One kid at a time, one stereotype at a time, > hopefully one more enlightened viewpoint at a time. It's kind of strange that I should come home from school today and find this topic being dicussed. This afternoon, in my relgion class, two girls got in a fist fight because one called the other a racist. It's really disturbing when things like that happen, especially in my school, because I thought we had a pretty good thing going. But this little incident caused a lot of discussion, and, talking to my friend Gina, I was disturbed to hear that she's overheard a lot of predjudiced remarks coming from our classmates. What really surprised me is that she said that most of the stuff being said was about Jewish people. That really freaks me out! I do go to a Catholic school, and a few of the kids probably don't know too many people who aren't Catholic, but there is no way this kind of thinking is promoted. Gina also said that, while she usually says something to the people who make predjudiced comments, she was completely stunned to hear kids from my school making fun of a school bus full of handicapped kids, and couldn't manage to say anything. That people would do that makes me absolutely want to cry! I cannot understand how anyone could do such a thing. But, Lori, you are completely right about kids learning and believing prejudiced things they hear from adults. Just last week I was babysitting for a kid who is nine, and he is a really sweet boy. He loves to play make-believe games, like pretending we are spies, or people from the x-files, etc. But on Friday, he wanted to pretend we were fighter pilots going over to Iraq. He said to me something like: "I hate the Iraqis and I want to kill all of them." This really upset me, because his dad and step-mom don't seem to me to be at all the kind of people that would instill those "values" in their child. Frankly, I had no idea what to say to him. I wanted to tell him that it's not the people who live in the country, but their leader, who is bad, but I've only babysat for him twice, and while it's important that he realize that not everything the leaders of *this* country do is right and not everything he hears is necessarily right (or event true), I wasn't sure if things like that are my place to discuss with him. I don't know. love Lizzie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 09:32:23 -0500 From: Kate Bunting Subject: Re: Fruvous Godspell > "I don't know how to loooooooooove hiiiiiiiiiim." tehehe.. i love that > song! I like the idea of FRUVOUS; unless you had a Subaru, in which case you'd want FRUBARU. You might want to consider getting a Subaru just so you could have that plate. ;) When I finally get around to buying my Beetle, I'm planning on getting a vanity plate that says BOOTIME.
