Well, guys, it's been swell. Please don't think I'm jumping ship because of anything that's gone on these last few weeks...Tomorrow I leave for my annual position at Camp Huston in Gold Bar, WA (where I step into the ring with screaming youth -- gotta love the counselor's job). I will have e-mail access there, but my time is so severely limited that I can't spend my much needed two-hour break wading through posts. So! I'm disconnecting for the summer. With luck, I will return in the fall. Take care, all of you. Be fruitful and multiply. Heather Moore Holden Caufield sez: "Women kill me. They really do. I don't mean I'm oversexed or anything like that - although I am quite sexy. I just like them, I mean. For those of you who don't know, NXNE is a music festival held in clubs all over downtown Toronto, There are about 400 bands, 3 nights of music and a wrap party on the sunday. Wristbands to let you wander around (ok, run from club to club) all weekend go for $18 plus taxes and ticketbastard charges if you have to deal with them. Pretty good price, frankly. Pretty much everyone's set is somewhere between 30 and 45 mins. this allows for 5 bands per club per night, with things shutting down in time for last call. Thursday night Sigrid and I met at Lawrence station a little after 8 to see how closely our plans merged. She had nothing planned except for a stop at C'est What to see Scruj Magduk (pron. Scrooge MacDuck *g*) and possibly going to see Tory at 1 am. Scruj was playing at the same time as Ball in the House, whom I had been directed to go see by the lovely 'ka. So we thought we'd see how it went. First off, a stop at C'est What to hear the lovely and talented Andrea Florian. I don't think her stuff has hit south of the border yet, but she's working on a 3rd label release and if you have a chance to check her out, I highly reccommend it. Sigrid had never heard her before and called her "a cross between Alanis and Sarah". Sarah with an edge anyway. Andrea performs with a backup band consisting of a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer. She herself plays acoustic guitar and keyboard. Still needs to develop her connection with the crowd between songs, but the songs themselves are very well crafted. Having had our fill of Andrea, we headed over to Cameron House, where Five O'Clock Shadow and Ball in the House were playing...'cept BitH had cancelled. Sorry 'ka, wasn't able to form an opinion. Sigrid and I left about a song and a half into FOCS. "Backstreet Boys mixed with the Nylons" was Sigrid's rather harsh criticism.. I'll go one worse.. "and the worst parts of both". I"m sorry but if you start saying things like "THANK YOU TORONTO" to a room of oh.. 40 people, you scare me. Back to C'est What. The universe did NOT come to a halt just before 11 pm on Thursday night.. althought we were afraid it might. "Fiona, this is Fiona." That's right.. to Sigrid, I'm Fiona #2. That was odd. Not that I haven't met other Fionas but y'know.. it was a Cchhaadd moment. Scruj. Yeah. Celtic band claiming to be from Winnipeg, although they introduced each member as being from a different part of Canada *giggle*. Damn they were fun. And they did a cover of a French folk song which, although I didn't follow all of it. (Please, Quebecois FAST without my hearing aid? I'm only human) We clapped and bounced and generally had a great time. I need a CD. SEE this band. That was pretty much it for my Thursday. I'm working again (covering a mat. leave. Yay for longtime temp things. And Veronica i *will* email you about lunch) and last week was training. I wanted to be semicoherent at 8:30 am. Friday. Well Friday started with a long wait in Union Station for the delayed train from Chatham. That's right.. I got to see Drea for the weekend. She stayed at my house and everything. You're all jealous. :D Also, I re-met Adam Duncan. (Meeting people at FruCon II just really doesn't count *g*) We bumped into him while CD shopping, then met up as planned at C'est What. Friday was pretty calm. We just went to C'est What to see Jess Klein. Yay Jess! Worth the price of a wristband all by herself. Friday was also our night for Spotting People. We sat down a few feet away from Andy and Jim Creeggan (Andy really seemed to get into Jess' set, for the record) and about halfway through Jess' performance the wonderful Jude showed up. Jess was... well anyone remember how I said at NoHo that it would probably help if I was really paying attention and not bouncing like anything to see Fruvous/greeting 250 Fruheads (I know too many of you dammit)? I was right. Jess and Austin (her bass player/electric guitarist) warmed up for a bit, and people paid attention almost as much as they did during the show. Bass Players Stick Together Episode #__ : Jess (while checking levels): "What do you think? More of Austin?" Jim Creegan: "More Austin!" Jess: "How bout now?" Jim (ok Jim and about 4 other ppl in that area): "More Austin!" I swear I wanted to quote Chad. Jess' set was lots of fun, especially the songs that Drea and I remembered from NoHo.. more than I thought I would. She didn't play Flirt with This but I didn't really miss it. Wanted more though. My CDs to get list is getting longer. And I want to know what TV show the name of the club reminded her of ;) After the set, we ambushed Jude and talked for oh.. most of the next person's set. She insisted that Saturday at midnight we HAD to see Starlight. So we marked it down. Saturday. We visited the Bar Code (where the Swing Gang plays Wednesdays *g*) and took in a bit of Sarah Harmer's set. Wasn't impressed. Was pretty damn bored. I think after Oh Susannah, Jess Klein, Sarah Slean, and Susan Werner, I've had my fill of female-solo-artists-who-have-opened-for-Fruvous. Jess and Susan are keepers, with maybe a side of Sarah for mellow nights, but there are only so many of the type I can deal with. SIR was kinda the priority for the night. For me anyway. Sorry guys. I feel like I kinda dragged Sigrid and Drea to the Reverb with me. They were really nice about it, and seemed to enjoy the music, which surprised me, since SIR is an R&B/pop group. It was only 2 of the group, Scott (lead vocalist, writer, producer, keyboardist, founder) and Rohana (drums). Despite the lack of guitars they sounded really good. It was their first time ever in Toronto and the Reverb was pretty empty, but at least the Reverb's HORRIBLE sound guy managed to do nothing more serious than keep the drums too loud. (I've heard him do worse) SIR is definitely worth checking out if you happen to be in Alberta. They've been together about..a year, year and a half. Check out http://mp3.com/sir for 2 tracks from their demo. I was entirely impressed that they played 3.. maybe 4 tracks from the demo, and at least 5 that weren't. We skipped Peter Mulvey and hung around to chat with Scott who is a sweetheart. So.. last band of the weekend. Starling. Ted's Wrecking Yard was crowded and HOT HOT HOT. Damn. Finally broke down and ordered a Coke. Should hav e ordered a glass of ice. Starling are from Ottawa, and were kind of loud. I was afraid that Jude had actually steered us wrong and we were going to get a "can't hear the band for their instruments" band. For about 5 seconds. If my feet hadn't hurt so much and it wasn't so hot, I would have danced. They were great. Sigrid bought the last CD. (I own part of that CD.. that was my twoonie with the tenner!) BTW.. congratulations to Jack Ross and his new bride, whom Starling congratulated as well. The Nields opted not to show, the Waltons cancelled, we didn't see Peter Mulvey and it definitely wasn't either of the Ark shows... but I'm going again next year :) - -- "There's even a taste of Rick Astley in his low register, and while no sane person would ever admit to being influenced by Rick Astley, one of the most appealing things about The Ego Has Landed is that Robbie and sanity are barely on speaking terms." - review from Rolling Stone Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
