I agree that it would be much more interesting if it were *not* all Frü- related. Yes, we've got one common interest, and that's great - but the really exciting part is discovering the other things we've got in common, and also the things that we don't. Finding out new stuff, different opinions, maybe ideas we'd never have considered otherwise, is the best way to learn. And when we get these new ideas from people we already know and like, we're more likely to be accepting of them (or at least tolerant, even when we disagree). I continually marvel at all the different points of view put forth on the newsgroup, and I'm constantly learning and stretching my mind because of what's said here. And let's face it, poem after essay after drawing after story obsessing on the wonderfulness of the same 4 people over and over (wonderful as they may be) would get deadly dull awfully fast. I'd like to think that all of us are a little more well-rounded than that, and there's lots more wonder out there to share too. k@ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 05:57:26 GMT From: nicole.twn.is@ana.ng.at.tmbg.org (Nicole the Wonder Nerd) Subject: Re: Music for Californians On Mon, 15 Mar 1999 14:32:52 -0800, someone who looked like Caitlin whispered: > >Whee! Now, um, who's gonna come up with the > MONEY for all this? > As a student who's putting himself through college as a professional bitch (although I think my official titles are usually "Administrative Coordinator" or "Treasurer") I have to say that it's pretty easy to get a literary magazine off the ground. I've done desktop publishing before for various depts. and student groups here at UMD, and the actual production of literature is the easiest part. The costs usually range from 25 - 50 cents per page (for glossy nice stuff). Any big university has at least one reprographics dept. that can do it, along with (sometimes) helpful production assistants/managers who can walk you through the process. Or, if you want to go low tech, you can always do it through any Kinkos. I'd be more then happy to lend my limited expertice to this endevor. I've found that the hardest most time consuming part of this sort of thing is usually the compilation and editing. Usually I experience a) No outside the editors submits anything and then no one wants to pay for what we produce (usually we just give the things away. OR b) Tons of people submit things and then feel bitter when their piece isn't included and then we have no idea how many copies to produce. (and cover the overhead. But, if someone produces an online version, any one of us could format it using any number of programs and produce a hard copy themselves. This is Geoffrey from over at INKBLOTS, wanting to finally put in a few notes on both INKBLOTS and the litzine arena in general... OK -- the new update (with Lisa's FruCon pics!) should go up fairly soon, if everything goes according to plan. MAYBE Friday. I meant to post the "It's Up!" message to the NG when the first batch of FruCon stuff went up, but Anna seemed to have that pretty well in hand... :) So there's that... (BTW, k@, Heather, Maige, and Mindy, I SWEAR I haven't forgotten about you -- just busy as heck here in England with End Of Term Disease...) Now, to the idea of a straightforward Fruvous litzine. I've been doing mags since I was a sophomore in high school (CRIPES, that's been, like, five years now!) and so I've got some hours logged in going the CopyMax route as well as the actual printer route, as well as the advertising and layout and, well, basically all of it. It's a lot of fun, and addictive as hell. Count me in, although my current position in Jolly Ole England makes it a little difficult to deal with snail-mail issues at this point... That said, Heather's got a lot of good points... 8.5x5.5 (half-letter size) is usually the easiest, and paper costs can be kept down by a 11x17 page folded into quarters... Yes, people should probably send originals ("POOPY" is a drastic understatement, in my experience ) *or* their own scans. As far as "professional printing" is concerned, once you pass a certain point, taking the Zip Disk to CopyMax and having them run off digital copies on a Xerox DocuTech printer is the way to go: less expensive than having to make printer plates and yet a *LOT* better quality than the after-hours-at-the-office special. :) This is also necessary for photos -- Xeroxing photos, even on the 'photo' setting, tends to be genuinely awful. This is where the DocuTech rules: each copy then is an original printout... The Big Problems we'd run into, though, are binding and shipping, and, of course, payment. Binding gets painful because, past a certain page count, staples no longer hold the thing together; past that point you have to go with spiral binding (IMHO, really yucky -- makes your work look like a cookbook), pro-level binding (saddle stitch, which is expensive as all get out), or thermal binding (AKA tape binding, which is OK but sometimes falls apart with heavy usage)... Mailing-wise, you can only get a Bulk Mailing rate past an obscene number of copies being shipped, and magazine rate requires a rather painful fee. Single issue mailings, though, start to clock in at around $2.50 for each 150-page 8.5x5.5 copy, and that was BEFORE the US postal service got all greedy and opted for the rapid-fire postage hikes. (::Geoffrey groans inwardly as he realizes another forthcoming expense for his own magazine::) Finally, payment gets wacky because of taxes, checks, cash in the mail (a rather sizable no-no) and all of that. Perhaps the best way to go is market it through FruCon and FDC, the same way as the jerseys and all of that. *OR* you can go for advertising, which is a big pain in the patoot, but means free copies if you play your cards right... Unfortunately, I'm going to be falling off the Web on Saturday until April 14 or so (big, BIG European Road Trip coming up), but I'd like to stay informed on this project. Can we get the guys at FDC or wherever to set up a second mass-mail account for this project (frulit@fruvous.com or whatever)? Cheers!
