Another marvelously special show tonight at the Ark! Whereas last night was the quietly intense show, this was the more loudly intense and upbeat show. In the interest of maintaining a pseudo-regular sleep schedule, I'll post a setlist tommorow. In the mean time, I'll tease you all. Opened up with Down From Above and Horseshoes. A few upbeat songs followed, and then they hopped off mic to sing.. THAT BOY! Then, Boss off mic. There was a rearranged version of Too Careful and then It's Too Cold came out of the stack of retired songs. Somewhere in the middle, we were treated to Poor Napoleon and Early Morning Rain (both *great* performances). A big highlight later was Nuits De Reve, featuring an intense guitar solo. The first encore was going to be Authors, but thanks (thank GOD) to a guitar problem, we instead got Billie Jian! The night ended with a long overdue Drinking Song. Yes, I'm serious about this one too. ;-) It was a great show -- some thought it was better than last night, but I liked last night better. Both were just jaw-dropping shows. Thanks to the guys for putting so much into these shows! - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Josh Woodward, CheEsy Fru. joshw@fruhead.com Web Site and Tape List: http://www.fruhead.com/joshw/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 00:59:18 -0400 From: Joe Navratil Subject: REVIEW: 6/12/99 Chicago Fleadh Festival Hey all -- I haven't seen too much posted about the Fleadh show, but that's probably because I've had a grand total of ten minutes in the last week to read the newsgroup. Cellular modem, anyone? Donna (donna) and I decided we needed a serious Fru-fix since it had been months since either of us had seen any shows -- so Donna drove from Cleveland to Ann Arbor, and then we made the trip together to Chicago and Milwaukee before the two shows at the Ark this week. We're co-writing these reviews -- this is the first, dunno when the rest will be posted :-) So Donna and I made the trip to Chicago Saturday morning, only hours after she had taught me how to drive her (standard transmission) car. I didn't drive much -- Donna did. I still owe her for that :-) We got in to Chicago about 11:45 their-time, but the gates weren't open yet. They eventually did open. Due to time constraints, I'm going to skip all of the gushing about Elvis Costello and Van Morrison and Taj Mahal and Martin Sexton and the Muck Brothers that I would normally put here and skip right to the Fruvous set :-) Fruvous got on at 10:15 (scheduled for 9:50, so they were actually about twenty minutes early, Frutime), by which point two women who were at least eight feet tall--obviously about to try out for the WNBA -- had wormed their way to a position directly in front of Donna. Tall folks lack of consideration aside, the set started with an order for all of us to file out of the tent: (Murray) "This band has travelled many miles to be here tonight, and to play to each of you as an individual. So if you could all file out of the tent except one of you, we'll begin the show" or somesuch :-) Here's a correct setlist. Jordan, I saw that you posted one but I seem to remember you saying it was from memory and didn't have a chance to verify :-) Half As Much Jockey (Banter: getting paid every time Guiness is mentioned on stage) Horseshoes (Banter: Hootie-ripping) YWGTTM When She Talks Minnie Johnny Saucep'n KOS/short GE&H Love Potion #9 The Drinking Song It felt a lot like a "Fruvous crash course". Greatest hits, not too much banter (probably because the festival was supposed to clear out at 11 sharp), the new songs they seem to be pushing a lot and the old songs that get the crowd moving. At one point they had a group conference on stage, and decided to nix a slow song (dunno which one), because "That's not what you all want anyway" (Jian). Afterwards, we don't know if the guys actually came out -- it was a long day, both Donna and I were muddy and tired and ready for the drive to Kenosha, which didn't really end up happening but that's an entirely different story. We both met (well, I met, Donna already knew) Jordan-umlaut at this show, as well as Barb-dweedle and their friend Kumar. Didn't get much of a chance to hang with 'em though, because everyone was being escorted out the gate that was rather conveniently ( :-P ) right next to the Irish Heritage revival tent. -Joe ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 04:48:42 GMT From: Mi in Mississauga Subject: Re: Suggestions for Alternative Fleadh Festival Acts in NYC/B-Town In article <19990615122424.08855.00000071@ng-cm1.aol.com>, skystar117@aol.comPHAEDRUS (Debb) wrote: I've heard a bunch of different acts being mentioned here, but > haven't been keeping notes.
