Back to Roch in time for the Fri concert @ RIT. I'm in Endicott (outside of Binghamton) which is about 160+ miles from Rochester. I've been averaging about 2 1/2 hours per trip, not counting a half-way stop (Yeah, I tend to do about 80+ mph, I can't help it.. hee hee). So, I'm supposed to be teaching until 4pm, I'm hoping to get them out early, so that I can change and hop right on the road and get back in time to find Amy (who has my tickies) and get together with those I got tickies for. Veronica: are you nuts?? The sooner I get 'em outta class, the better. Here's my basic outline: customizing email, calendar tools, creating & managing public databases, and the replication process. Believe it or not, it's a reach for some of them... *sigh* Jian Spottings (but before that... someone mentioned Mari-Jian-a, and I immediately think... I'm not fond of long hair... but he wears it so well, and it's so soft, and... um, anyway ;^} As of this afternoon, I could not get to FDC either, I kept getting a message saying, "the server is down, please reconnect later." Lori: whenever you view a web page, you're storing a copy of that temporary internet file in your computer, that area is referred to as your cache. Generally, for speed in reconnecting to pages you frequent (ie, FDC), your PC will pull up the cached copy first, then update changes from the actual site. Sometimes, if there is a problem connecting to the site, you'll get a message that the PC is pulling the cached copy instead. OK, I think I've geeked way too much tonight. Last thing, I promise!! I had this weird mini dream that actually was a Fru dream, it was Robotech meets Fruvous... we were going to a concert and there were Zentraedi giants and regular sized folk (Zentraedi are the alien former enemies from the cartoon series, etc). Instead of a concert for Lynn Minmei (annoying singing heroine who in the original Japanese version gets the $^&$ slapped out of her... hee hee), it was a concert for Moxy Fruvous (yes, all this was animated... with the guys portrayed in true anime style), and I almost got crushed by this giant hand as this alien started singing "River Valley" in a booming voice and was leaning back. Then I woke up. Weird... Okay, I'm gonna respond to a lot of this stuff. Prom always was and may always be one of my favourite things to talk about and you'll see why. But I've got to stop! I'm out of high school and I need to let go! : ) Fruchild said (about my wings and halo): >haha, but it is ironic cause if I did buy a dress I was going to get fairy wings Yah, I didn't go as a faerie, though. I was an angel. Little story. My first year, I went with a guy and it was just awesome. We were really close friends and he asked me to go with him. Excitement! [well, one of the really cool parts was that he was Mr. Desirable in his Senior class (swimmer, beautiful, ripped body, smart, in a few plays...) and he could've had his pick of ANYONE for a date -- interestingly, he wanted to go with me just cause he knew we'd have fun. Getting these wicked stares from frou-frou Senior girls because I was a Junior, a Drama Geek, and not 5'10" and Cindy Crawford-beautiful was the greatest thing. Okay, I know it's not a very cool thing to say, but what underdog doesn't LOVE to make popular people jealous? : )] Anyway, Senior year, there weren't any guys I wanted to go with, and then there was that whole "what guy is gonna match my ensemble" dilemma, so my best friend Faith and I went together. Our outfits were thematic anyway, so she was my date. We got a date rate on our tickets and stuff. Oh, so you know, she was a devil and I was an angel and I designed our dresses so they were sort of improvisation on a theme and there were shared elements between them. The best part about that prom? Well, there were all the girls in the "princess" dress (the poufy skirt boned bodice ones that were so popular last year) who just GLARED when we walked in... How *dare* we destroy the sanctity of prom by using it as an excuse to dress in costume? : ) Hah. Fiona said: >- Jeff was a confederate soldier and Jen was a southern belle. This is so weird cause I was gonna tell about my friends who did the exact same thing and then I got your post. Weird. ellen said: >*snort* speaking as someone who went to both of hers, y'all didn't miss much. >it was just another dance, with bad food. Now, here's the meat of the matter. I think a lot of people go with the idea that prom is the dance of all dances and it's just going to be this faerie wonderland and all that, which is about the most fictional thing I've ever heard. But see, I think that if the attitude is changed, prom can be a lot of fun, regardless of the dance. Case In Point: prom for me and my friends lasts (on average) about 36 hours. The afternoon before, we all gather together to watch a million prom movies (Carrie, Buffy, Valley Girl, My Boyfriend's Back, Pretty In Pink, etc etc) until late the next morning. The whole time, we are doing at-home spa stuff -- nails, conditioning hair treatments, masks, severe moisturization of elbows and feet (Saran wrap and socks overnight will do wonders), blah blah blah. We do a trial run of makeup ideas, and then go ballistic and end up doing very eighties kind of streaky blush and stuff. Take Pictures. The next morning, we wake up LATE, eat breakfast and do our ritual "running about" (getting boutonnieres, pick up halos from florists, and so on). This is where people usually break up for a while. We reconvene a few hours before the dance/dinner and do everyone's makeup and hair together. It's sort of a last minute beauty fest. Then, the dance. Afterward, none of this "drinking in a hotel room" crap. We do things like sneak into a park and set up a picnic for our dates and then lead them to it with torches and sidewalk chalk. Star spinning after prom is the best activity (we were never ones for the drunken orgies anyway). Then, EVERYONE sleeps over at someone's house. Next morning, Denny's. It's quite a long deal. Really, the dance is not very big. I mean, the rest of it is so much more important. The dance is a great excuse to play dress up and go crazy with your friends. Too many people worry about having the perfect hair and having The Dress and not spilling on themselves and looking cute while they dance and getting good photos and so on and so on. ICK! Who wants that? Just get a bunch of friends together and have a girly-party. That's my advice, at least, and it's seemed to work swimmingly for THIS non-dance attendee (been caught at [count em] THREE other high school dances, and at all three I was dressed in costume -- faerie, nineteen forties royalty, and finally Scary Spice). I've always had a thing with coordinating prom with, like, ten people and trying to get everything to work (last year we had meetings). For me, it was a great challenge. k@ said: >went as Penny Priddy for Halloween once, and nobody got that either :( I've said it before and I'll say it again. THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER! (says Heather, who's band was named Perfect Tommy) k@ gets about a million rad-points for this. Veronica said: >Or being same said height and broad shouldered but smallish >otherwise, and deal with the fact that, in order to fit across the >shoulders, things must fall in a very tent-like manner around the rest of >you... Ohmigod, preach it sistah. Okay, not tall, but still receive the tent-effect from clothes cause I've got shoulders like Bluto. Ew, weird mental picture. I just hate that, like, NO cute forties fitted suit jackets fit me cause I've got shoulders like a football player. This is a source of much distress for me. Okay, so I'm gonna force myself to stop now and (cross your fingers) not respond to this thread again (this is BEYOND off-topic and it's gotta stop soon or we're gonna have to change ourselves to alt.functions.prom). I just wanted to share my stories, damnit! Heather Moore (who, interestingly, wrote an article for the prom issue of the Catamount [high school paper] about teachers and what they did for their proms. The only one who regretted it was the one who didn't go. I'm not kidding - NO ONE recognized the costume (pink fringed dress, men's plaid jacket, high heels, short blonde hair - alas, no gun). And this was a crowd of hippie-geek types around my own age. I was sorely disappointed. A few years earlier I dressed as Laura Palmer (flesh-colored body stocking, plastic dropcloth, bluish makeup & little R under the fingernail).
