I'm so relieved to see actual documentation asserting that "they" is considered acceptable (at least by some). I've tried "him/her" and "s/he" etc., and the trouble I have with these is that they're hard to pronounce aloud, never mind that they also sort of act like obstacles interrupting the smooth flow of my reading. And rather than being universal or neutral, "Hir" to me always seems to refer to a literal person of ambiguous or uncertain gender - maybe because of just such a person I knew who used it to describe "hirself." And of course, I refuse to use "he" to refer to the entire human race. It's just plain rude (and not only to half of us). The singular "they" is definitely most comfortable for writing, reading and speaking. k@ Of course, if you can manage to construct a sentence that obviates the need for any of these, more power to ya. I know it's not always possible. ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #355 ********************************************
