I'll try, using the two programs that I'm familiar with, both of which are either free or free evaluation software. ON the condition that you stop calling yourselves stupid. Get on the Web. Go to your favorite download site. Mine is: http://www.tucows.com and since this is my post, we will be using that as an example. If you have Windows 3.1, sorry, can't help ya. Don't know what actually works with Win3.1. But you can always try looking on the site for free downloadable IRC software. If you have Windows95 or higher, search for PIRCH. It's a nifty program that I've used for over a couple of years now, and it keeps getting better. Download it. Install it. I trust you to follow the directions. Once it's installed and you're running the program (having already connected to the internet via your favorite provider), click on the leftmost "Login" button, the one with the Earth connected to a 'puter. It'll give you a little window. In the "IRC Network" dropdown menu, choose Undernet (which is where #moxyfruvous is). In the server menu, either choose a server from their list, or type in your own. I usually first try this one: newyork.ny.us.undernet.org:6668 Every server can connect through (hopefully) more than one port. The port is signified by the four numbers above - 6668. The most common port (and therefore the slowest) is 6667, which is why I try not to use it. If you can't connect, try 6660-6670 or 4400. Enter your personal information. It's up to you what to enter, but whatever you enter will be publicly accessible, so if you like your e-mail address to remain secret, just enter a phony one. Or something. Choose your nicknames. This is the "name" you will appear under on IRC. You can change it at any time while connected (though any one server cannot have two identical nicknames - which is why people use punctuation sometimes. My two nicks are vika and vika- , the second one being the alternate in case there's already a vika online). In the lower right-hand corner of the window, check the Auto Connect checkbox. Click on the Connect button. A bunch of text will (hopefully) float by. When you see the line "You are now logged on. Enjoy", you're in. Commands on IRC are preceded by a forward slash (/). To join a channel, type in /join #channelname (/join #moxyfruvous). To see who is on a channel before joining it (NOTE: people who have the invisible status turned on will not show up there), type in /who #channelname . To change your nickname, type /nick newnickname . To talk on-channel, type text and press enter. To send a private message to JohnS, type /msg JohnS text . Capitalization of nicks optional. If you have a Mac, the best thing I found is IRCLE. So search for that. Download, install, follow the directions. When you're running the program, the easiest way to connect is to just type in the little console window (which should be on the bottom left of your screen, it's the only one you can actually type in) /server servername. So to connect to New York, I type: /server newyork.ny.us.undernet.org:6668 For further actions, see above; when you're on IRC, the commands are pretty much universal. Wokay? Lemme know privately (or publicly) if you're still having trouble. - -v Vika Zafrin, vika at ibm dot net "I much prefer the cozy, sleepy independent shops." -Maria, re: places to get coffee ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 23:05:22 -0400 From: Nate DeRose Subject: Re: irc (stupid us) Vika Zafrin wrote: > > luckydabed@aol.complexity (maria) delighted us with: > > >Please explain how to get onto #moxyfruvous in > >laymans terms. > > I'll try, using the two programs that I'm familiar with, both of which > are either free or free evaluation software.
