I think it's great that we notice these things now, whereas 20 years ago people might not have. The fact that we can see it is the beginning of fixing it. Often people from older generations (obviously not everyone) don't realize what's racist. I've explained a few things to my mom...though she's sick of hearing about it. Also, the thing about the oil crisis: during the recent Gulf War I remember lots of mean jokes and stuff about Iraquis but there was a lot of other talk about not blaming the people for the acts of the leaders. Also that even the soldiers might not be acting on their own consciences. I think we've come a long way. > then again, a recent joke was made on the daily show in the wake of the > death of king hussein revolving around the frequently asked question "where > is jordan?" jon stewart proceeded to put up a map of the middle east and > label various countries with things like "crazy people who hate us" and > "crazy people who pretend they hate us." i turned it off. The Daily Show irritates me for a lot of reasons, but its whole point seems to be "damn political correctness, we're going to mock whatever we want" and that bothers me the most. I don't think PC should be tying our hands behind our backs but there's something called "respect" that a lot of people seem to be missing lately. On the other hand, if people can criticize a show like that, that says something too. To look at things from a "He's Jewish and saying these things about Jewish people..." perspective is one way to see it, but to me, its also important to remember that "He's a human being saying these things about another human..." Andrew and his friends (9-10 yo) were playing "Americans against Iraqis" with their little plastic action figures the other day. (Guess who were the bad guys.) Needless to say, I was appalled to witness this "game". Needless to say, he got a bit of an international-policy lesson. But that's just one mother talking to one kid; it takes something more than that, over a long period of time, to really make an impact. They get so much prejudicial crap from news, from teachers, from the attitudes of other adults (read: unquestionably correct authority figures), and from other kids also exposed to those attitudes and even worse ones. It's not a one-shot deal; it's a systemic reworking of what we teach kids, and each other. And it's something that's going to take years and years. One kid at a time, one stereotype at a time, hopefully one more enlightened viewpoint at a time.
