I've been trying to form some kind of "review" in my head for the last couple of days, and I think Jordan says it all here. I was thinking about the "pissed at the NG" times that I've had myself, times when people here have suggested that I'd done something to offend the band. Because of all that, I was very reluctant and afraid to approach any of the band members - I had no idea how much of it had gotten back to them, or to what extent it might even be true. Thank goodness I did end up speaking to them (well, two of them anyway); they restored my faith in pretty much everything. They didn't know or care about the accusations that had gone on here in the newsgroup. They *did* care about talking to me, just as (I really got to observe) they truly care about all their fans. Mike is absolutely amazing - he has something good to say to every person he meets, about whatever subject they want to talk about. Where can I learn to be that way? And Dave was just as sweet as ever, remembering me and still being kind even when I told him a story that made me look like a total idiot. Out here in Colorado we don't get as many opportunities to see live shows, and in the months in between it's easy to get too caught up in the little conflicts that go on among our far-flung group. We can lose sight of what it is that brought us together in the first place. It's so good, when we finally get another show, to be reminded of what's really important for us as fans. It's about the joy we get from the music. It's about supporting the band, because they're doing this for us (flying in for a few short hours just to put on a kickass show 'cause we asked for it, knowing they had to leave right away - *mother***, do they deserve some huge thanks and respect for that!). And it's about acknowledging that we come from many different perspectives, while also remembering that we've got this one great wonderful thing in common. And that one thing counts for a lot. k@ BTW Jordan, you're welcome...any time :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 01:36:07 -0600 From: katrin@dimensional.com (Katrin) Subject: Re: boulder show review In article <376303df@cs.colorado.edu>, kelloggp@nagita.cs.colorado.edu says... > Killfile me. Now, I don't remember if he meant before "Gordon" - ie big in Canada - or with the recent US popularity. Either way, I was lucky enough to see them a few times live before this in tiny civic auditoriums and street fesivals (not, however, Nathan Phillips Square! :) And in a few weeks I'm going to see them at the Molson Amphitheatre here in Toronto (!) and I have to say that I'm a little nervous that the show might have changed fundamentally since the last time I saw them. (too lopng ago) 'Cause the *whole reason* that I like BNL and Fruvous so much is not just because of the music but because they're *fun*!! I like to go to a show to laugh, and have a few silly songs (for crying out loud, I love the Arrogant Worms... even Spike Jones - now *that* one goes back a while!) and banter and inside jokes. I also like other bands because they are deep and introspective and all the other things you mentioned (the Tea Party spring immediately to mind). I guess all I'm trying to say is that cracking jokes and having fun and yes, even playing the same song at each and every show is not neccessarily a bad thing. I kinda like it. I don't want to be serious, deep and introspective all the time. A negative opinion of a band (not just one song but of the performance and the entire way they do things) on a newsgroup dedicated to them is usually a troll. Also, considering the crack you made about songs involving Jar Jar Binks seemed a lot like an attack on Lawrence's No No Jar Jar filk, cut him some slack for being annoyed. >I don't get it, it was objective, wasn't it? An opinion's never objective. I think Kate's post pretty much said everything I was going to say about Fruvous and their name. >Geez, people are testy because their favourite band isn't popular. Actually, Chad was just stating the facts. I suppose you'd have to meet him or at least read more of his posts to understand when he's not actually angry. Chad's rarely pissed off on the newsgroup. Naughty by Nature are, for whatever reason, more well known than Fruvous and therefore draw a bigger crowd. History has shown that the more often Fruvous goes back to a city, the bigger the crowds get. Whether or not having the crowds get bigger is a good thing is an oft-discussed topic on a.m.m-f. Patrick, I hope you go to a few more shows when you get the opportunity. No matter how "serious" the next album seems, and despite Jian's joke about Thornhill being their "grownup" album, I don't think that it's about to go away anytime soon. One of the best things about Moxy Fruvous is that they are so multifaceted they defy categorization. They are highly educated, and love words, they have several different types of humour among them, they are excellent instrumental musicians, and they do think deeply about many things in their lives and the world at large. It's the combination that makes them so attractive. If you can't learn to love the humour inherent in Fruvous' shows I doubt that you'll stick around very long as a fan.
