This was apparantly a result of the show's producers theorizing that several hundred years in the future, women would evolve such that their breasts would all be the same size, eliminating female self-consciousness and the male desire to leer. The Daily Telegraph said buyers working for Tesco were told by the retail psychologist who carried out the research that a current preference for smaller busts was the reason why traditionally big, fleshy melons were remaining unsold. "We were quite surprised by the results of the market research," a Tesco spokesman was quoted as saying by the newspaper. "But it's certainly produced results. I think the whole point is that she'd be even more of a beauty if she weren't such a calculatedly sad girl. This girl reminds me a lot of the girl from Shawn Mullins' "Lullabye". Both songs seem to take a shot at the prevailing ethos that seems to celebrate or endorse as normal angst and depression and pervasive ennuie, especially in women. Sad Girl troubles me because of lines like "depression is romantic when it's a fad, girl" but I think it's MEANT to trouble us. The point is that it seems to be a pose ... a societal trend ... based on CK ads and fatalistic doomsday-seeking cultural influences. And it doesn't have to be that way, and the truly brave recognize that and fight the life-cheapening nature of these cultural themes. Our narrator seems to indicate that he'd like the Sad Girl a lot more if she didn't accept all this and present herself as a victim of circumstance. Real clinical depression is an excruciating, sometimes deadly illness, not a fad, and people who suffer from it can be as utterly incapacitated as those with any devastating physical illness or injury. But angsty ennuie, of the faddish pop-culture variety that the Sad Girl seems to embrace, trivializes this and is an inexcusable waste of time, energy, and creativity. I think THAT's the point of the song.
