stuff in there, but I'm not sure if Mike was just trying to be silly or the megaphone wasn't working... either way, it was cool, but I forget what the improv in the last verse was. Splatter Splatter next, accordion and semi-acoustic guitar. It's a really nice arrangement, although I did like the piano... (strange, as I'm one of those "more accordion!!!" people :) Boo Time, with some Buffalo references, and "Smokin' a little boo with the Fruvous crew..." for the repeat. I forget the intro to it, but I think they went off on a few tangents before The Present Tense Tureen, and Dave started playing it over the talking and eventually they just started the song. Lori continued to taunt me about my Frulibs silliness where I came up with "That's not a tureen, it's a tureen" by trying to use Fruvous words. :) Johnny Saucep'n next, and I'm almost getting this in one breath... not quite yet, though. There were some people in the front with a huge sign that said "Johnny Saucep'n!" Then Fly, which I also hadn't heard in a while, but was glad to hear again. I forget the intro exactly, but it was a little (a lot?) more humorous than I usually hear for a song like Fly. The mood changed quickly, though, when they started playing. Then, surprise, Authors. Middle of the set. Well, not the middle, but also not the start of an encore, either. No mention of Mario Puzo other than the usual - not even after the song - after it they just went right into Get in the Car, then Psycho Killer, with the "quiet" intro. They came back with Michigan Militia. Unlike in Baltimore, where the bass dominated the mix and the banjo was mostly inaudible, it was reversed. Even Murray's solo couldn't be heard. (well, I watched him and heard it in my mind :) Then they introduced Lou Reed and did Dancing Queen to end the first encore. Second encore was the Drinking Song, but there were a lot of technical problems during it - possibly a loose cable or something - but the guitar kept cutting out. The audience sang pretty well. Other notes: someone in the front was spraying water (from a hose) at the audience. it's nice to keep people cool, but it's kind of annoying for us glasses wearing people. it had gotten pretty cool towards the end anyway, but they kept doing it. some large group of people had a giant stuffed head of something, which they insisted on passing up to the stage. It was accepted, discussed briefly, and then ignored for the rest of the set. There were some comments made about it being "Family night" using all the words you'd least expect to hear at "Family night" but more making fun of the kids who wouldn't like Moxy Fruvous because they don't have weird tatoos in weird places. there seemed to be more mixing difficulties at this show than others. some of the levels just didn't seem right at times. people... I met so many people, and I haven't slept in 24 hours... so I don't want to try listing them because I'll invariably forget someone... um, yeah. I'll see most of you here and on irc. yikes, there were a lot of us there. :) money... I now have more incentive to go to Toronto next week... As far as my personal opinion, the It's Too Cold story sounds too non-outrageous to be frulies. The part about commenting on the music bed fits too well with what y'all have transcribed as what they are saying at the beginning of the track. I think they may have been seriously answering the question and then maybe realised that they'd seriously answered the question, and so then came up with the dave's daughter thing (which is much more in line with the type of answers they usually give) to balance it out. So I tend to believe the religious tape story. Dave's daughter? Well did you all know that the the name Moxy Fruvous comes from a hog-calling contest...? Erie = 90 --> 190 --> Bridge - --Follow signs. :) The show was incredibly energetic last night. (I'm weak, Lawrence... I slept!) In fact, Mike and Jian both seemed to be to be on some kind of rush... whether it was sugar-related and whether that has anything to do with any confectioners here on the ng, I cannot say. :) There were quite a few tech/sound problems, quiet bass, losing the guitar sound, broken strings, etc--but hey, that's what you get when you play outside. Besides, because of a broken string on the electric guitar, we got to hear "Walking Spanish" which was just incredible! How one decides to "fill" with Tom Waits, I do not know--but it's certainly part of the magic of Fruvous. So, something I noticed at Baltimore and was repeated here... there was this group of fans who I can't help but describe as "jock"-y, tearing it up. I don't know if these are "new" fruvous fans (although I know the batch in Baltimore could certainly sing along!) or just an "East Coast" group that I haven't experienced in my "Mostly-Midwestern" world, where the typical frufan is artsyfartsy. :) Anyway, this particular group of "jock-like" fans had a huge stuffed animal (wonder where they got it!) and repeatedly chanted "monkey" about it. I thought it was a parrot, which I think Jian also perceived. Eventually they were fulfilled by Jian's "Well, throw it up here, then" and some banter about it, which led to Murray's line of the night. Murray's line of the night: "It's name is 'Monkey', I guess. Who's the Shakespeare who came up with that?" To borrow a format of Bridget's, I'll sum up with a "Best of" list. :) Best Ensemble: Dave. He looked like he was in pajamas. :) On closer inspection, he was simply wearing a large "Fleadh" T-shirt, and baggy white pants, but he totally looked ready for bed. Add to that the large-sunglasses he kept on the entire performance, and he was one laid-back guy. :) Best Crowd Noise Diffuser: Mike. Even after the monkey was on stage, the chanters were chanting 'Monkey.' And Mike replied "I know you're chanting for Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch again, but they're not comin' out here until that moshing stops!" I don't know if there was any actual moshing going on, and I don't care, it was still funny. Best Riot Avoider: Jian. After some dangerous banter regarding Hockey, Jian agreed that it was "no goal" and made some comments that relaxed a heavily-Buffalo-laden crowd. Best line in KOS: Mike. "I play the congas!" Best place to stand at the festival: On a box with Mindy (and her brother, and her friends), stage Murray. Despite our diminutive statures, we got to *see*! And I only almost fell off the box twice. :) Best "toy" at the festival: Lori's "Pisco" um... Hat? :) Hours of fun for children of all ages! Best Cake: Cake provided by a number of fruheads for Chrissy, Jian, and Murray, with a nice picture of the guys on it! Wonderful! Darn good cake, outside and in. :) Best non-fruvous related line o' the night (/morning): Joe, after my fretting for hours about hitting Cleveland-highway-rush hour traffic, "You're not going to hit rush hour. It's Sunday, and it's the Fourth of July. Nobody's going to be up!" :) Happy Independence Day!
