No advance tix required, though you can purchase your button at a participating bank (BankBoston participates, don't know about others) for $3. Festivities go from 11am to 9pm. "obvious note" before I start, I really like Uncle Bonsai, Barenaked Ladies, Moxy Fruvous, They Might Be Giants, The Bobs and a hundred other bands. Not to suck up *too* much , but I really admire the way Andrew Ratshin supports other bands - - see his website at www.yellowtailrecords.com - he's putting his money when his interests are by *manufacturing* CDs for other artists. And of course, he's reading this board, which means he must kinda like/support Moxy, and that's cool.) My point was poorly said, and I was overreaching, but here was the gist: it's hard to have a popular song, but there seems to be a few easy ways to get your songs out into the public. Write a song about your penis, about Monica Lewinsky/Bill Clinton, about Viagra/Bob Dole, about eating glue as a child, about condoms, about masturbation, about Starbucks, about Jar Jar Binks, about gay Teletubbies, or about any other target done to death by Jay Leno. Your song might get played on the radio. Or people will make mix tapes and send them to their friends. You'll probably get requests for them long after the topic is topical and you grit your teeth when you sing the song. So, do you play the song for your fans? Or do you refuse to play the song? <<1. They both have dumb band names that were probably funny at one time>> > >Uh....all right...you might have a point with this one. I could argue and say >that the name Uncle Bonsai was NEVER funny but that certainly wouldn't help. I've always wondered about this. When you named the band "Uncle Bonsai", I thought it was kind of like naming a band "Toad the Wet Sprocket". What were other potential names? Were you rushed into picking a name? Do you think the name "Electric Bonsai Band" has limited your exposure? I once saw you filed under trash/hardcore as a Japanese Noise band like the Boredoms. <<2. Both are far too chummy with geeky fans in the crowd>> >I'm not sure....are you insulting ME for being too chummy or are you insulting >my fans for being too geeky? And how does one define geeky? Is it that they pay >for my CDs with Star Trek checks? Is that they can pull out one of my lesser >lyrics ("leaping and lurching...etc." -- I guess I won't be putting THAT song >on the new live CD) to try and make an argument? And what's wrong with being >chummy? I mean, I'm in a strange town with nothing to do, once the show is >done. All around me are people who either think like me, like what I do, or, at >least, will buy me a drink. I make my living trying to entertain these people; >there's the added goal of trying to get them to buy my recordings...should I >ignore them? Lastly, my geeky friend (yes, I've seen your web site...computer >this, programming that, science fair this, technical journals that...links so >geeky and unselfconscious that only one of my fans could have put it all >together) I'd be nicer to me if I were you...I still have the $17.50 you sent >in advance for my new double CD! No, by all means, cash the check! And there's more money on the way, a pre-order for "Sponge Boy" and Patrice O'Neill. Yellow Tail is quickly becoming a "buy everything on the label 'cause it's all quite good" kind of labels. About "geeky fans"... I guess I was slamming some of the fans. I'm still freaked out about the girl who brought a toilet paper dispenser to the Moxy F concert for the band to sign. I'm being unfair to her, though. If a fan wants a *hug* from all the members after the show, I shouldn't make fun of it. <<3. Look at their most-requested songs: Uncle Bonsai "Boys Want Sex In the Morning">> > >"Boys Want Sex in the Morning" was not only NOT our most requested song, but it >wasn't even our most "notorious." That would have to be "Penis Envy." Our most >requested songs were "Suzy," "Bedroom Eyes," "Fat Boys," "Men and Women," and >"Penis Envy." In addition, Uncle Bonsai did not perform "Boys Want...." or >"Penis Envy" at all of our shows. In fact, we stopped performing both of >"those" songs, with the odd exception, a couple of years before we broke up. >(The "Myn Ynd Wymyn" release documents most of the songs we were performing the >final years we were together. The "hits" that we continued to throw into the >set, on occasion, were songs like "Billboard Love," "Suzy," "Fat Boys," and >"Heartache.") When I was a freshman at the University of Minnesota, there was only one cassette tape in the computer lab... a worn out copy of "Boys Want Sex In the Morning". We played it over and over, and I became a fan. So, I'm still thinking back to 1988 when it was my personal most-requested song . I'm curious, why did you stop playing "Penis Envy"? Did you get sick of it? I'm sure some of the fans didn't. You probably often get some drunk guy at the back of the hall shouting "Penis! Do the penis one!". And, I'm guessing, you probably also get jerks like me who want to prove they are "long-time-biggest-fans-you-have" fans by shouting out requests for "Lonely Grain of Corn". BTW, how about releasing the expanded cassette version of "Myn Ynd Wymyn" on CD? Or "Lonely Grain of Corn"? Or the neat rare songs you've been posting on your website? Hey, I can "geek-out" as good as the lowliest fanboy. <<4. Nice triple harmonies>> > >Oh, nice...throw us a bone. Oh, I can throw bouquets as well as brickbats. Uncle Bonsai had some of the most incredible harmonies of any band in the 80's. They were compared to the Roches, but I think of "The Story" or "The Bobs". Any Moxy F fans out there should check out www.unclebonsai.com and buy a few CDs. And Andrews recent work shows he has an amazing voice singing solo. Think the high range of Sting combined with the "folksy" un-pretension of a folk artist. Incredible. I'd pay to hear him sing the phone book. And his guitar playing is astounding. <<5. Acoustic rock>> > >Huh??? Where's the rock? Three high voices and an acoustic guitar? (If that >was a compliment, never mind.) Um, I was reaching again. I was thinking that folk rock (like The Foremen, Loudon Wainwright III, or even Barenaked Ladies acoustic stuff) allows the singer to sing funny songs. I can't imagine Pearl Jam pulling off a song that makes people laugh. <<6. The "serious" side...exemplified by really obscure lyrics >> > >Hmm...with the exception of "Making Fun of Foreigners" I never really thought >of our lyrics as obscure. I'm sure you can cite some examples, though. Yeah, I'll refrain from a long post with examples. Last month, I criticized some of Moxy's lyrics as being "bad", when I really should have said "In my opinion, I think these are kind of clunky". I was criticizing the line "Leapin' and lurchin' searching for the Midas Touch". It's a great song with a dramatic beginning and a somber tone. Sometimes, I play a mediocre version of it in "song circles" or a singing parties. However, that line often makes people go "huh?" Yeah, I was picking apart lyrics again. Sorry. <<7. -> Small crowds <->> > >I guess this depends on what you consider small. We only played Boulder a >couple of times and, like someone else mentioned in their bitter response to >you on this list, it takes some time to develop a crowd. (I'm estimating, but I was surprised). Not that *I'm* the arbiter of taste... if people want to see N by Nature, they have every right to... but damn! I'm just scared that Moxy Fruvous will run out of money, get tired of playing small shows, or just plain get tired... and break up.
