It's Wednesday afternoon. I'm drawing as fast as I can, trying to finish tomorrow's comic so that I can grab a bus downtown, to connect to the bus to Boulder, to meet Tom at the Neal Stephenson booksigning. I realize I'm never gonna get done in time, so I stuff my paper and pens in my bag and drive to the park-n-ride in my illegal car with the expired plates. I hop the light rail downtown, catch the Boulder bus and make it to the bookstore in time. I find Tom, sit down in the seat he's saved for me and pull out the comic from my bag to finish inking. The people in front of us are looking through a storyboarded Star Wars screenplay. We start commenting on the book too and are soon engaged in conversation with them. One of them mentions a home-town connection with a Star Wars actor. We all think that's cool and start talking about other such things. I say that I tend to be connected to people who are only famous among really small groups of people, so no one else really cares, making them not famous connections at all. "Like what?" one girl asks. "Oh, no one you've heard of, really," I say. "No, really, what?" she presses the issue. "Okay," I tell her. "I went to school with a guy who produced one of the albums by my favorite band, whom no one's ever heard of." "Who?" Of course she asks. "Moxy Früvous," I say, expecting a blank stare. Instead she gets enthusiastic. "Moxy Früvous! I love them! They're coming here next week, aren't they?" The guy joins in. "King of Spain, right? Yeah, they're pretty cool. Are you from Canada?" "No, I'm from North Dakota," I admit. Then the girl on his other side speaks up. "North Dakota? You're kidding! Where? I lived in Grand Forks for a year!" I stare at her. "I thought you looked familiar." It turns out she's quite a bit younger than I am, but we did know some of the same teachers, and she may have been in the children's theatre program the year my sister was a student helper. She saw the high school production of West Side Story that my sister was in. None of this group has ever seen Früvous live, and so we are of course bound by duty to make sure they are assimilated into The Body. We make them promise to show up at the Fox on the 10th. Neal Stephenson arrives and reads an amazing passage from his new book, Cryptonomicon, which Tom has just finished reading and I am about to start. Having only read Snow Crash so far, I'm more impressed with him now than ever. And you'd better not even get me started on his geeky cuteness. We line up to get our books signed. I slip him a WfB business card, rationalizing that Doug would never forgive me if I got this close to greatness and didn't even try. I feel all embarrassed about it, but Tom says he saw him pocket the card. We meet up with the group of people we've just met and all decide to go to dinner together. Over some excellent Mexican food and margaritas, we discuss comics (they love Love & Rockets and Strangers In Paradise too!), other bands that we simply *must* listen to, intellectual property law, the relative misery of driving through Nebraska and Iowa, various forms of geekery, mutual acquaintances we probably have in Michigan, the scandalous circumstances surrounding the disappearance of my high school theatre teacher, and why I just picked the *wrong* book by D.F. Wallace to start with (okay, okay, I'll give him another chance). By this time it's after 10, and I know I'll never make it in time to upload the comic. Oh well. Tom reassures me that all will be forgiven, but I feel guilty. I rationalize that it's for a good cause. We drive to the park-n-ride to pick up my car. I get onto the road right behind a cop in the next lane. He's driving really slowly, and there's no way I can stay behind and to the side of him without arousing suspicion. I figure I'll just drive normally and hope for the best. So much for hope. I get in front of him but just not far enough in front. He sees my expired tags and pulls me over. My first thought: "Please just make this quick; I really have to go to the bathroom." The good karma of which our new friends spoke has not completely deserted me - he doesn't check for my (nonexistent) proof of insurance, and I get away with only a ticket for expired plates. I drive away thanking the powers that be, and make it home to send the comic on its way, only about half an hour after its nightly deadline. All in all, the evening still came out on the side of good. k@ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 15:14:28 GMT From: Ambush Bug Subject: Pre-Vault Dinner Hello All, Myself, Kate Bunting (who occasionally posts here), and a few others, will be meeting for dinner at the food court of the inner harbor in Baltimore at 7:00 before the show at the Vault.
