This never fails to bring an instant smile to people faces, getting them very interested. Plus, it's quite short, so people don't get the impression that all the guys play is "fluff." >From there I usually pick something else off of Live Noise, since >that's the one I encourage people to buy, and I figure the more they >know off of it, the more likely they are to buy it. Probably King of >Spain and the Drinking Song, because they *are* "standards," and >showcase both the serious and the fun side. King of Spain is how I was introduced to the lads. Heard it by accident on a trip through Pennsylvania about five or so years ago. High up in the mountains, trying to find *any* radio station that would come in clearly. Static, static, buzz, hiss, static... then King of Spain loud and clear, almost from the very beginning of the song. It was this freaky movie moment! Well, my buddy and I were boppin' along in the car, and we knew this was a find! So the song ends... and were waiting to hear someone announce what gift from the Gods we just heard... and they play something else, some other band. Okay. We were patient. Except now the static is coming back and we're losing the station!! But not completely. It comes in and out. And then the next song ends... and another begins!! And now we realize that we better start counting these songs and kind of remembering them because they're (hopefully) gonna back-announce them all and we need to know the name of this particular one, and who the band is. We seriously contemplated pulling over to the side of the road so as not to miss it, but it was very late at night and we were already behind schedule. Fortunately the station never faded away. They played 5 full songs after King of Spain. So it was the 6th in the back-announce, but we got it. We were quite happy. Finding a new cool band is always such a great moment. So the next day, my buddy says to me, "Damn, I can't remember the name of that band, can you?" I could, but I told him I forgot, too :) See, his birthday was in 8 days, and I thought getting him this new CD would be a cool present for him. So we get back to LA, and I head over to Aron's records - just the coolest store there is - and I walk over to the Rock section... And I forgot the name of the band! It just left me. And the harder I tried the worse it got. What I could remember was this: It started with an 'M' or an 'F', or both. But I was pretty sure it was an 'M'. So I just went over to the Misc. M section and went through every CD, deparate, hoping that one would jog my memory... And there it was: Bargainville. Only one copy, but still... all mine. (Or rather my buddy's). So i bought it, gave it to him (he was so thrilled), and figured I'd get my copy from somewhere else, like Tower or Virgin, etc. Sure, I'd probably pay a few bucks more for it - Aron's has *great* prices - but, what the hey. Couldn't find it. Anywhere in town. Did I mention how *COOL* Aron's Records is on Highland avenue? So I e-mailed them off their (old) web address on the back of the CD. Got on the mailing list, and a hat as well. If we hadn't come across this (turns out) college radio station in Pennsylvania - - seriously - I might *still* not have heard of this wonderful group. I actually listen to very little music. But Moxy Fruvous is just plain terrific. Um... I seemed to have strayed from the point of getting newbies hooked :) Sorry. I'm a newbie myself (been listening for less than a month and just signed up here this morning) so I thought I'd make my first post appropriate. It truly was fate that sent me to the Aladdin theatre June 2nd for the MF concert. I had heard their name for years. I had Canadian cousins that were always telling me that I would like them and then never giving me a sample or anything to actually get me to listen to them. But then on the day of the concert I randomly decided I would go out to lunch (something I never do since our deli is so darn cheep) While at establishment of my choosing I picked up a copy of "the Rocket" a music mag that tells of happenings in both Seattle and Portland. I happened to see that the lads were playing THAT NIGHT and remembered the name. Something deep inside told me I should go (I say deep inside because I was really tired and really didn't want to go out that night) and it was so strong that I decided I would. But I had no idea what I was getting into. I like such a wide variety and I didn't know in what context I had been told I would like them. Like "Gee I listen to Dar Williams" followed by "Oh then you would like..." Or "I just bought the new Offspring" followed by "Well, do you listen to..." There were too many possibilities. About an hour before I was supposed to leave I emailed a friend and invited her to come along. I couldn't even answer her questions about them but she decided to come anyway. Well, I got the vibe from the crowd (even though most had never seen them live...it was their first show in Oregon) and was pretty excited. I was unimpressed with the opening band (which were apparently local) but I was totally blown away when they came out on stage! The energy! The talent! The range! I went out to the merch table at the end and bought Live Noise, Wood, and You Will Go To The Moon. I went home and ordered Bargainville and B online. Since then I've memorized just about everything, made sample tapes for several other friends (first song being Bunch of Authors from LN), religiously studied the website and can not wait for the new album. While I lament the years past I could have spent as a Fruhead I am quite happy that my first experience was their live show because I can already tell there is nothing to equal that! Hey MF people, As some of you may already know, Jian co-wrote a song called "This ain't your town no more" with former Rockapella member (now in a solo career) Sean Altman. At Sean's show last Saturday, he mentioned that when Jian was in town for the Fleadh, he stopped by and they recorded the song, with Jian on vocals and the song will appear on Sean's next album, "alt.mania". Sean's been playing this song live at just about all of his shows and he usually credits Jian and mentions Moxy Fruvous each time. It's cool! Maybe I'll cut an mp3 of it when I get around to it. I recorded it recently at a live show. I know someone posted lyrics to the song a long ways back. My recording from Saturday came out good too. Well, look for www.bigsean.com for Sean Altman tour dates and watch for info on how to get the album, if you are one of those people who think it's worth it to get an album for just one Jian Ghomeshi song...
