Well, last night was the Queen's Bands fomal banquet (*AMAZING* time!!). As usual, we had a big slide show at the end of the awards and speeches and stuff. My friend Cookie put in a rather nice portion of the Drinking Song, beginning with "And the band played on...". Very appropriate, especially given the "drunk on the lawn" state that most of us were in at the time. It made me very excited, and I wondered why Cookie had put it in there. Then I remembered that she's a friend of Jian's - of course she'd think of the song! :) :) Veronica - -- *************************************************************************** "Never look at the trombones, | Veronica Gruneberg it only encourages them." | Dept. of Biology - Richard Strauss | Queen's University | Kingston, Ontario ------------------------------ Date: 28 Mar 1999 22:52:40 GMT From: Gruneberg Veronica J <6vjg@qlink.queensu.ca> Subject: Re: Ponderings... (Long) Indeed, I too was going to point out the Civic Holiday. It's a great one - this way we get one long weekend per month throughout the summer, more or less: Victoria Day (or the May 2-4 weekend), Canada Day, Civic Holiday and Labour Day. Really quite wonderful, unless I get stuck working *all* of them again this year. By myself. Then again, as a university student, I would love another holiday November/December. We have Thanksgiving in October (where it belongs, when I'm running out of food...) and then nothing again until Christmas. I think Ontario should do what almost every other province has done and make Remembrance Day a statutory holiday. :) Veronica - -- *************************************************************************** "Never look at the trombones, | Veronica Gruneberg it only encourages them." | Dept. of Biology - Richard Strauss | Queen's University | Kingston, Ontario ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 23:39:55 GMT From: petit_chou@juno.com Subject: Philly and beyond (a little lengthy)... Boys and Girls, I have returned! After a short vacation in the city that never sleeps (NYC), I have resumed my station at my computer. Rejoice! Anyway, I haven't noticed that anyone has said anything about the Great Big Sea show at the Painted Bride in Philly (last Fri Nite) and it just makes me so happy to be the first (if I'm not the first, just let me lead a deluded life, o-tay?) to review it. Alright. So, previously, I have met only two Fruheads (ng Fruheads, at least -- and this is not to say that either are insignificant: Hello George and JenCyn!). My trip to Philadelphia more than tripled that (some of the folks I met were not regular posters). It all began like this... I was supposed to meet Lori, but met ladywench and her friend Beth (is that right) first. There were two other folks sitting on a bench, who were also acquainted with Fru. Lori came in, we hung (hanged?) around, we went in to see the show. Opening Act No.1: Willie Porter You WXPN folks might know of him. This guy rocks. He is an amazing guitarist, with the sweetest voice you ever did hear. He had that kind of head, as Lori noted, that you just want to go up and rub. I was particularly impressed with his ability to command the crowd when it was JUST HIM on the stage. Willie and a guitar. That's it. Wow. Longish songs with some clever lyrics. At one point, he decided to write a song *with* the audience, completely improved (brilliant, if you ask me), and he took suggestions about content. My traveling partner Emily suggested "pound cake" and he worked it into the song. Yay for her! So, he just kicked some serious bootie (I liken him to Elliott Smith with better guitar work and some lighter, peppier lyrics. One of his songs sounded really Lyle Lovett-y). Listen to this guy. Opening Act No.2: PushStars Many of the yapping, primping girls in front of us were there to see these guys. The PushStars are a three piece band from Boston whose song "Everything Shines" is featured in the movie "There's Something About Mary." The lead singer was a TOTAL pretty-boy -- his wide lapels and shiny teeth and shellacked hair gave him away. We found him to be particularly rude to his band mates who, as I later found out, were loads cooler than he is. The bassist also played the piano (sometimes at the same time) and the drummer played...well, he played some really lame and uninteresting drum parts. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy them, cause I bought both their CDs and their songs were really catchy and poppy, but...well, they were just not as cool as Willie. Headliner: Great Big Sea Ohmigod. What is there to say? The guys come out and stand in a line. The stage is bare except for four microphones. The instrument changes were done really swiftly by this guy standing off stage who'd run the new instruments in at light speed. Alan (who sings lead on many of the songs and is adorably paunchy in that jovial musician kind of way and has great hair) is the funniest thing since sliced bread. He spoke a lot of the between song stuff, but some of the other guys got some good comments in there as well. Interesting note: The GBS lineup was very similar to a Moxy Fruvous lineup. Stage Murray was the bassist, a rather quiet fellow who kept his arms at his sides and spoke little. Stage Jian was Alan, the Talker. Stage Mike was the one who replied to Alan's witticisms. Stage Dave was the reasonably quiet guy who played about a million different instruments (accordion, two different pipes, fiddle, mandolin...). Anyway, they played a really long set. Mostly stuff that is on "Rant and Roar," (which they pimped in a most undignified and incredibly hysterical fashion: "y'see, [the bassist's] nan's only birthday wish, on this, her 86th birthday, is for us to sell one million copies of our album") with some older stuff mixed in. There was a group of terribly drunk individuals in the back who kept shouting to the guys on stage and singing the rest of the lines when the band was taking an artful pause. Sickening, really, but GBS handled it quite well. They did two encores, and had the audience participate in the singing of several songs (like Mary Mac). These guys just don't seem to get tired. They kept the music coming and it was amazing. I would highly recommend going to see them in concert if the option arises. They're worth the price of admission. So, then I met Lizzie and Alan Sigman (I think) and there may have been someone else. Lori was wearing her Jersey, and a thin blonde woman came up and said, "I have to ask about your shirt." Always ready to share the love, we turn to her and begin a speech when she says, "yeah, I'm friends with a couple of the guys" or something equally impressive. That was pretty weird. After the show, I got the guys from the PushStars to sign my album (the bassist was super-nice and we talked for a while and the drummer was sweet and the lead singer...well, we've been through this), and Lori drove my friends Emily, Betsy and I back to Chamounix Mansion for some much deserved sleep. So ends my Philly saga. Actually, there was a lot of other stuff (like the Mutter Museum, which is so damned cool I can hardly contain myself -- medical anomalies are ALWAYS good), but I'm gonna stick reasonably on topic. Canadian bands counts as on topic, right? Right guys?
