I only read this morning what you were wearing. The encore was indeed Authors and Drinking Song. Also was an apology by Jian (if I remember correctly) saying that normally they would talk with the fans after the show, but that the theater had to kick us all out to make room for the throngs of N by N fans waiting outside. Instead, the guys talked to people outside the theater, and then they went to "Nick's" bar next door and talked some more. What troopers! Somebody had them sign a hamster wheel. Other people sported new $70 hockey jerseys or t-shirts. They seemed ok to sign anything, including copies of "The Onion" that seem to be everywhere in Boulder. My cranky review: This was my first Moxy show, and I was underwhelmed. The band seemed a little low on energy... a common problem for bands that get flown into the thin air of Colorado. Of course they did King of Spain (though rushed... as if they wanted to get through it), of course they did the drinking song, authors, and Pisco. One guys near me was shouting for King O Spain as soon as they walked onstage, so I guess the band didn't want to disappoint. Note that there were less than 200 people inside for the show. Why so few where there were almost five hundred waiting for NbN? I have a feeling that Moxy is a novelty act like Barenaked Ladies, The Bobs, or Uncle Bonsai. It's easy to come up with a funny song ("If I Had a Million Dollars", for example) that people want you to play again and again. Heck, BnL has people throwing Kraft Cheese N' Macaroni at them.... years after the joke has grown stale. It's hard for a joke band to get respectability. Sure, they can do slower introspective numbers with obscure lyrics ("Horseshoes" vs. the BnL's newer stuff like "When You Dream"). However, the nerdy man-boy fans seem to want humorous songs featuring Jar Jar Bink parodies or references to the Colorado Avalanche. Ha ha. Well, no thanks. I'll stick to bands that can keep a lighthearted attitude but still play good songs without going for the cheap laugh. Recent buys: Jason Falkner, Fountains of Wayne, Ben Folds Five, and Imperial Teen. My point was that like Moxy Fruvy, Uncle Bonsai took the easy road by writing too many songs with cheap laughs. 1. They both have dumb band names that were probably funny at one time 2. Both are far too chummy with geeky fans in the crowd 3. Look at their most-requested songs: Uncle Bonsai "Boys Want Sex In the Morning" Moxy Fruvous "King of Spain" Both novelty-type Dr. Demento songs 4. Nice triple harmonies 5. Acoustic rock 6. The "serious" side... exemplified by really obscure lyrics 7. -> Small crowds <- Of course, Uncle Bonsai isn't around anymore. Check out Andrew Ratshin's latest at www.yellowtailrecords.com I'm sure the comparison of Moxy's version of "Psycho Killer" to the Bobs version has been made. For many people, it is hard to get by the first impression, especially if that first impression was something that hit it off with you. If someone's introduction to Fruvous was as that "King of Spain" band or that GE&H band and loves it, they may be dissappointed or feel cheated when they see the directions the band has gone over the past 7 years. They haven't just done King of Spain and Green Eggs and Ham for 7 years. They've gone through a lot of other things as well. But not being able to get over King of Spain isn't the bands problem. It's a problem with the fans. And worse, the band gets punished for it. The band has tried really hard to bring more musically to the table than congas and acapella music and to me they have done a great job. But a lot of predisposed media that say Bargainville only know Moxy Fruvous from 7 years ago. > It's hard for a joke band to get respectability. > Sure, they can do slower introspective numbers > with obscure lyrics ("Horseshoes" vs. the BnL's > newer stuff like "When You Dream"). No one is going for a cheap laugh I'd think. Those men up there on stage are entertaining each other. They are doing what they see as funny and allowing people to watch. They even include the people in it at times. It's like comedians. Not everyone likes the comedy of Adam Sandler or Jerry Seinfeld or Kathy "it's bad when Suddenly Susan is a positive career choice" Griffin. But there are people who think that what they do is hilariously great (except maybe for Kathy Griffin). Take Fruvous for what you enjoy of it. If you demand "good songs without going for the cheap laugh" and don't think the entire album Wood or almost all of the new songs (My Poor Generation, If Only, Downsizing, Independence Day, Earthquakes, Grudge, I Will Hold On, When She Talks) don't qualify then maybe Fruvous isn't the band for you. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 22:40:15 GMT From: ross_hendry@bigfoot.com (Ross Hendry) Subject: Re: **itinerary** On Fri, 11 Jun 1999 12:21:18 -0500, Judith Coombe for Moxy Fruvous wrote: >hello all! > >an itinerary update for you! > >Jude Dang!
