One of my current projects is a web site I'm making related to the Italian renditions, medieval, Renaissance and modern, of the French legend of Roland (Orlando in Italian). Well, the Renaissance guy who wrote a continuation of the medieval _Orlando innamorato_ (Roland in Love) called it _Orlando furioso_, which means, no more, no less, Mad Orlando (mad as in crazy, nuts, he's so in love, and it's so incredibly unrequited, that he's gone bonkers.... well, some magic has to do with that, too). Hey HEY kiddies!! so i applied to a bunch of crazy schools... mostly to LA and NYC schools as my major is mass communications (audio engineering/production and/or broadcast). My first decision was that i didn't want to be on the west coast (so despite the large sums of money each of these schools offered me... USC and Loyola Marymount were out). Anyways, that left... NYU, Columbia, and St. Lawrence U. and well... Columbia didn't offer me much in the way of money so that was eliminated. Both NYU and St. Lawrence have been recruiting me for my swimming (which if you kids didn't know... is basically my life... 90% of my travelling is to national meets and the other 10% is concerts). And well... last week NYU flew me out there and this upcoming weekend i'll be in canton, NY (which is why i was hoping to make it to the show in utica) because St. Lawrence is flying me out there. (sorry if there are any typos, or if this rambles, but I am in the middle of writing a neurobiology term paper, and have been up for about 42 hours now...) First of all, it is part of Dandelion Day, where the bulk of the student body wanders the campus drunk, and with drinks in hand. Thus, the "UR students only" disclaimer. But, seeing as it is going to be held outdoors, I see no way that they can check everyone for ID's. So, I hope to see as many of you there as possible, as I really doubt most of my fellow students can *truly* appreciate the guys! I figure, seeing as everyone is going to be drunk, or at least tipsy, if you are asked for an ID, simply act drunk, and say you left it in your room. Of course, it only works if you convincingly look old enough to be a student... It obviously wouldn't work for an indoors concert either, but I highly doubt that will happen, as the main building most concerts are held in is currently being renovated. I have a feeling they will keep it outdoors unless it is absolutely impossible! I am just wondering how the guys are going to sing the drinking song with a drunk student body as an audience... - -- when you see the light at the end of the tunnel, beware. it could be the headlights of a train coming straight at you. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 04:58:56 GMT From: vika@ibm.net (Vika Zafrin) Subject: Re: Underage Drinking and such Alright, I've held off long enough on this thread. Mainly I'm posting because I have an Important (well, imo) Question: Is there a law that prohibits clubs, concert halls and similar venues from *allowing* under-21 people *into* their establishment while they are serving alcohol there? I don't believe so. I could be wrong, but I really doubt the federal, or even a state, government would go that far. What is prohibited is for bars to SERVE alcohol to people under 21. I've actually asked people at several clubs around Boston about this, including The Paradise, where Fruvous have played several (3+?) times. The answer? Sometimes they just don't want to risk serving alcohol to underage youngsters (as opposed to of-age youngsters, don't get offended or anything, please). People bring fake IDs, people lie, and it's the venue that gets in trouble if they get caught. And that's the story as I understand it. Could it be handled better? YES! Stamps and bracelets and whatnot. But if the venue doesn't want to deal with people potentially cheating it, it's their very understandable prerogative. As for bitching about the underage issue on the newsgroup, I am certainly not going to prohibit anyone from doing that. In fact, I agree with you all (as you may know if you were here just before the Mercury Lounge shows in November 1997: see my posts as to the idiocy of drinking laws in this our country with amazingly high alcohol-related death rates... lawmaker get clue!!). But it does get repetitive over the months and even years, and accomplishes nothing. My humble (hah! who'm I kidding??) opinion. (Oh, and before anyone starts flaming me, let me reiterate that I Know How You Feel and that the above is coming from someone whose birthday is in March of 1977 and who got into the 21+ shows at Merc. Lounge in November of 1997.)
