Always believe what Bass Player says! That's why I need to get a thumbrest for my bass[1]. But seriously, the band is actually named after a street in Toronto. Between King and the harbourfront (I think a block or two south of Wellington but I'm not completely sure) there used to be a short street named Fruvous St that got uprooted for Urban Development or the like. I guess it really was more of an alleyway, but anyways, on Fruvous Street about half a block east of Jarvis there was a diner called the Fruvous Diner. Now, the proprietor of the Fruvous Diner was one of those jovial types that you'd think should be a proprietor of a Diner, you know? Anyways, I don't remember what Mike said his name was, but it wasn't memorable at all. But after a couple months of being in business, everyone started calling HIM Fruvous. It was his diner and he was always in there and it just stuck. "Pile of flapjacks for the mister, please dear Fruvous" "The Guiness is awful thin tonight, Fruvous. Whatcha putting in it?" "Another tequila for me and my friend, Fruvous. He'll be right with us" But when the government wanted to uproot the street to make a greenway and a small park and tear down the abandoned buildings to make the city more beautiful, Fruvous didn't like it one bit. The offer they made him for his place wasn't as fair as he thought it'd be and so he tried to get some support to keep the street. He started a pretty unsuccessful campaign called Save Our Street (SOS). It was pretty short lived, but he got some press for himself and I think moved his diner to Peterborough. But Mike showed me the issue of Now, a Toronto weekly, that's the inspiration for the name. They still have a copy of the issue (I guess THE issue really) in the Fruvous archvies where it's got Fruvous (the diner owner) on the front. He's looking kinda gruff with a frowny look on his face and he's carrying a brown chicken. Over the top in big letter it said "Sending Out an S.O.S." and on the inset it said something like "Cover Story: Fighting for what he believes in takes moxy. Fruvous Street Diner owner strikes out on his own to save his business". Once the Chia Pets added Dave they needed a new name and the paper was in the right place at the right time. Just think, we could be sitting here reading about Love Bonus in alt.music.love-bonus and Chris O'Malley would be running LBDC if only the front page had been different... - Chad [1] Really inside joke for Bass Player readers there ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 22:09:42 -0500 From: Lisa Schapiro Subject: Re: Newest Fruhead CONGRATULATIONS!!! Sure! Heh. ;) As an American, I think it's a great holiday! :) However, as a former federal employee (who now works at a federal agency as a contractor), why in heaven's name do we need *another* holiday in November or December? Every pay period from mid-November to late-January already has at least one holiday in it. Give us one in in late July or early August. Something like the summer bank holiday in the UK would be nice. If we get this holiday, can we get rid of some of the more useless ones, like Columbus Day?
