Yamaha, Smart and Friendly and Plextor are rated THE best CD-R/CD-RW drives. I got the S&F CD-RW 426 (which is a Yamaha drive sold as a S&F package). Go external... I heard that CD-R drives tend to get a bit hot if they are internal units. Get a SCSI CD-R drive... too many inconsistencies about IDE and clicking audio for my tastes. I use Adpatec EZCD Creator Deluxe for burning my ROMS... audio and data capable all-in-one package... a $90 package that came bundled free with the S&F unit... very easy to use. I use Cooledit pro, CDwav, Goldwave, audiograbber, for my audio manipulation... i.e. DAE, track splitting, normalizing, etc Get a good CD-ROM drive... one capable of hi-speed/flawless DAE... plextor and panasonic are great... I have an IDE panasonic drive, and I love it! Get a decent sound card... Ensoniq (no longer available I believe) was recommended to me when I was in the market to buy, but I went for a Diamond Sonic Impact instead... no complaints. Get a large hard drive... roughly, 1 min of music in CD quality wave format = 10MB (roughly), so you could easily record a Fruvous show to your HD and eat up 1GB of space which in turn would = 2 CD's The pieces are going down on these drives... you could get a decent drive for $300-$400... even less. Me? I bought mine for $600 (bye bye tax return $$$), but that came with a SCSI card, $90 in software, and has RW capability. I really love my drive... I've recorded numerous data and audio CD's with no problems at all. I have a few Fruvous shows on CD that sound really great. I even made and Indie CD (I've always wanted a studio version of GE&H on CD). Good luck... if you have other Q's feel free to fire off an email to me... Me either. IDE's are very good, if you know what to look for. I recently got an HP8100, which is an IDE 24X read, 4X write, 2X rewrite drive, and I love it! It was right around $300 when I bought it. I have burned a whole bunch of discs...... and only gotten 3 coasters.... (they were all my fault).... The discs are as compatable as discs burned on my HHB CDR800. I would DEFINATELY recommend this drive! IDE drives are inexpensive, and good. Sure, they won't support 8X burning like SCSI does... but that's the only limitation. (As far as rewrite goes.... welll... it's not of that much use for me, so I can't comment on it. I mainly got a drive that supports rewrite for the simple reason of it being only a couple bucks more.) Oh, and you need good burning software. Try CDRWIN. GREAT program. Go to http://www.goldenhawk.com It's worth the money... it burns in DAO mode.. this program is a force of good. :) nate ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Mar 1999 20:49:16 EST From: "Leah C.
