It reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live sketch (pardon the Americanism), where this guy who worked in a nuclear reactor plant was retiring. His words of advice to the remaining employees were, "You can't add too much water." Then he left and the people didn't know what he meant. Either it was impossible to damage the plant by adding lots of water or that the plant would be damaged by adding lots of water. The people stood around and argued until the plant blew up from overheating and lack of water to cool it off. That type of expression is really very ambiguous. You can't think too hard about it. Hee hee. I almost wonder if the ambiguity was intentional, knowing how ornery our lads can be... A social is actually an event before the wedding, sort of a fundraiser for the event (the word social is now more generally used to refer to any similar event, usually put on by an organisation such as a student's association to raise money). But a nip is actually a burger, though it's rarely used except in Salisbury House restaurants. Actually, they rarely serve burgers at socials, so that was a bit misleading. They do serve drinks, though, especially at university socials. It sounds > like the ng... It more or less is the ng. I'm guessing the BNL people grew so fast their ng turned bad, so they started an alternate place to talk. I don't mean to discourage people from using other means of internet communication, but a mailing list, this message board, and the newsgroup all fill the same role[1]: bulliten board style communications where messages get posted up for all to read. It is nice to have one place to go for this in my opinion. My best example of a music fanbase with many different media (did I get that right, Nicole?) is They Might Be Giants. There's a mailing list, message board, and newsgroup for TMBG. I'm a mailing list person there. There are also people who do multiple ones so that when news reaches the message board first, it does eventually get to the mailing list I read, but it takes a bit. In the Fruvous net community, we have the newsgroup and a mail<-->news gateway, so the newsgroup is both our mailing list and newsgroup and people who like mailing lists can view it like that and people who like news groups can view it that way too. Then we have FDC, the best in the business place to stick information that people may want at any given time. To explain a message board, it's a web based mesage posting thing. There are a couple different topics set aside and you read and reply to posted messages kinda like you do in the newsgroup setting. The main differences are in that it's web based instead of news based and there are a couple different topics pre-set aside that you get to post your message to.
