This was jolly annoying as the only way I'd found to date to exorcise such demons was by playing the real thing very loudly for some considerably time which I obviously couldn't do. However I discovered a new method last night: write the lyrics down. As I usually can only remember part of a song, forcing myself to remember all the lyrics, including the bits I'd forgotten, was a great way to take my mind of the bits that were constantly floating about in my head. Well worked for me anyway. Anyhow, the point of this was that after I'd finished writing them down and was just getting up to go, I twigged that I could carefully fold up the lyrics and set them in the back-of-seat-in-front-tray so that the cleaners probably wouldn't notice them but the next person to sit at the seat and open the tray would have the lyrics to the Gulf War Song pop out at them. Heh heh. A rather neat way to possibly spread both Moxy Fruvous's meme to the general public and also make some weary businessman read a great set of lyrics about the futility of fighting. I thought for a long time that nothing could beat Mike on a guitar; I've modified that to reflect the importance of the venue and the audience's mood. The version of it they did at Fredonia in April of last year (19th?) wasn't just Mike and a guitar, but it was electric, the effect it had on me and the people in my vicinity (can't speak for the whole crowd.) - -v, but i'm biased Vika Zafrin, vika at ibm dot net "i'm not a mess. i'm a natural disaster." -norg ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 09:12:07 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: If Only (Re: the many configurations of one particularly sad girl) Vika Zafrin wrote: > Truth be told, I don't remember the NoHo "If Only..." The mood at > Lee's, however, was more (relatively) that of a rock concert than of a > Fruvous concert, for me, and that's what detracted from the song. In my opinion, the hard thing about If Only as a group is making it stand out against the other ballads. The lyrics are enough to stand on their own to me. So, just add something simple to make it work and highlight the lyrics is fine with me. The single acoustic does that. It also reinforces the content of the song since it is one person expressing something very personal. But add in harmonies and other instruments and you add the responsibility of using harmonious and instrument to add to the song, which isn't always easy. Most of the time, the thicker the instrumentation, the more effort to get it to work together. Sometimes it's just best to get to the point. Elvis Costello does this really well. He has some tunes that are very limited musically, but lyrically they are incredible enough to balance. But when he gets them both, it's amazing[1]. Tom Waits has some really deeply orchestrated songs, but the instrumentation works well. I really hope that if If Only You Knew makes the new album, that they work the tools they have to replace the One Guy With Guitar feel and make it stronger in other ways to make up for it. Doorstep is my example of a really great ballad that blossomed into a great full band piece. > -v, but i'm biased Just a little biased there, Vika *grin* - Chad [1] Ahem. _Spike_. But I wouldn't give up looking. As for looking in the US, well, that's probably even more of stretch than in Canada. Most of the singles are radio promos of just one song (like Down From Above, Fly, etc). A couple are released singles like MBLABOA and Stuck in the 90's. They've raffled off some MBLABOA and Stuck in the 90's singles at Frucon before. I'm just curious is all. Honestly, Ross, I'd say it's a lot of things. The way the band works, they build up by playing live shows and word of mouth. When they venture into a new place, it's an investment for later times. In new markets, they'll probably play small venues for little money just to get their foot in the door. Once they play once or twice, they start getting that word of mouth spreading and show sizes increase at large amounts. That also means merch in that area will increase as well. But with new markets, they kind of have to take care of them or else it'll fall off. If they don't play a place for awhile, when they come back it'll be like another first time. Maybe a little better. Like any job, they have to identify where they can get the most for their time and money. With much of Canada being neglected for the past couple years, that's a big market that they'd like to recapture most likely. Jack Ross said they were gonna support the new album in Canada as well as the states. They also recently ventured to the west coast and Colorado for a bit and probably need to do that at least once this year to keep that momemtum up there. It would just be too expensive to pay attention to the UK like they'd need to do what they did in the States the past two years. And that's in addition to being far away from home. I would guess what got them to the UK in the first place was money from the Bargainville days. They don't have money like that lying around anymore and they have to be conscious of what is best for them at any given time. For the past few years, they decided the US was where they needed to be. It sounds like they feel comfortable with their position in the midwest and east and want to spread back out in Canada, hoping that the Canadian music business will "get it" now. All that is my opinion, gleened from talking to people and from listening to Jack Ross answer questions at the Q&A at the con. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 11:00:28 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: Are there any tabs out there? student wrote: > > I have a band and we play cover tunes.
